720p Video experiments... let's see yours

Why do I think Froyo would help?
You might know your cameras, but either you are biased, or you don't understand the OS....

I've been monitoring the root/froyo developments. I've been monitoring all the attempts over at xda-developers on the EVO and Nexus One specifically as it concerns to 720p recording.

The reason why Froyo won't help boils down to one simple answer: codec and drivers.

Someone has to pay for the licenses to Qualcomm & Omnivision. Someone has to pay the codec fees. Neither of which is free nor cheap. There are dozens of threads on this in the EVO forum. It boils down to HTC ponying up the money to make use of the wonderful hardware they have.

Froyo can be 10x faster but if it is still using a software render, it will taxing the Snapdragon cpu. It needs drivers to unlock the GPU for framerates. It needs a better codec for better video and audio.

You may have been monitoring it, but you never took note that the camera in the N1 is different, and the Evo, nor the DI has Froyo camera drivers yet.

Moving on...

kool vids but can you guys please help out other people like me who dont know much about cameras and give us your settings. that way we can all kinda work together through process of elimination and apply the best settings for our phones so that we get the best picture/video quality.

kthxbye:D

Sure, but you're not gonna like the answer:
1) iPhone 4/Nokia
2) Droid X
3) Galaxy S

No comment on the iphone 4 or Galaxy S, but the Droid X is a truly terrible video camera. the video comparisons over at Gizmodo illustrated this quite vividly -- the Droid X looks like a 10 year old webcam compared to the Dinc (or any given phone), and sounds like one too.

For video:

Select MP4 (instead of h.263. I don't think you can even select h.263 in 720p)

For metering, I set to spot if there are extreme or varying light sources. Otherwise in a well lit room, I do average metering. THEORETICALLY, with spot, you can tap your area where you want to set your exposure.

I set white balance to auto. The presets don't work for me.

Lastly, invest in a tripod or steadycam set-up. I use this:

I did the update and like I knew it would be, its exactly like the Evo 720p..BAD! Say what you will about the iPhone 4..I had one just to play with...wouldn't dream of activating it on wonderful AT&T but the video is great compared to everything else. I haven't played with the Droid X but from the looks of the videos on Youtube its not much better.

There is no denying Apple's philosophy of multimedia and video first, phone second. Myself I rather go with everyone else's philosophy of this is a phone first. I don't drop calls nor am I required to change my phone holding habits for the sake of cell signal. So they can be happy with their uber video recording and shoddy phone features. Me I will take my meh video and....hang on gotta take this call.

Why does everything have to be a battle with Apple? They have good points and so do we...we were just talking about video quality in this thread I thought.

The Incredible, like the EVO: Shoots using 3gp MPEG4, 24fps which I've seen drop to 9fps in low-light. Exposure gets all crazy and can't handle sudden shifts in light or motion. Audio sounds like a tin-can, 8-9khz AMR vs 44khz on the other phones. Nothing in the world is gonna change this unless someone writes awesome software to fix it.

Incredible/EVO will never shoot video like these:

YouTube - Carny - iPhone 4 HD Test music video
YouTube - First OFFICIAL iPhone 4 Music Video - for FLAKJAKT "Cascades"
YouTube - APPLE OF MY EYE - an iPhone 4 movie / film

Watch, someone is gonna reply about the antenna/death grip because they can't accept the fact other phones will shoot better video and take better picts.

When the EVO Incredible shoots 30fps/H.264, it will be just as good as the others. Don't get me wrong, I welcome the addition. It is good to have a camera on your phone. Who knows, you can be recording a cop kill someone on a transit train. Best cam is the cam you have on you

Must be something wrong with my Father in law's Moto Droid X because the video quality on his SUCKS BAD compared to the Samsung or Droid Incredible...
Hmmm....

ok, so the 1280x720 records at 23 FPS. Then you have 800x480 (15FPS) and 640x480 (about 19FPS). Does this make sense to anyone? I really hope that when the update is official they can at least make all of the modes 30 FPS or at least a consistant 24 with better audio (unless that is just hardware related).

I have h.263 as an option to record in 720p

I am trying to make a high quality video similar to these iPhone demos that can show off the capabilities of the Dinc. However, I am missing some kind of video editing app for android. Does this exist? I'd really like to do this because I KNOW that the Dinc is capable of producing this quality of video. If anyone can or wants to help me out with this project please let me know. I really want to do this so any help would be amazing.

Why don't you just edit on a pc/mac/linux. It doesn't have to be on the phone. iMovie on the iPhone is pretty awesome but it is very limited too.

I was able to drop some files into Final Cut Pro.

You know there is something that should be said about those examples. Not only was it obviously a pro that did it ;) but none of them are heavy action, and therefore do not actually show the fps that the iphone4 is producing. Does anyone have any fast paced shots that would be a good example?

Yes, I could easily import the video files into Final Cut but I want to eliminate every chance for people to say that it only looks good because I used Final Cut. Plus, a great looking video done completely on a phone speaks volumes about its capabilities.
