Root a little help needed please.

Sorry to have to bother anyone but can anybody help me please. I am unsure what to install next. I started last weekend to root my phone. I have hit loads of problems but have managed to get round them with the help of the forums and searches. My position, at the moment.

htc desire gsm model a8181. Unlocked at a stall, (I have seen how I could have done it myself) was on orange, but still has branding. 18 months old, came with froyo 2.1, ota update to 2.2.

fully rooted, (superuser installed and terminal emulator symbol changing to a #) took hours, eventually managed it with superoneclick, s-off. SD card has goldcard on it. Spent hours and hours with evoked and Revolutionary methods but simply could not get them to work.

Tried the recovery option last night, had screen with phone and triangle over it. Pushed various buttons, seemed to be locked up, and then did infact go to some recovery option. Had to exit, owing to work, and then tried again this morning. Could not get it to load recovery and, eventually, phone vibrated 3 times and went blank apart from green led light. Had to take battery out then it booted up normally. Only thing I had done was to download titanium backup, from market, which I uninstalled but has made no difference. Nothing showing as backup on SD card when mounted on pc as disk drive. Is it just because I have made no backup yet or should I get some sort of screen when entering recovery from h-boot.

Want to install clockworkmod recovery. Have read in forums its better to install 2.1----- on it rather than the present one.
1st problem.
Threads suggest using rom manager but other threads say it has bugs and causes other problems. Only way I have found wont let me download it, reason unknown. Could anybody point me to the best and easiest way to get it please.

2nd problem.

I understand the reason for a backup. Problem is I want rid of the branding. Was going to install an official ruu first, to clear the branding, and backup from that. I have realized this would probably fail as it is an earlier version than what I have installed at the moment. Have been to shipped roms, but unsure what to pick. Have also read that this would lose my root !. Changing the radio worries me with my limited experience. err...none. Could anyone please advise me how to tackle this?

I would like to end up with cyanogen 7 or 2.3 gingerbread but would go with anything that was recommended to gain some experience, and knowledge, of the process.

I would also like the Google side of things to function if possible.
At present I only have a 4 gig SD card. I never really had this anywhere near full. do i have to partition this or would that do for now as I can go through the process again when I learn I bit more?

The reason I am needing help is that my partner is complaining of the time I have spent trying to accomplish this, having spent all week, after work, to achieve what really is very little. We only have one pc and it is causing some conflict, to say the least! I have being going to throw in the towel every night but the time spent would then wasted.
I have read loads of threads, including the noobs guide, but find they may not relate to my phone, have had a ridiculous amount of windows open in the end become even more confused. What may seem to be straight forward can be confusing to a novice. It also becomes quite concerning reading of peoples lock-ups, bricks ete, as I can not afford a new phone, and would like to avoid this by getting the process correct. (also would help to get back on her better side. lol.)
My thanks to anyone who can help in any way, even if it

you have to root with either unrevoked or revolutionary. i know you have problems but we need to know how to over come those
you cannot use super one click as its temp root and will not hard flash a recovery
i would create a goldcard using our guides and flash a more up to date RUU
if not you can flash the dev 2.3.3 debranded RUU (you dont need a gold card) then use revolutionary to s-off with extended commands and flash the Super user zip file or flash a custom rom

Edit: Rasta has said it much more succinctly! If you start by rooting "the standard way" then it's much simpler to support. Removing this post so that you aren't tempted to try to patch it together.

But since you seem unclear on backups: Ti Backup backs up apps and data, not the ROM. You need to run it to make a backup. If you want to back up call logs and messages, SMS Backup+ is good (Ti isn't so good for these).

An RUU will wipe the phone, so back up whatever is important before running this.

Ahh thanks from your replies, and sorry for the delay. ( her turn on pc.)

so, do you mean that superoneclick is not suitable as a rooting method, I thought it was as I picked it up from other threads. I have backed up anything I need and have already performed a factory reset and reformatted the SD card before I started.

Are you saying for me to start again until I am successful with the revolutionary method?

if so, could I put another ruu on first so as when i do re-root i have a ruu that i want as a backup and have debranded. That would be my first aim achieved.
thanks.

Were those other threads specific about what phones superoneclick was being used on? The XDA thread for superoneclick says half way down its first post that it only gives a partial root to GSM Desires, but more complete root for some other handsets.

Overall I'd say that doing it with unrevoked or revolutionary would be better - they'll do a more complete job, and lots of people here have experience with them. Do you remember what your problems with those tools were? Someone might be able to advise if so.

As for debranding, the 2.3 update is an RUU you can use and still return the phone under warranty if needed (otherwise they will expect Orange branded firmware, and there is no RUU for Orange Froyo). However, it will also mean that unrevoked will not work and your only option is revolutionary. Since you have a goldcard you could use an unbranded Froyo RUU (WWE = World Wide English) which could then be rooted with either unrevoked or revolutionary. Your choice really. If the problem was with your phone's software, running one of these might make rooting easier (if it's on your PC that's a different matter).

further to my last post i was looking at the htc website to update the ruu. seems from info on the forum that if i do that i can not root with that update in place.

it seems, at the minute, to be a dead end whichever way i turn.

sorry , it seems i posted before i seem your reply.
from your reply;

Since you have a goldcard you could use an unbranded Froyo RUU (WWE = World Wide English) which could then be rooted with either unrevoked or revolutionary.

this is what i would like to do. if you could assist me with this it would be of great help. the main problem with revoked was the famous cid error, spent hours trying.

could you please suggest a ruu i could use,

as you can probably tell i am not used to actully writing on these forums so i apologise if i am not as i should be.
once again thanks for your responce.

You can root the 2.3 update, you just need to use revolutionary. Check the guides and faqs in the "all about rooting" sticky post in this forum. The trouble with web searches is that some of the information that they turn up is out of date (e.g. HTC 2.3 being unrootable).

For an unbranded Froyo, the RUU RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe from Shipped ROMs should do the trick. If your goldcard is working you should be able to run that - if it fails with a cid error that means your goldcard isn't working.

As for cid errors using unrevoked, there is a section on that in the rooting faq on this forum (see start of this post). Did you try that? Note that I'm sure that solution would not be available if you flash the 2.3 RUU.

you need to read our guides. its all there
If you are getting cid errors you will probably need to use goldcard and flash a more up to date RUU. if that still fails use teppics downgrader to downgrade this to a 2.1 rom, root, flash radio then flash rom

its all in our guides. read them thoroughly. they are extremely accurate and up to date
probably the most accurate and up to date on the net for the desire and i aint joking either

Thanks once again,

I tried every thing I found. It changed from cid error to firmware too new, which is also mentioned quite a lot.

So, if I do replace my ruu as you say, do you mean I will be unrooted and not able to root again using revolutionary?

I will crack it eventually, but i`am just thinking the branding will be gone and a stock system to start with, for recovery purposes. I am not bothered about warranty as the phone is now 18 months old.

if its 2.3.3 you will be able to use revolutionary but not unrevoked.
however read our guides please they will help you understand better
they are in the stickies of this very forum
im not saying this to be lazy, weve put lots of work into them and they will answer most of your questions

first of all can i say i am very impressed with your site. i have spent hours reading your guides, perhaps too much info to take in before you build up expierence.

I have just relised, last weekend my goldcard may not have being correct. The site was down and I used a rather long winded method. Made a new one today, tool and site ok which only took minutes. (Last week spent ages on it) could I just try unrevoked again with goldcard in? Would it just overwrite any files already present? My head is buzzing with all this, feels like i`am so close yet so far.

unfortunately goldcard doesnt affect the status of the cid error even though its related
the cid error refers to unrevoked not being able to read the misc partition of the device which holds the real CID info.
basically gold card can be used for flashing a different unbranded RUU (that is a higher version than yours) or downgrading to 2.1 (using teppics downgrader) as long as you are currently on froyo

sometimes the only way to root a device that gets CID errors is to downgrade to 2.1, root then flash custom rooted rom and a new radio

I know the feeling with the wife.

Sig is the signature. The automatic post at the end of some peoples posts. We usually put useful links in them.

My recommendations are as follows:

Start again. You've read far too many different things and confused everyone.

You're in 2.2 android I think. First check what Hboot you have (switch off, boot into hboot by vol down + power and look at the info there. )

If your hboot is less than 0.93 follow SURoots guide to rooting using unrevoked. If 0.93 or higher, follow my guide using Revolutionary. They are both in this forum section.

hi matt,
my h boot is 0.93.0001. i am going to try Revolutionary but need password to get clockwork files. i have been all over Rastaman-FB sig but still cant find it.

have found what i was looking for. seems to be out of date, ie not working. even the later one mentioned. have i missed it as went down p3 as well. have to go to bed, going out early with the missus. will get back onto the rev method asap. hope it works as this is bugging me now. many thanks for your help lads and sorry for being a knob, opps noob. will check back later for any further help cheers.

Password (and username) are near the bottom of page 2 of the "Useful downloads for root users" thread (linked in several of our signatures) in post #99. I just tested it and it works. Make sure you type the password correctly.

as i stated originally you have to click "show" to show the password
i mention this as some people were typing "show" as the password
