Root Abysmal Wireless Tether Speeds. Help?

I got an Evo yesterday, and successfully rooted it. One of the first apps I added was the Wireless Tether app, but I've encountered a problem. It only gets around 10 kb/s. In addition, the ping is about 1500. I'm tethering off a 3g network with full bars, and my brother, who has the same rooted phone in the same house, gets about 0.6 - 1.0 mp/s. any idea why my phone is so bad at this?

+1 to using the word abysmal!! and the prl thing caused an issue for me too, updating it was the solution that worked for me. My issues was intermittant tho.

just fyi on most sense roms those full bars have no correlation to data speeds technically...you can get full bars and not have data service...aosp calcs different so it does sort of relate on an aosp. Not helpful to your situation, just saying...for future reference

Also Mik is the only sense rom i know that actually tells you whether you are on 1x data or 3g...most just always say 3g regardless

well there is an app for that :) easy access settings is one
I wanna say I read it somewhere (maybe the manual.. who reads manuals...) that the 3g icon and the bars are actually two different meters... the 3g doesn't measure signal, just active connectivity. I'll check the manual real quick..

(real quick)

It was p. 109 if anyone cares to look. The stock rom includes two data icon sets (what I'm calling it...) 1 for 3g (transfer and no transfer) and 1 for 1x (transfer and no transfer). I didn't see anything about the bars in the manual..
