Root A couple of a2sd questions

1. Do I want to move all my apps to the SD card? Or are there some that you want to leave on the phone? I set up a 1GB partition which should be plenty as I only have about 50 apps but I will probably be getting more.

2. When I move the apps to the SD using the built in menu>settings>applications>manage applications>on SD card>move to SD card...this is moving everything, right? It should not be moving just part of the program like apps2sd, right? I'm using the latest mikG ROM (2.61).

3. Just to confirm, when I do a nandroid I need to select sd-ext, correct?

4. If I do wipe before switching ROMs, do I need to clear out the apps on the partition or do I leave them there? Will Ti backup pro take care of all the apps on the SD card?

5. How can I tell how much of the partition I'm using. The bottom of the screen of the "On SD Card" menu shows the main partition (23GB used, 5.7GB free) not the 1GB apps partition.

I found the answer to #5 in Ti Backup Pro. It shows the SD card storage and SD card (a2sd) partition size.

By the way, I was just reading the Ti Backup Wiki and it has a wealth of information which can help many new rooters like myself. Not only info about the program itself but it has many explanations about how things work behind the scenes on these phone which have answered some nagging questions in the back of my mind. In my opinion, a link should be added on some of those sticky rooting guides to read that Wiki. If it's already there, I didn't see.

Yes this will save space in internal

NO. That does not move everything.

Yes

You should wipe before installing a new ROM. New ROM will need to be set up like you will have it on old ROM

Regarding #2...then how do I move the entire program to the partition? I thought I read that the mikG ROM had a2sd built in and that the method I described above would move the entire program to the partition on the SD card.

You are correct MikG does and it will automatically do it for you. You need to do nothing.

The Move to SDCARD in the App Man does not actually move the whole app. a2sd does and leaves a symlink No need to use the Move in App Man

I think we are talking in circles. If the "Move to SD card" in the app manager is not the way to move the apps to the SD card completely, then how do I do it?

You say "a2sd does and leaves a symlink". How does a2sd do it? It is a separate app? Is it in another menu? You also said that "MikG does and it will automatically do it for you. You need to do nothing." It didn't do it automatically for me. And I'm sure I need to do something to move the apps.

Sorry...although I appreciate you trying to help...you are not being clear.

Sorry about not being clear I guess I have assumed you read up on a2sd and how to use it.

You will need to do nothing MikG activates a2sd on its own. However a2sd is an independent app. Read about it here

Also read the MikG info for using it. Mikg will do everything that needs to be done for you as far as a2sd is concerned.

Thanks for your patience. I read the a2sd guide in the "Rooting for Dummies" guide sticky but I guess it's a little too general. I didn't realize I have to install the darktremor apps2sd program. Here is the mikG tutorial about apps2SD.

I don't believe you do. with a2sd built in, it should move what apps it can move, by itself. It isn't going to move all of them or necessarily all of those it does move. It will do what it can.

The most you should have to do is run the commands here in the sticky.

"4.getAndroid Terminal Emulator from the market
5.type in the command su and enter. the superuser app will then give permission.
6.then type a2sd reinstall. this will move your apps to the ext 3 of the card.
7.the phone will then reboot
8.type su again and enter
9.type a2sd cachesd. this will move the dalvik cache to the ext3 on the card.
10.the phone will reboot again.

now that you are partitioned, I would wipe really well, making sure you wipe the partition as well, flash the Mik rom to it, and then use tb pro to restore your apps.

Look at the bottom line down there on tb before and after and see what activity the partition has, then run those commands and see what it looks like afterwards.

One way or another, it will move what it can. When you look at APPS in settings, it won't show that they are moved, but tb will show you have more room in internal memory area and the partition will be getting fuller.

the apps aren't very big so you won't see much unless you dl and install something like angry birds game and you will see something then.

Not sure if the rom does it by itself or if you have to use the commands, but only some of the newer roms still need dt installed. Don't think this one does.
 
Im using mikg2.61 and i thought the rom does this with no user interaction. My understanding was that the rom moves everything that can be moved on 1st boot and from the market but I could be wrong.

yes you are correct. it will do it all on its own. you have to read the op. if it is built in then is should automatically do it for you. if the op says that it supports a2sd then you need to flash darktremors and then use terminal emulator to command tha apps to the card.

Thanks OCN I thought that was right but the old brain dont retain things like it use to.:D
