Root A Tech Idiot Trying to Root for the First Time

Ok, so my initial reason for wanting to root my evo 4g was to usb tether for an internet connection. I downloaded EasyTether Lite to my phone and laptop with no problems until 2 days ago when I could no longer access HTTPS websites like Twitter and Gmail. So I tried to download an old BETA version of EasyTether from a link found in another forum and all it did was download a DOWNLOAD MANAGER. Then I started reading up on what it would take to root my phone. And now I am totally lost.

How do I backup my phones contacts and data onto either laptop or SD card (if possible)?

Can I root my phone without needing an additional internet connection? (i.e. wifi access or other)

I have already downloaded the HTC drivers for windows 7. Is there any other drivers I need to install?

I just want to be able to access the entire internet without having to pay an additional 30-50 dollars a month to Sprint for hotspot or wifi privileges. If there is another way that I dont know about to do this, please let me know and speak in a way that you would explain it to a 5th grader. I am not especially fluent in tech language. Therefore, speak slow and use small words. Thank you and any help will be greatly appreciated!

I just went through this whole process. I think what will save you a ton of time is figuring out which ROM you want to run. If it's something that runs sense I suggest MikG 3.0. I used it for a bit, liked it, but I don't use sense so I was over it.

If you don't use sense you should go with CM7, which has a lot of other things that need to be done with it. But since your main concern seems to be tethering (I had to buy Easy Tether Pro) I'd say just go with MikG. It's easier, has Sense.

ok, finally got revolutionary to run but no matter how i insert the beta key it says its invalid. i have done the copy and paste thing. am i using the wrong serial number? now what?
 
If the drivers are causing an issue go to device manager and remove the phone drivers. reboot system hook phone back up and see if it installs the drivers if not go back to device manager click the action menu and select scan for changes it should then reinstall the drivers for the phone

so take a deep breadth and relax we will get you rooted.

so make sure to:
1.download this driver: http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe
2.install the driver on your computer
3.make sure that you do not have something like double twist or pdanet or anything like that on your computer.
4.like i said that htc sync is not installed on your computer
5.usb debugging is turned on.

also what computer are you using?

you can also try and delete revolutionary and re-download it and try again.

got the driver installed and everything is working except for the beta key. no matter what i do it says its invalid. i did the copy and paste thing too.

try using notepad++. copy the beta key then paste it into notepad++ then copy it from there and paste it into the command window.
 
also it took me over 10 times doing the stupid beta key before it finally worked. not sure why it did finally worked but it did.....so maybe try mizzou's suggestion then if that does not help then walk away and take a break then try again.

also maybe try on another computer.

And you installed the driver on the revolutionary website too? It should be installed on your PC so it knows how to communicate with your phone. You need the revolutionary program, the driver and the super user zip file.

ive downloaded everything. the driver, the program and the super user zip file.
 
I think there was one case where one guy had to delete or uninstall revolutionary and reinstall it to get it to work...

Myself, I uninstalled easytether before I tried it. I heard you can't get the file anymore though, is that true?

i have uninstalled and reinstalled revolutionary at least 3 times in the almost 12 hours ive been trying to root my evo. i dont know anything about the easytether file. I got it from android market. if i uninstall easytether i will have no way to download revolutionary as it is my only way to connect to the internet.

So you are trying to root while tethered Im not sure but i think you need an internet conection besides the phone. But im not 100% sure on that.
I do know at one point when i rerooted it took like 20 tries to get the key to take.

i have seriously been at this for almost 12 hours now. im about ready to give up on rooting my phone i did refresh the revolutionary website and it gave me a new beta key but it still didnt work.
 
Sorry for your stress over there.

Is there a chance you could try it on a different pc maybe tomorrow when you have had some rest?

found out what the issues are:
1.)i was keying in the wrong S/N into the revolutionary website because im an idiot and wasnt paying attention to what i was doing
2.)clockword.mod has to have an independent internet connection to run which i didnt know at the beginning of all of this and if i did i wouldnt have run myself ****ing crazy for the last 12 hours.

So my sincerest apologies and deepest gratitude to all of you that have tried to help me through my ordeal today. I really do appreciate all of y'alls hard work and tips. Maybe tomorrow I can start from where I left off today and find a WiFi that i can hook up to tomorrow.

on a side note i would recommend amon ra as a recovery vs clockwork mod. go to the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. it has a switching recovery guide. just follow directions there to get you amon ra, after you are rotted.
