Root A N00b trying to get Rooted

Just my pennies worth - you need the goldcard in the phone if you use Chrome to Phone from the Chrome browser. I only know that from experience, so I think it is best to have a large sdcard as a gold card as it will stop you having to swap them around.
 
I have just got home, I downloaded the file again from my dad's PC and I have got the same error message which suggests to me that either my PC doesn't like it or the file has some how got corrupted.

I have never used the Internet app that is on the phone as its quite slow, Opera compresses websites up to 90% (in case anyone wanted to know).

I have managed to download the file using the phones Internet browser but am still getting the same error message. I have also tried it on an old laptop but unable to select the run as option, maybe because it is windows 2000?

I will try to run the programme on my dad's PC over the weekend. If I get the same message then the file must be corrupt surely?

Are you sure? I'm using Chrome to Phone and my Goldcard is lying somewhere else.
However, I would probably make my main SD card also as a goldcard.
 
I use chrome to phone. Its hit and miss but I dont even remember which card is my gold card. Its not the one in the phone though.
 
Well maybe I am wrong, but I remember when I rooted I used a smaller sdcard as my goldcard and Chrome to Phone worked okay. When I bought a bigger card and used it Chrome to Phone didn't work and I researched on the net and came across a piece on a forum that said you needed to have the goldcard in the phone for Chrome to Phone to work. So I had to make the larger sdcard a goldcard and it worked okay. I can't remember why you have to have the goldcard in for Chrome to Phone to work. I think it was to do with identifying your phone. I will try and hunt it out again.

EDIT: This is the only thing I can find http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/172893-gold-card-question.html but not sure if it explains it all. But if yours works without the sdcard not to worry.
 
thats odd as with or without a goldcard the phone will still be indentified via the cid
with goldcard its just 111111 but without it will be manufacturer cid as it was when it was stock so it should still work
my current card is not a goldcard as i partitioned it and killed the gold card cid and chrome to phone still works

on reveres android to cloud also works (chrome to phone but the other way around)
 
Well, it seems I am mistaken. Sorry if I have caused unnecessary confusion. I know it worked for me when I initially couldn't get Chrome to Phone to work but I guess it could have been coincidental or something else.
 
Right, I NOW HAVE A GOLDCARD!

Sorry for the caps, but it was a complete kurfuffle to do! Each step was a nightmare and it took me hours to do (remember I said I lack time to do it!).

First of all, Goldcard tool still doesn't work on my PC. God knows why, same error message. Managed to get it working on my dad's PC. This then meant that I had to install the HTC sync software on my dad's PC. What a nightmare, took me ages.

Got passed that then kept getting CID fail on both settings. After much kurfuffle, I deleted the files on the SD card (I had changed it to FAT32 and formatted it on my PC, it must have loaded the files on there when I inserted the SD card into the phone) and got it to work.

Next, I couldn't get the website to send me my e-mail! It just would not do it. I even donated to see if that helped (I was getting desperate!) and tried browsing though their fourms. In the end, I used the default internet on my phone and type in the code and it went through first time! Instant e-mail, ka-ching!

After that, easy as pie and a message that said you have created a goldcard.

So, phase I complete, time for phase II which is rooting my phone. I have read the guide but my phone isn't an Aura version? Do I do anything different?

Please can someone tell me what I now need to do to root (even if it is copied and pasted). Also, before I start rooting, do I need to save all my SMS and phone contacts (just checking). And what about programs (I have a 500 allowance per month), can I save those to save internet data allowance? Whilst I'm on the subject, every time I flash a new ROM, will I lose all my apps that I've downloaded and have to re-download?

You just need to follow "my" guide and ensure you follow the instructions including ascertaining your PVT version and if PVT4, your erase size.
 
Just trying to start rooting, up to this part

  1. Expand "Other Devices" in the right-hand pain and locate "Android 1.0 device"
  2. Right click on Android 1.0 and click Update Driver Software
My other devices just has USB Device with a yellow question mark next to it. That is the only device listed in that section. When I connected to PC it "found new device" but I don't think it found the drivers for it?

What do I do?
 
If you're in Hboot, just do the 2 steps listed above. The guide is literally step by step. Follow it to the letter.
 
Even though it doesn't say Android 1.0 device but USB Device instead? Just wanted to make sure it would all still work and that it doens't matter that it doesn't say Android 1.0 device.
 
The name shouldn't matter. As long as when you unplug it, it disappears (proving its your Hboot) you should be able to add teh drivers. Though I have never seen it not called that
 
Have installed the bootloader. Started up unrEVOked and it started doing stuff automaticly (once I clicked OK on pop up menu). Didn't know what was going on but just left it all to run its course. Seems now I have ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.7.

Is this what I want or do I still need to install the Amon-RA file? Is my phone now rooted properly?
 
you should have chosen amonra2.0.1 before you connected the device and its only relevant if your device is pvt4 erasesize 40000
this is all fully documented in the guide

  • Browse to your Amon-RA file (recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.1.img) and press "Open"

The above instructions didn't actually say when to connect the phone (or maybe it's just me), so anyway, I kind of connected the phone before selecting the Amon-RA file, opps.

Does this mean I need to select the file and then connect and then this will install the correct file?

My device is pvt4 erasesize 40000
 
The line above what you pasted said the following must be done before you connect....

Now you must redo the process correctly.

Once.done clear data on super user via manage applications.
 
It says "failed to flash recovery image" on unrevoked when finished.

Where do I " Once.done clear data on super user via manage applications."? On the PC or on the phone? I can't find it? (sorry for being thick)
 
No worries. On phone, menu, settings, applications, manage applications, super user, clear data.

Try unrevoked again. If it fails again you can either RUU back to stock which wipes everything or do s-off and follow the fast boot faq from the sticky thread to flash recovery
 
Cleared data but still failed :-(

What method do you recommend? I have backed up what I think I need so can wipe phone if required.

I will have to try again tomorrow now anyway as need the phone operating tonight but would like to know what to do so I can get on and do it. Could you post links to the thread you are talking about as there are so many sticky threads I am getting lost in a maze of them! lol

Thanks for your help, I know I am being special and I do relise that it did say before you connect, however, there is no mention on WHEN to connect (maybe in your eyes as you are writing it and have done it before, if you get what I mean?).

You connect at the point when you are ready to let the phone go through the rooting process. I'll edit that to be clearer ;)

I think RUU is safest. You did download one?

You just connect your desire to USB and run the .exe from the PC. It tells you what to do.

There is only 1 sticky thread in this forum :confused:

Clearing data on superuser doesnt help flash recovery. Its just something you must do if you root a rooted device as it breaks superuser.

If you RUU you will take back to stock then retry the whole process. Youll get there evntually :)
 
I haven't downloaded one, no. I made a Goldcard or is that something different? Where can I get this from? My phone information is in the first thread.

There maybe one sticky but it leads to other stickys and the titles aren't maybe what I am looking for. Maybe if you had a sticky title and a sub note of what's covered in that section?

I knew that I would have this sort of thing happen to me, hence why I created this thread! lol

I have noticed if I now go back to superuser that I can no longer force stop or clear data, just thought I'd mention that. I take it I won't need to clear data again?

I am getting the hang of parts of this, I have to say that unrevoked is a nice looking programme, I am impressed.

Half way there eh? lol
 
The adb and fastboot FAQ was the one you were looking for, but if you're RUU-ing now it doesnt matter.

All RUU's are in shipped ROMS. If you look in the rooting FAQ also in the sticky, there is a link to it. I know you said you dont really have much time for learning, but this is one subject not to be taken lightly.

Read the FAQ a few times through before you go any further because you do seem to be lacking some of the crucial steps and knowledge needed to go on. I'm not saying that in a bad way but the more you understand, the easier you can recover from mistakes and the more you will know about what you are doing. Its all in teh name of the safety of your phone.
 
Agreed. I have read the FAQ but it does indeed seem that I have either forgotten stuff or getting confused with other things, you know, two plus two equals five! lol

I will read it again later if I get a chance.
