2.2 is now available on Cap in canada

Hi all. I have trying for weeks and today I finally had time to sit and work through this thing. If you are having troubles with your upgrade phone Samsung. 1-888-751-4078. They walked me through the update. Basically this is what I had to do:
Kies: download the current version from their website Captivating Brilliance - Samsung Galaxy S Captivate? (SGH-i896) - All Phones - Mobile Phones | SAMSUNG

Once that has installed I had to to a driver recovery because it would not recognize my phone. Also on your phone go to Settings, Applications, USB settings, and change it to Kies (Firmware update).

Also - very important - if you have downloaded a differnt Launcher (I am using GoLauncher) you have to change it back to the stock launcher.

Plug your phone into the computer, make sure you have other stuff unplugged like a printer or ipod, kies may get confused (and we don't want that to happen!).

My phone then connected to Kies and it downloaded the firmware. It will then have a popup box when it is done that and follow it. It tells you to unplug your phone, take out the battery and put it back in (don't turn it on), press both volume keys at the same time, be careful not to touch the power key. While pressing both volume keys you plug the phone back in and the Android guy with the shovel comes up, it is now in download mode. You just go from there.

Again, phone Samsung if you are having troubles, I did not sit on hold for hours like I did with Rogers. They were very helpful, walked me through the whole process and now I can rest:)

ive owned Iphones,, never had the privilage of owning one that i could geta couple days charge,,

yourphone being laggy,, I would delete all apps,, and start over with basic apps,,

cxause i dont find any lag at all

as a matter of fact i find the phone more then totally useable
?
i had the phone and loved it from the start. smooth with no lag. then immediately after i update it to froyo it becomes a constant lagging pausing machine and i should go and delete every app and start over?
i dont think so. i had a well running machine...why should a supposed improvement make it go laggy? i am baffled.

happened to me too after 2.2 update ^^. but after updating to 2.2, i did manual reset, and after that no lag, and battery improved at least 2 times.

Is there a way for me to back up the apps I have on my Captivate before trying a factory hard reset? It'd be a pain in the ass to download them all again...

PS: I think 'tree choppers' might refer to Cdns liking the ganja.
The gold standard is Titanium Backup - pay for it, it will do a batch restore of your apps. My Backup Root is free, there's a pro version, I've had good luck with the paid version, can't speak to the free.

does a good backup put things back where they were too? i.e. how you have painstakingly organized things on the various screens or do you have to do all that all over again?

i would like to try what the person above you recommends to me...to try a factory restore....as i have had lag and pausing issues since upgrading...supposedly upgrading...to the newer 2.2 on my rogers phone.

thx

gonna try that. just waiting to get a reply from other poster as i want to do as little as possible to get it back to the way it looks...not just apps back but in the right places if i can.

if you backup your user settings and app data, and then use the same launcher when you restore the data, everything should be back in its place

I use LauncherPro, so I save my settings and yes, everything goes back - except for widgets. Nothing restores widgets. I wrote down a little diagram of which widget goes where, and restore from there.

One issue might be a setting that is causing these issues upon restore. It is important to not restore system settings when you're going from one ROM to another, which is what you're doing here, going from 2.1 to 2.2. Things can go wonky. Just restore apps and data.

Also make sure you're synching your contacts with Google, or at least you're keeping them on your sim card, not on the phone. I've not had good luck with any backup program restoring phone-stored contacts. I know they say they'll restore, but they seem to be intertwined with the system settings for the phone, and I won't restore them.

thank you for info. so launcher pro is not just for rooted phones? i could use it for my move to froyo?
I sync my contacts with kies. would that not be good enough vs with google?

Absolutely you can use LauncherPro on unrooted phones, and yes, you can use it on Froyo, it's my favorite launcher. As for synching contacts, if Kies keeps a copy of them for you on your computer then I'm sure that's a good backup - I don't use Kies so I can't speak to it. I've just settled on keeping contacts in Google, it makes my life easier :)

I restore my phone contacts just fine with LauncherPro. You need to make sure you reboot after restoring though. They don't appear until after a reboot.
