Root About flashing PRLs through CWM

Not sure that's possible. Just updating the prl will not make your phone roam on other carriers towers. Roaming is disabled at radio level.

Even using qpst to enable roaming your phone will see and connect to the towers but you won't get service as your phone won't authorize on their network because vm doesn't support roaming thus it doesn't have roaming agreements with other carriers that would allow you on their network.

Some people tried this on the optimus v and it would connect to roaming towers but nothing worked.

good point on the VM roaming support...hadnt occurred to me. then again i was a little distracted by the "app circus" haha. Even so, implications of an app like this would affect more devices than just this one - part of the reason i was following the thread lol. As a side note: VM uses sprints network , so the advantage of changing prl's in the first place would be to increase reception (in some cases) within the same network (sprints) as opposed to using another carriers towers which was the endgame of a project ive been messing with

[for the people goofing around and all that - two thumbs down]

I'm laughing thanks to the app circus, but also because changing your PRL has been entirely possible (and I did it a few weeks ago).

See this.

However, also see this:
I've never seen any improvement in signal with a prl change. Technically the prl or Phone Roaming List is supposed to contain a list of partner towers for roaming purposes. Since vm phones don't roam changing the prl wouldn't do anything. This is probably why vm doesn't release prl updates.

Now I could be wrong with all this but this is what I've read and changing prl's has never helped me

So, I more or less ended up doing it for Science. Beyond that, it isn't helpful, but it's been possible.

Okay, I'll stop joking. Here is how I see the situation-

>On side #1, we have giantpune. When he first said that he thought he could get into DIAG mode without MSL, he was right. When he said he thought there was a way to root over terminal without flashing the phone, he was right. And when he thought he could make an .apk to root the phone using a different method than his previous root, he was right. When he said he thought he could get our phone to run CWM, he was right(something than many developers[including well known devs such as jcase and Drew] had been working on for weeks, mulitple phones had been bricked, and it was pretty much at a stand still). On top of that, he did the CWM without bricking a single phone. In this particular situation, he says it could be done, he logged the traffic and showed HOW it gets done, he even gave you the file names for where it gets done, but sifting through 40,000 items just to prove you wrong would be rather frivolous.

>On side #2, we have those who say it can not be done, simply because they have not seen it be done.

I for one, believe it can be done. After all, if you have a Verizon smartphone, all you do is punch in *228 on the dialer, press call, and it will automatically update the prl. From this we can see that it is entire possible to update a smart phones prl without a computer, and it can be done while the phone is in use. Maybe it is not our phone that does it at this point in time, but if a developer who has done a great amount to unlock this phone and has a 100% success rate with whatever he does, says that this phone has the potential to update it's list of metal towers without needing a computer to hold it's hand, I would be inclined to believe them.

*end of monologue*

@ darkone : really another wise guy?

@ hashtag : I get it; the omnipotent giant pune is a clever guy and did some great dev work on some projects for this device. Thats pretty badass and im sure everyone apreciates the work, there are alot of dudes out there who spend hours/weeks/months or longer and the android world is better for it as a whole.

so he read the usb logs, big deal. that does nothing to prove/disprove either side of the discussion. neither does the fact that there are dialer codes to update prl's. now we have people posting up pics of nonsense which further distracts from the core of the debate here.

im not here to create arguments or be dramatic but on one hand you have pune/all of his hype-men saying something is possible - and then EVERYONE else who may have messed with qpst or any of the other TYPICAL ways of making those changes saying no, thats not gonna work.

Pull up any of the dozens of guides out there about flashing prl's - what do they say to use? a friggin computer and some software. Why might that be? because no one but pune can do this? or maybe its because it will not work. i cant say for sure which but you have yet to convince me

Exactly what im talking about - of course its possible to change prl's. thats not what is up for debate here. some here believe that an app can be created to change prl's without the use of external programs such as qpst, radiocomm, and the like.

I also think it may be possible. On my Sprint work phone I can go into settings and there is an update prl option. I click it, it downloads new prl, flashes it, the radio resets.. as indicated by signal bars going to X for a second then signal returning. I check about phone and I have new prl.

If it's possible on Sprint phone then why not Vm. If anyone has the Sprint version of the Elite I bet there is an update prl option in settings.

yeah , there is an "update prl" setting in the phones however: It's built and provided by your carrier and not meant for flashing custom prl's or ones that your carrier wouldnt designate for your use. ---> it just updates OTA for some providers or there are codes from the dialer to manually check for updates but thats it.

There is an app in the store.. Lg Esteem Optimizer which has a prl updater built in.... it supports the esteem and m+ with the m+ being very close to the Elite.

The functionality is there, it'll just take someone to figure it out

Wasn't clear on what you were looking for. Simply claiming it isn't possible to change a PRL leaves it open for a very wide range of potential answers. It does work if you have a computer.

Additionally, there is no reason it shouldn't be possible given a.) the versatility and module nature of Android/*NIX itself, and b.) it should be entirely possible to tear down the function on those phones that allows for a PRL update, and modify and repack it so that it works with this phone as well. It was claimed that cancer couldn't be cured, and that was true until cures for some cancers started to come out a la science.

It's not impossible - nothing is impossible. It simply requires time, science, a little human ingenuity and elbow grease. It's not available not because it cannot be, but simply because it hasn't been done yet.

But it will - you can count on that.

that is a cool find! I bought the app and contacted the dev. I'll dissect it and plug into an emulator and report back with the results at some point this evening.

[edit: at first glance the "update prl list" appears to have the same functionality as the update prl through dialer method]

going back through the thread and reading the nonsense almost makes me not wanna share what i found :D ;) :o

I would simply ask that you share it for the sake of information, if for no other reason than some outsider that's curious, if not for us here. Either way it could prove useful.

Then don't

this guy again... werent you one of the ones propagating that circus previously?

"No, i can confirm that Hashtag's app works, and i am currently using Cingular Wireless's towers on my VM phone and it works great! Thanks for taking the time to do this!"

nice. what a constructive way to contribute to the forum. I dont even have this device - the time i spent was merely for curiosities sake.
