All Things Froyo

Sorry but that wouldn't be possible. The US military inserts a random error into the GPS signal so that the accuracy is always off by several meters. Only the military has recievers with "centimeter" accuracy. Not to mention the fact that the gps signal isn't strong enough to penetrate most buildings....a basement would be pretty impossible.
You know something, that just isn't true - about the accuracy. My Garmin iQue regularly had accuracy around six feet. The alltime best was 5.84 feet. We used to have contests back on the old iQue forum over on Brighthand with our accuracies. So the accuracy isn't measured in meters, more like 'feet' - whatever that translates into, because I don't do metric ;)

As for the non-penetration of buildings, that's absolutely true. GPS signals don't go through ceilings or walls. I get a kick out of people who are inside buildings thinking they're using GPS, that's impossible - unless you're near a window, and, at that, a window without a coating that will stop the signals (there are certain car windshields that block them, too).

Another good rom to flash is the october AT&T leak Xda has it on odin. Its Froyo cut and dry. I have had no issues other than before I rooted and de-bloated, it had the same lag as 2.1 which drove me nuts. After rooting and stripping, it has ran great, one odd thing is that when running seven screens on the far right screen from home, certain spots on the screen will not retain your app icon after reboot. ??????. Its like 4 spots so I just stopped caring and moved those apps to other screens. Its been great for me since october. BTW GPS is perfect.

Not to be inciting anyone, but I hope people realize that it is now impossible for Samsung to make good on their promise of Froyo before 2011. AT&T (as any carrier) releases ota upgrades in waves (like we saw with the JH7 update. That took 3+ weeks to hit everyone based just on the forums here, and if anything they have more Captivates in customers' hands since late September. It might get released to some users before 2011, but not all as promised :/ Sad thoughts while I sit at work tonight...

I know a lot of people have been complaining that this will be their last Samsung phone, and I am starting to agree. Without a working GPS and by the time this phone gets Froyo, every other phone that is getting it will already have it, this phone is starting to not look so good anymore. Samsung better get their act together or a good portion of their Galaxy S customers will not be purchasing any of their future phones, including me.

Sorry, had some outdated infos, apparently better accuracy is achievable now...however a meter is about 3 feet...so the best you could get was about 2 meters...so maybe I exagerate a little...should have said "couple" instead of "several" :o

As much as I don't like the idea, Samsung would not be smart if they didn't halt the froyo updates at least temporarily until they find the problem. All of the international galaxy s versions worked fine, but the US and canadian variants are different, meaning more extensive testing may be required. I don't like it any more than the next guy, but I'd rather have a working update in February than a bricked phone next week.

On the other hand, I would rather have had a working Froyo in July 2010 than a working Froyo in February 2011. Samsung seems to be horrible at planning and testing, so they are giving me no confidence in their future phones.

Agreed.

True, but that didn't happen and there's no going back to fix that either. I'm not saying they shouldn't have released the phone with Froyo originally, but since they decided against it they should at least make sure that it works properly. I can say for sure I'm not getting a Samsung phone when my contract expires, but I still think my phone is better than the iPhone 4. I still have flash lite, and if I really wanted to I could root my phone and install a custom rom. I haven't checked recently, but when I was looking at the iPhone 4 there was no way to jailbreak it easily.

By the time this phone gets Froyo, gingerbread will be on the loose.
I had the captivate, traded it for the evo and traded ATT for sprint. Couldnt be happier. The captivate isnt a bad phone at all, i loved/love it, but samsung makes me angry as well as the no update.

The nexus S was just released with GingerBread..doesnt make sense as it is Samsung and Galaxy S i believe, but whatever.

Idk how loose you are on the term "easily" but i have a few friends with jailbroken 4's. One is running a live wallpaper from a star wars movie.
I hate iphones with a passion and totally agree about the captivate being better, but just saying.

Theres also no real point, jailbreaking an iPhone is like buying a damn android stock. Rooting an android is like...
nothing else...

The current Google phone - in this case, the new Nexus S - will always be a full rev ahead of any other phone.

That's its job.

Can't extrapolate that to any other Galaxy.

Galaxies are already pretty quick - it's a drag that everyone's waiting on Froyo - but I wouldn't call your phones, like, you know, total dogs or anything - I hope that we all agree on that.

It will be better on Froyo - I think about a few days after everyone gets it, most people will forget they had to wait.

(And no, I'm not smoking anything! :D )

I think somebody with a name change misses his old friends. ;)

You must remember, I'm talking about 6 months ago, before the iPhone could be jailbroken as easily as it is now. Still, I guess you can't really count on anything when it comes to cell phones. I honestly have never gotten a phone without being let down in some aspect, with the exception being the Motorola KRZR I bought 5 years ago. Every time I need a backup phone, it's always the perfect backup. The only problem is that it's now highly outdated. It even still has the Cingular logo on it

Your correction is correct. Selective Availability was turned off in 2000.

The military may use DGPS to enhance the accuracy further... but the same hardware is essentially available for civilian use as well.

So it seems after Samsung pulled the intercept froyo last week they gave rereleased a stable version for intercept users to download. Do we think this is a sign for galaxy S getting it soon?

It's sad that the intercept has gotten 2.2 before us. My friend has an intercept, and I'm not sure how that thing can even handle it. It's already kinda slow with 2.1. It's like a slap in the face to all US galaxy s owners.

I understand and have no issues with users who wish to wait for official OS updates.

I understand and have no issues with users who have lost patience with Samsung and have gone their own way (read: custom ROMs).

Until last night I was in the first group. We each have our idiosyncracies, and one of mine is that I place great importance on communication. Inadequate (almost non-existent) communication from Samsung became unacceptable and, so, I elected to move forward with a custom ROM in order to be in greater control of my OS destiny. Other reasons include unaddressed Eclair shortcomings, the existing and anticipated superiority of some of the baked, and frequently updated custom ROMs over the store-bought variety and, the most important reason of all...principle.

Thanks to some friends who are members of this forum who "held my hand" during this new experience. We've got some good folks around here and I appreciate their help in what, for me, were unchartered waters.

^^^ lol

more shocks to come...i think samsung is regretting making galaxy s...such an outstanding customer support is unbelievable..lol

Possible relevant anecdote. My Captivate won't turn on, period - no charger connected indicator screen, computer doesn't see USB connected, just totally blank/black screen. I just returned from the AT&T store where they got me on the phone with the warranty division (or something like that), who escalated me to their Android phone-specific warranty/troubleshooting department.

After answering some questions, trying a few things like holding power+volume buttons for 15 secs, and finally setting up the order for the warranty replacement phone -- AT&T impressed me, actually -- the Android tech guy told me after receiving the replacement phone to log in to my AT&T account and ensure the new phone's IMEI number is recorded in my AT&T account as "an important push update is coming in January and registering your correct IMEI will ensure you receive it."

Unfortunately I didn't get the ask questions about the referenced update. Since I had rooted and lag-fixed the broken phone I went into the AT&T store pretending to be a somewhat clueless user. Though no relation between lagfix/rooting and the dead phone, I didn't know if they were going to ask "did you install any unauthorized software?" type questions that could have hindered my warranty effort so I figured acting clueless was the way to go. Didn't want suddenly break character and start asking about Froyo updates. Stupidly paranoid, I'm sure.

Obviously there's nothing concrete in my story but perhaps a slight reason for some optimism.
