2.2 Update - HTC Confirms Major Problems

odd things are happening in mine. I went down to 10% after doing *288, but I've run slacker for an hour today, and it still isn't dead. I think 2.2 is having a problem properly reading battery levels.

Glad to see this thread so I don't have to try to read thru +6,900 replies to find info on this topic.

I upgraded to 2.2 early this week and immediately noticed my battery (1300) was toast quick, my phone was HOT sitting in my pocket doing nothing. Found that task killers don't do squat with 2.2 so uninstalled it. I fully charge my Incredible at night and at work at 8AM with moderate use I'd be at 50% or so by the time I left around 5:30PM. Not anymore.

Today is a prime example as my phone was fully charged this morning, got to work at 8AM. Haven't do anything with my phone except put it on vibrate so it wouldn't ring. Nothing else, and I mean nothing. Now 3 hours later I looked at my phone and my battery is around 50%. 3 hours with NO USE AT ALL.

thats what most everyones problem is with battery life is there battery gets hot. i have the batter widget and i try not to let it get over 100 - 105 degrees once you start getting it hot the battery life gets cut in half. had it happen to my eris, and iv kept mine on my incredible cool and it last me all day.

this is just what i have noticed it happened to my eris, my sister in laws eris, and it seems thats whats happen to you.

This has to do with Wi-Fi doesn't it. I noticed everyone who connects to the internet frequently through Wi-Fi is experiencing MAJOR power drain.

You can check this yourself in the battery usage screen in your phone UI.

It seems they boosted the Wi-Fi range enormously! but in return our phones are sucking the batt big time.

HTC.... please just put the wi-fi programing where it was before.

Temp Fix: Just use 3G. I haven't fully tested my hypothesis on this issue but it can be confirmed by this forum.

Are you using wifi? If so hows your battery life?

I would need to see a source link confirming HTC recognizes the issue. Sometimes, it's easier to 'hose and close' a call to satiate the customer rather than doing any real fact-finding.

My own informal observations:

I'm friends with four guys at work that also have Incredibles.

Before the update, we all kept a USB cable handy, or bummed off of one another, LOL. Typically, after a 5-20 minute commute into work, we were all around 90-92 percent battery life out of the gate.

After my initial pull of RSS feeds and reading through them, I'd be down to about 85%. Feed and facebook updates along with same occasional game playing would leave me at 50% or so by lunch. Keep in mind, this is without receiving e-mail (I have a BlackBerry that I use for my e-mail and instant messages).

My peers experiences were similar. We all use our phones in different ways, but the commonality is we use them frequently throughout the day. So by midday, we'd all be looking for a USB cable and empty workstation to charge.

After the update, it's been mixed results.

Not using my phone any differently, for the most part, my battery life seems to have improved. Actually, since the update, I've used it more since I have noticed the improvements. After my initial RSS pull and reading in the morning, I'm somewhere around 90% still. By time I get to lunch, where I was once at around 50%, I usually am sitting somewhere around 75% now. I'll update my feeds, read through Facebook, and play a game or two during lunch and return to my desk around 65%. By the end of the day, where I was once at 30% or lower, I'll be sitting at about 50%.

One of my friends has said he hasn't noticed any battery life change since doing the update. Particularly surprising because he abhors widgets and pretty much just surfs the web and checks his messages (text and e-mail). Another friend has said his battery life seems to have gone down, and he uses an extended battery.

So, I don't know. Results seem to be hit or miss. I've been especially mindful of battery life since that was one of the advertised benefits of the update and feel that it has served me well. It could be something with the devices, it could be software related, I just don't know.

I noticed the battery drain also when I updated to 2.2 so I rooted and completely deleted the useless apps that came preinstalled with the software. There is a tutorial on how to do it somewhere. I then installed KiNgxKernels BFS#2 and I can now go 10 hours after a full charge and only be at 75% battery life.

Here are 2 things that I do to keep my phone charged up in the car while running nav. Even on 2.1 I couldn't keep a charge if mounted on the dashboard or windshield because the phone got so hot.

1. mount your phone in front of an a/c vent to keep it cool - a cool battery will charge better.
2. turn off the screen unless you really need to look at the map, and just use the voice directions.

ATK sucks! It flat out never worked properly for me. I could try to kill an app with ATK and other task killers will show that app is still running.

I also have noticed battery life is shorter and it takes longer to charge.

But I have also noticed the phone is so much faster and smoother. I also seem to get more bars now. Probably more a software thing than an actual performance thing.

Verizon/HTC should allow us to add or remove any apps we went, including the f'ing useless sponsor apps like Amazon MP3, Skype, etc.

Wuh ohes.

I'm using a stock verizon phone and I get a day out of it. Day meaning like 12 hours or more. It does seem like it since after the 2.2 i'm loosing a little battery (like maybe i could have used it a few more hours), but i havent been bump charging like i used to. But i did today so i'll report back I guess.

[my phone usage entails 5 mins of phone talk, text all day, internet and crossword app usage]

Came across this thread and it has me concerned. I've never paid any attention to my battery usage before, so I decided to do a little experiment on mine. The reason I haven't paid attention to my battery usage is because I charge my phone every night (turned off), and even have it plugged in at work because I use it to listen to Internet radio or use SlingBox to watch my Yankees play. So, yesterday I completely charged up my phone (with it off) and turned it on at 3pm. It has been on ever since. I have hardly used it at all. Checked email a few times. Web surfing a few times. Ran a couple apps for a short period of time. Not much else though. So I checked my battery charge at 3pm today and I still have 32% left. Not bad for a 24 hour period, I thought.

So if there was a major flaw with 2.2 I would expect my battery to be much lower. I updated to 2.2 using the official update.zip method (manually, not OTA). I did NOT do a factory reset, because my phone seems to work just fine. Love this phone by the way!

I have been around these forums for a while now and people with battery issues always show up. THe problem with diagnosing these issues is I have no idea what you have on your phone in terms of apps and configuration.

Some apps have not been optimized for Froyo(2.2) and thus cause problems. Then the user thinks well I upgraded the OS and nothing else so it must be that when in actuality it is an app causing the problem

Apps are always the cause of battery issues. If you had a defective phone or battery you would have noticed it out of the box...first day in use.

You paid apps will show back up on your phone once you do a factory reset because they are tied to your GMail account so don't worry about them. As for your custom settings you need to follow this key press mEnu->Settings->Privacy->and uncheck Back up my data. Then power down your phone and and turn it back on then follow those steps except press factory data reset. Once that is done pull the battery out while the phone is on.

You can then start complaining about battery life once you see it on your stock phone. Many of these app developers aren't the brightest in the box and cut corners to get an app to the market. You need to be very selective as to what apps you do install because I would be that 70% of them are coded wrong and 50% aren't optimized for Froyo(2.2).

The HTC rep was more than likely telling you what he told you because they get that call a few times a day and they know that most people(like you) aren't willing to factory data reset their phones so all they can do is try and get you off the phone. This problem has been around from the time the computer was built. It happens with your OS-X/Windows machine but in terms of slowing it down not draining the battery. Once you load programs on that weren't optimized for say Windows your computer takes a speed hit because of shotty developing. I could go on but I think you get the point.

The only known difference with Froyo concerning the battery is that it charges much slower that Eclair(2.1).

.....I use it to listen to Internet radio or use SlingBox to watch my Yankees play......
Put ARod on the D/L again please!! Lost 2 in a row since he's back after winning 8 straight. HR or not, give him the hook for now.

I saw many of the same issues w/2.2...heat, big batt drain, etc. I had initially uninstalled ATK as it seemed that all apps just immediately reopened after being closed. I decided to reinstall ATK and set it to "crazy" auto kill and "when screen off" autokill frequency. I don't manually kill apps anymore, I just let ATK do it's thing through the settings. This seems to have at least gotten me back to normal on battery life, and hopefully will get me through until the HTC "patch" arrives. Seriously...it disappoints the hell out of me that HTC didn't factor battery life issues into the 2.2 update seeing as this is the main complaint its customers have had about the phone.

Also, please don't come at me with the "task killers are useless" replies. I'm not advocating them, I just know ATK works for me. Good luck all...

I don't think HTC felt there was a battery life issue to begin with. Seems like what battery performance we get from the Incredible (or lack thereof) is what what we get whether we like it or not.

BTW, I've had "Advance Task Manager" on my Incredible since a couple days after ownership. I don't have a problem with it. In fact I bought the paid version so I might as well use it.

With 2.1, i watched 2 movies, one after another with no problem as long as i connected to the charger......with 2.2, i can't even go half way into the first movie because the battery is way too hot

Whoever said the wifi is the problem might be right. I just checked my battery usage and here is what I got:

32% cell standby
30% wifi
31% phone idle
5% android system
2% display

That was after waking up with it next to my bed not plugged in.

Well, I got the update a week ago..

For the first couple of days, I noticed that charging took longer, but battery life seemed close to before the update.

I just spent the weekend in Canada where I put it in airplane mode, except when I had the wifi turned on to use internet. This is when the battery life started getting shorter.

After a full charge, no wifi use, and airplane mode for half the day, I got back into the US and turned airplane mode off, along with the BT, wifi and data. Got home and the phone died overnight from dead battery.

I now get about 14 hours on a full charge with hardly any use, where I used to get 30+ hours with the same conditions.

Add me to the list, I'll be callin VZW today. (after I recharge my phone from dead again!!)

I didn't exactly have a problem with my battery after the upgrade, but I did get a "loading" screen periodically. I did a Factory Reset like the other recommendations and it hasn't helped anything, even a little.

I did get the 1750 battery a month before my upgrade, so that may be why I don't have a battery issue too.

Is anyone's else having last.fm issues? It randomly skips tracks for me now and never has before the update. Supposedly this can happen if you don't have a good enough data connection, so I'm wondering if I'm getting a poorer signal with froyo installed. I have noticed my 3g bars look about 1less in the places I frequent, but I don't know if I'm imagining things, and the internet seems to perform the same.

I'm running the stock battery and wanted to test over the plast weekend and see how much I could get out of it...

Up Time: 62 hours
Awake Time: 5.5 hours

This is basically no widgets, email checking every 2 hours, twitter and facebook updating every hour... Had some phone time, screen on auto brightness, shifting between 3G while out and Wi Fi while at home. Do not have the %'ages though...

Although right after I downloaded the OTA Froyo, the Android System was taking about 80% of the resources... Now, Android System takes less than 15%.

Factory reset reduced lag time on many apps, internet, etc.....but did NOT help battery life. Hardly the "end of thread".

Actually, short term a factory reset will appear to harm battery life. Its as if you are putting a fresh battery into a fresh phone.

Many people have reported shorter battery life the first couple of charging cycles after a factory reset and then it went back to normal or improved.

Give it time.

in case anyone is having the same issue. i just recieved a response from the bug report i sent in about this:

last.fm developer said:
This is a bug with the new media player framework in latest version of Android (Froyo). We're currently working with Google to resolve this issue.

The problem some people are having is this:

If you installed Froyo from the downloaded update.zip file, Verizon may still be trying to push it OTA to you. Your phone will refuse to install it, and it will end up getting downloaded over and over. This will drain your battery down.

A factory reset 'fixes' this because Verizon stops sending the OTA update to you. To figure out if this is what is causing your poor battery life, check your download stats. If you are downloading hundreds of MB per day, you are probably having this problem.
