2.2 is now available on Cap in canada

Yeah, thats the same version of Kies that I am using right now. 2.0 (or whatever..) didn't work at all...

On this computer I am using Windows XP SP2. When I am home I will try on my Windows Vista, 64bit machine. Unfortunately both computers I have at home are Vista 64bit.

EDIT: The error I get is "No Response from server."
This error pops up immediately as I start the upgrade, after it prompts me to backup my contacts.

That is weird. The only difference is that I have XP SP3 and I made sure that I installed .NET Framework 4 (someone had posted somewhere else in this forum that it made a big difference).

i finally decided to do a factory reset after upgrading to 2.2 because 2.2 made my phone worst in terms of battery life. it would tell me to charge at 5 pm, which little use cause when im at work, we're not allowed to use phones. i did the factory reset yesterday and it more than doubled my battery life. with a full day's use with a phone call done on speaker, and some minor surfing, came home at 10 pm, and still had 66%. which is remarkable

I noticed the same results... When I first installed Froyo, battery life was great, then it was TERRIBLE... So I did a restart of my phone since it wasn't connecting to WiFi and now my battery life is amazing!

What are the chances that this update brick's your phone like the 2.2 updates did for the other Galaxy S phones back in December?

Well, looks like I won't have the Froyo update for some time since whatever Kies version I download I can't get it to recognize my device. So until I have enough time to go and read all of the troubleshooting guides, which I have read one with no success, I won't have it. Such a shame that some people like myself have to go through BS like this.

i think all u need is just to uninstall ur version of kies, and download the version available on the samsung website

Yeah, I have done that several times. I started initially with the 2.0 version, then got the 1.5.3, then uninstalled and installed 1.5.3 again, then 2.0. No luck.

not too sure then, perhaps changing the usb port ur using to a different one, when plugged choose kies firmware update as 1 of the 3 options on ur phone when usb is plugged

I have tried all of those things as well. I have seen some troubleshooting options that take a bit more effort, but I have a feeling I could be spending hours figuring it out.

I will third that.
I used to see how long friends iphones lasted and was jealous...often getting a couple days usage....while i only got on average one full day.
but since we all charge at home anyhow it was no biggy.

then a few days ago i did the rogers update to 2.2 and was barely using my phone as much as i normally did ...probably less..and during my first day of usage at 2 in the afternoon, i saw the color of the battery indicator was yellow.
i thought :eek::eek::eek::confused::confused::confused:
then within an hr it warned of low battery and imminent shut down.
i am still at 2.2 as i have had it only a few days but the battery usage is insane. i dont know why so bad?

re the actual smoothness of use and lag...it is laggy and jerky and hesitates often..where it didnt before.
do i like google voice i am learning? yes. ultra cool. do i like a few of the various mods it came with..that i am just discovering day by day as different? yes.
but if the phone is worse re jerky lag than it was before and often hesitates when i choose to open something...then when thinking it has not been hit properly i hit it again..only to feel tactile feedback that it actually heard me the first time...its just that it is taking its sweet time...well that is unacceptable.
poor battery life on top....i dont get it....this is an improvement overall? how. being non technically minded i got caught up in the when does froyo come? enthusiasm...even though i didnt actually have a clue what it would do for me...well know i know its not good.:(

had to edit to add at least a postive note of improvement...a huge improvement...gps. mine would take quite a while to locate me and now...if it doesnt find me within 4 seconds..it is 20 seconds at max...and it works effortlessly giving me navigation. this is something i really needed and did not accept that i should expect it. why do so many android and so many iphones work?
when some argue u should not expect a phone to be a gps..why? who fed that crap? if other smart phones do it...and this phone company said (samsung) gps is a feature..why expect it not to work?
well that is non issue now as for me it is fantastic. not quite the instant smooth perfect workability of an iphone..but just a step behind and close enough that i dont care.

ive owned Iphones,, never had the privilage of owning one that i could geta couple days charge,,

yourphone being laggy,, I would delete all apps,, and start over with basic apps,,

cxause i dont find any lag at all

as a matter of fact i find the phone more then totally useable

When I first got my captivate I couldnt get my pc to recongize it or mini kies to work! I called samsung and the rep asked me if I had the usb plugged up in the front usb ports on my pc! Which I did he told me to plug it in the back because it was closer to the motherboard and got more power! So I did and it worked if I plug it in the front it wont recognize my phone but it does in the back its weird!

I have the ATT captivate and was getting terrible battery life, maybe 4-5 hours from 100% charge after light use. The other day I backed up all my stuff and did a factory restore. Now i'm going pretty much all day without a charge. I'll get home from work in the evening and have about 25% left whereas before the restore my battery would be dead by lunch.

Might work for you.

everything is fine now except my phone's internal memory. theres clearly well over 11 Gb left, and it tells me folders of music i am trying to transfer is too large, when the fodler is only around 50 mb. anyone else having this problem?

actually its only when i choose mass storage i have that problem. if i choose media player its fine after plugging the usb in

I couldn't get the phone to update at all using my main XP computer but my netbook was painless.

However I have two things bugging me that I can't figure out. When I put the phone in the dock, in the morning the app refuses to close and the main page icons stay in horizontal mode. If I hit the home key the alarm app restarts. I have to restart the phone to get it back to normal...

Does everyone main screen and application app rotate when you turn the phone? Mine refuses to do it then will go horizontal but not verticle when docked so I know it can do it. I have tried a factory reset but it didn't help...

i was finally able to get kies to recognize my phone... when i went through the firmware update, i rec'd a message that my phone wasn't eligible for update - i d/l the Canadian version mentioned above.

Has any of our Canadian neighbor tried to sync with Outlook using older version of Kies after updated to 2.2?

Damn after i did the froyo update, I get this problem too. But other than that, everything is silky smooth now. I don't notice any lags, battery life is better and the stock music player sounds better now for me at least. It would usually crack and pop and the video player is better now too. The videos didn't sync with the audio. It's all great now though but the camera still takes crappy pictures. :( Anyone know a good settings for the camera? Dunno what the camera firmwire upgrade did but I have that installed. There was no difference.

KIES SUCKS!

After several attempts of, unistalling, reinstalling KIES and uninstalling and reinstalling USB drivers I gave up and hooked up with Rogers rep ONLINE service.... after 1.5hours of them, unistalling and reinstalling I lost connection with the rep. BS!

I decided to take my phone to work and install it there. I installed KIES 1.5.3 and it recognized my phone and gave me the update 2.2. Then... ERROR messages cryptoerror message... This happend a bunch of times. FINALLY! got it installed... is that the end? NOPE! My swype function wasn't working properly and after talking to a rep at Rogers they got me to do a factory reset. This is the 2nd time I had to do it...

FINALLY! after putting in 4hours altogther I finally got it installed... But, what happend to the dimmer function!? You know the one where you swype your finger across the top of the screen to lower or brighten the display? Is it gone or is it just me?

If your having problems with your computer recognizing your phone, take it to another PC and try it there. Seemed to work for me.

Also, the battery life is REALLY GOOD! to bad I had to put in all the time though... BOO!

Did you check the settings on your camera? maybe your settings are put to MACRO mode. Try looking into the functions on the camera to find the area... I think it's in the PEREFERENCES > FOCUS MODE > and see what the setting is at. Just a suggestion. Also, there is a firmware upgrade with 2.2 so that might help too. Try going to the SAMSUNG APP function on your phone see if it comes up.

Hope this helps.

After talking to Samsung they said to wait for the 2.2. Too many bugs and they will be coming out with an update in a week or two. He did say when you plug your phone into the computer you have to unplug other things that are plugged into the USB outlets (printers, ipods), that is why is doesn't recognize your phone.

This may be the case.
However, I read somewhere that if you have installed the 2.0 version of Kies, that you need to uninstall and even download some other utilities to delete all the other files the uninstall doesn't delete. I tried this, still with no success.
So, I used my parents laptop, which never had Kies installed on it. I downloaded the 1.5.3 version that was recommended, and there it was, recognized my device in about 5 seconds. But, when my parents laptop recognized my Captivate, none of the USB ports were being used... while on my laptop I have a wireless mouse because my laptop trackpad stopped working. So, they may be on to something.

this window keeps on coming up after i try to upload froyo on to my pc. what am i supposed to do with it?

Wait a minute, you "tree choppers" get health-care and froyo...

Thats it I'm trading in my dollars for Canadian Pesos & moving up north...
3.gif

Expect to get less 'pesos' as our dollar (er...peso) is worth more :p

I tried to do the update last night and received and error message. I was instructed to go into firmware recovery mode (unplug, take out the battery, put battery back in, hold down the rocker buttons....no dice...nothing happened....and it might have been take battery out, then unplug...can't remember now but I followed the instructions)

I have also had poor battery life from the get-go and I got my Captivate on day 2 of their release in Canada (was in a store at the right time...they got 3 and within 1 minute they were all gone) so I have a sneaking suspicion that I may have gotten a dud from a bad batch - battery issue + inability to do a firmware recovery suggest there is something wonky with my software, non?

Anyway, they were going to send me a new (refurbished one) but they're out of stock. Frack me!

Is there a way for me to back up the apps I have on my Captivate before trying a factory hard reset? It'd be a pain in the ass to download them all again...

PS: I think 'tree choppers' might refer to Cdns liking the ganja.
