4.4.2 update

I hear what the mods are saying...

However...IMO, and this is just me saying how I feel. Nexus owners should all get the updates within a 3 day period. If Apple can roll out updates to a zillion phones in one day, surely Google can roll out updates to the amount of Nexus devices that are floating around.

And honestly because of the newness of the Nexus 5 and the horrid camera experience that is present on 4.4, I think every single Nexus 5 owner should have gotten 4.4.2 already.

But again this is just my point of view. And for those that say its impossible for Google to do this...Think real hard about how many Nexus devices you have actually seen in the wild... The numbers aren't mind blowing, Google could do this if they really wanted to IMO.

I'm sure its possible for them to do from a technological standpoint. However, there's a very good reason they don't do it that way.

If for whatever reason, the update is buggy, if they it put to 1% of devices they only have a few angry customers and a few devices to fix.

Now take apples approach. They have their users all update on day 1. They now have multi-millions of users running the update (assuming there's no download bandwith issues, this isn't always the case). If the softwares buggy, they now have millions of people contacting customer service.

Look at iOS maps. It was terrible. It went to everyone. They can't pull the update once everyone gets it

At some level 4.4.1 was buggy. Google stopped the OTA when the few people got it and patched the bugs with 4.4.2. You don't get an update to 4.4.1 anymore, you go straight from 4.4 to 4.4.2

That's the way the systems designed to work, and its working flawlessly. Now isn't always better. Why want a buggy update?

If you want to take issue with googles QC that's one thing, but the OTA process is designed to protect the user.

While it might be physically possible, it's also happened more often than people realize that Google pushes out a bad update and tried to fix it by putting out another one quickly before really ruining a lot of people's devices. We saw this in action with 4.4.1. It's better that only 1% of devices have the bad update instead of 90+%. ;)

Just look at how many people took the iOS7 or iOS6 update last year with how buggy it was and not be able to downgrade back down. It created a PR nightmare for Apple in the tech world, but Google won't have to worry about this in the Android world doing this procedure. Also, if you look at the 4.3 update for the GS4 & GS3 that Samsung pushed out that was a mess. Because of the slow rollout, it helped keep the number of complaints down.

Even still, iOS 7 has tons of bugs. A few people that I know are very unhappy with it for a multitude of reasons. One of the primary being that you are forced to take the update. Apple is NOT the gold standard for how updates should roll out. Quite frankly, you have the power to flash the update yourself if you do not desire waiting. Take advantage of the options you have.

I'm not saying Apple is the Gold Standard. However they are the Kings of rolling out fairly good updates for the most part in a timely fashion...Day one is when everyone gets it. However I'm not looking to use an Apple vs Google thing here...I'm on the Android side of things when I'm on these forums.

Google should really start using Dates a week or two in advance ...Like Dec 20th come get your Kit Kat...etc...

They have enough people and developers in house to test out new OS platform updates in beta form before releasing to the public...

Buts in all honesty ...it is what it is...

Haaaaaaaaaaa,i was about to complain that my camera was still as slow as it was before the 4.4.2 update last night, but i decided to power off/on my handset before commenting.Good job i did as it is now almost instant in focusing and shooting.

The update is here now so why not just shut up about it and if anyone isn't happy with their handset.SEND IT BACK AND BUY SOMETHING ELSE.

People with Nexus 4 have received this update, I got nothing on the Nexus 5. This is a huge scam. I'm done

It is not a scam. Have you even read any of the last few posts?

If you buy a Nexus device, you expect to be among the first to have the new software. You will still be among the first to have the new software, as will Nexus 4 owners.

Which handset you going to change to ?.
Whichever it is,it won't get the update any earlier than ya current device lol.
As i've mentioned before,my wifes SGS3 is up to date on 4.1.2.

On a different note,i read somewhere the new update has pulled gallery and photo's together.
I disabled photo's so just have gallery. If this is correct will i be missing anything ?.

Also i now have a different symbol in the top left of the screen on any new photo's ive taken.Am i right in thinking this sends the photo to google somewhere ?.If so,where and if i'm wrong, what does it do with the photo.

Unfortunately still waiting for any update.

How do they phase these rollouts, by IMEI number or MAC address? It's not carrier/service provider based, is it?

I disagree with you. The way OTA's are set up now are perfectly fine. Do not fix what isn't broken. Great phrase to live by.

IMEI aka device ID. Nope, these updates come from Google directly (unless you've purchased a carrier branded one, I'd assume).

I am running on 4.4.2 and no they are still separate apps. It is most likely sending it to G+ as a backup. Don't worry as they are not automatically posted though, just sitting in an area that is ready to be shared immediately.

I have a strange problem after my 4.4.2 update. I have downloaded all my apps from the Play Store but when I looked at my apps on the phone, I did not see Swift Key. Went to the Play Store and it said it was installed. I clicked open and went through the changes needed and the key board is indeed working.
It still does not appear when I open apps. When I go to the settings and open download apps, Swift Key does not appear. IT does appear when I look at "all" apps.
Strange indeed...................

On another note, I was unable to run the upgrade because I changed my framework with the "Xposed" app (sound increase). This has been changed with the upgrade :) Used a toolkit to go back to 100% stock, and took the upgrade.

BTW..........can understand Seans statements but if you need an example of a messed up upgrade, just look to 4.3 on the Samsung S3. You definitely do not want all those bugs. Have patience grasshopper..............you will have your 4.4.2 very soon.

Most everything I have tested works very well now but I want to go back to using Xposed and Gravity Box. Awesome programs.......... :):)

Also remember if you really can not wait for the upgrade to be pushed to the phone you can usually download the OTA and upgrade your phone by side loading it.

After wasting a lot of time to update the phone, the camera isn't that great, the sphere mode crashes the camera and you need to reboot and the LED notification light is not working anymore. I was waiting for this update for nothing, it made things worse.

Sounds like a faulty phone. Try factory reset and if not try RMA.

But they are no longer in the gallery app

You seem to be the only person along that line of thought, I'd be wondering if the phone needs a factory reset or is indeed faulty.

No, that is not it. Since it worked well on 4.4 (besides the camera), the phone, or the hardware itself has no problems. It's the software. 4.4.2 is full of bugs.

I can only speak for myself and say that everything on my phone is working without problem.
I would look at the fact that your phone is faulty or the update didn't install properly somehow - therefore try a reset or get a replacement.

Of course the camera not being great is a matter of opinion.

I see you were down on the N5 anyway with your "I'm done" comment. Maybe this phone isn't for you?

The only 3 Things I really see wrong with the phone is...And this even after the update to 4.4.2

Battery stinks- I've had it since Monday and I'm going to just say this phone is pretty crappy when were talking battery life, but then again so are a lot of phones out there. Only phones really doing well in the Battery dept are the G2, Droid Maxx, Moto X and the note 3.

Audio- Jesus Xmas, can't anyone get this right, any phone made in 2013 should have good audio, that goes for speakers, sound during playback from Video, etc. And for those saying the nexus is a bargain phone what do you expect? Just stop it, I'm not looking for Bose, or Boston Acoustics here, just decent sound. The internet is littered with people complaining about this issue, last year it was the camera, this year its the camera shutter speed and the speakers and audio...Just my opinion, those that are happy...I applaud you!

Focusing when shooting Video- It stinks on the nexus 5, and if you tap you take a picture...lol. Hey I'm not asking for the world here, just some simple things that some very low budget and midrange phones do very well...

Other then that, honestly....I like the nexus, I've liked them all, but I really like the feel of this one, granted I'm now a little bit more liking the Black version since the white has those Glossy sides and if I could do it over probably would have went stealth black with the all black bumper case, but that's a whole other topic...

Carry on Forum friends...its all android, so we're all on the same team here, just different points of view

New photos? That's just not true, I still use Gallery primarily and on 4.4.2 photos and videos are there in the "Camera" folder along with the G+ "Auto Backup" folder

Take a photo, open it up in the camera app, click on the coloured icon in the top left, then what happens

Coming from the N4, I'm astounded by the battery life. For similar typical use, I'm getting almost twice the battery life. Twice I've forgotten to charge it overnight and survived the next day without restrictive battery-saving measures. In fact, I don't use any extraordinary battery saving measures ever. I use Google Now, location services, auto backup, etc, always on. And it's nice to see screen-on time over a few hours without the low battery indication, even with a larger, brighter screen than the N4.

I don't use my phone as an entertainment device. Maybe battery life would seem horrid if I played more games or watched movies on it. And I don't know what more to expect from the speaker for the same reason. It produces clear, audible sound. It does lean to the low end of the spectrum, probably to cater to people wanting more "bass" from a tiny thing. I just don't care to knock the phone because it doesn't have Bose or Beats branded speakers, I don't expect a hand-sized computer to produce great sound.

Sorry if that got off topic

Battery life is definitely inconsistent. Some days I can get 5 hours of screen, others only 2. Right now I'm on 28 hours off the charger with 1.5 hours of screen at 25% brightness and have 44 percent left. Rxpert managed to pull off a 7 hours of screen at one point.

The audio might be a defect, so I'll comment more after you receive your replacement and it is on 4.4.2+.

I'll agree that Google's stock camera software is atrocious. If there's one area that needs to be fixed, it's this. Kodak is floundering, and it makes me wonder why Google doesn't try working with them to improve their software. It would seem like a win-win to me.

That's the photo app icon you are tapping. Of course it is going to take you to photos. :)

If you open gallery, your photos are there too.

If you click the 3 button menu icon after you take the picture while still in the camera app, and tap edit, it will offer you a choice of photos or gallery (and any other editor you have).

Nexus devices get the updates first.

Updates roll out over a 1-2 week period by random lottery by your device ID

If you have a nexus 5 you're in a lottery with all the other nexus 5s for the update. At the same time the nexus 4 and nexus 7s have their own separate lottery for each device. It starts out that roughly 1% of devices get it the first day, and it ramps up to 100% over the following week. This is to ensure the safety of the update.

The update comes out at the same time for every nexus. If you haven't gotten it yet your device ID hasn't been chosen in the lottery

If a Nexus device is within the 18 month window that Google promises updates for, then it doesn't favor one device over another unless and issue is device specific due to hardware. If you're on a device that gets the update, the over their air update is passed out randomly. However there are two officially supported ways of installing it manually. You can sideload the ota file through the stock recovery, or flash the factory image through the bootloader. It doesn't take longer than 5 minutes to do either and can even be automated through toolkits if you're really nervous or lazy.

I understand what you guys are saying 100%, I've already read all about how OTAs work and how to sideload, etc. I do not have a computer that I can use to sideload, and I am not using the force method, so I am stuck waiting for OTA. I agree with Google and their reasoning for the way they do OTAs, but my gripe isn't that others are getting it before me. My complaint is that Nexus 4s and Nexus 7s are getting it before ANY Nexus 5.

So please know that I understand how their doing it, I just don't agree with it.

However...IMO, and this is just me saying how I feel. Nexus owners should all get the updates within a 3 day period.

And honestly because of the newness of the Nexus 5 and the horrid camera experience that is present on 4.4, I think every single Nexus 5 owner should have gotten 4.4.2 already.

But again this is just my point of view.

I totally agree with what this guy is saying. It is my opinions that, especially since Google has acknowledged the issues with the Nexus 5 and it is their newest flagship that was flawed at launch, we should be the first a foremost in the line of 4.4.1 or 4.4.2. You can still do random 1%, 25% and 50% updates, but ONLY to Nexus 5 owners. I mean really, a few Nexus 4 owners already got 4.4.1 the first day, and now they already have 4.4.2 as well, while my Nexus 5 hasn't even seen 4.4.1 and it's been a few days into 4.4.2 already. (and yes, I know that I will skip 4.4.1 and go straight to 4.4.2) With a 1% chance and the same Nexus 4 gets BOTH updates before my Nexus 5... very odd.

It just shows us how important the Nexus 5 really is to Google and how they don't care to let us keep that "Ooo, I'm one of the few who have this shiny new thing" for more than the first couple launch weeks. They could put Nexus 4 and 7 on the back burner like the rest of the manufacturers are doing with their older flagships and release that at a later time when they've already cleared the bugs. In my mind if I released the latest and greatest I'd want to keep it that way in my consumers minds for some time. Some days I regret getting the Nexus 5 when for the same price I could have snagged the Moto X this past week.

I really am very happy with the phone itself, it's just Google is disappointing me on it's delivery of this wonderful, yet under-appreciated device. Maybe it's time to go back to custom ROMs and forget about the Google BS.
