A New DX Update...for those who still care!

You're already 2 updates behind...if it has not promted you to to update to .605 then my guess is you wont even be notified of the .621 update until you allow the .602 update to install

I just got the typical alert of "Install update" (I receive this every 12 hours). It is the update to 4.5.602. I suspect I will have to do this first, as you suggested "already 2 updates behind", in order to potentially get the .621 update/invitation. After doing the .602 I'll probably have to wait (days or weeks?) for the .605 update and then wait (days or weeks?) to get .621.

Since the Dx is already at its end of life I'd really like to get the .621 since this will probably be the last update for the Dx. Am I correct that .605 was to work out bugs in .602? I've had my Dx for 10 months and have not experienced any "trouble" after getting Gingerbread 2.3.3 last June or July. A few things: (1) What did 602 do or fix (2) What did .605 fix in .602? I believe there were "keyboard issues" in one of these and then a "radio update" (3) What does .621 offer?

Since .621 is like 5-6 months after .605 is this Motorola's last effort to support the Dx? Or is this Verizon sneaking in to limit what can/cannot be done to the Dx (root, rom's, etc). I'd hate to fix what ain't broke & get these updates, providing I can get all three of them, and then discover problems due to one of the updates. Would I be able to cancel/revert back to .596 if or when any trouble happens? Would I need to root to do this or is this where a Factory Reset would do that? I am NOT rooted at this time, I'm waiting till 1 yr warranty expires in 2-3 months before doing root. Thanks
 
You'd have to root and create a backup in recovery to revert back to .596.

I suspect if you have issues, a factory reset should fix them.

I'd wait until .621 comes out, then do them all and factory reset after the last one.
 
Can I please ask those who took the new download to state whether or not you were rooted at the time and if you lost root or not? And if you were rooted, what have you changed on the phone and did you un-do anything prior to updating?

I have not unrooted or defrosted any apps and don't want to jack up the phone.

Same as my question. I am going to go out on a limb and say you can propably stay rooted and still take the update, but you need to put back any removed bloatware and unfreeze any apps. Whether or not you keep root after the install is a gamble, but before I try it, I want to know if Psouza4's 1 Click Root method works afterwards. I also hear that you're supposed to remove any backup apps, but I am not dumping Titanium Backup to get this, but I'm willing to uninstall it temporarily, however.
 
as long as you didnt freeze blurupdater then you can be rooted and take the ota, 9times out of 10 you will lose root.

however see if you can sbf back to .605, and then take the OTA, then see if you can root the ota with petes tools
 
I bit the bullet and unfroze everything. Took the update without issues and lost root. :( I can't try to re-root until I get home tonight, but I have heard we did NOT lose the ability to root with this update. I doubted that anyway, since the more current Moto phones are still rootable.

EDIT/UPDATE: Someone turned me on to a market app called Voodoo RootKeeper that will allow you to back up your root files, unroot (or hide the fact that you are rooted), take the OTA and then reroot without all the fuss. Too late for me, but a heads-up for the rest of you ;)
 
Defrosted, ran ota rootkeeper, installed update, ran ota rootkeeer, re froze.

Perfect. I have the update and root.

Happy to finally have the camera issue fixed.

Dammit!! I rooted before I even knew about Rootkeeper and all the methods I can find won't re-root because there are remnants of SU and BusyBox still on the phone from prior root attempts that don't play nice. I tried to get rid of them using the methods described, but I can't get it to work. Arrrrghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:mad:

I think this may be a security update, foremost. Still, I'm impressed by this update. I had figured .605 was the last update the X would see, so I applaud Moto (and Verizon?) for pushing another one, especially since it claims to fix a lot of the bugs we had complained about for a long time. Yes, we would've liked these bugs to have been fixed a while ago, but better late than never.

I've read some of your posts on nook color is that process do able with out a home computer? I ask this because we had a power outage and now my computer won't come back on I have no idea
 
Looking forward to this update just for the camera settings fix, about effing time they took care of that!
