All Things Froyo

Umm.. most of the Galaxy S phones in the rest of the world already got Froyo since mid November. ;)

Not in the US, our hardware is slightly different which makes for different drivers and such, which is also why the I9000 rom builds are not directly compatible with our devices. I think I read somewhere that the Vibrant is the closest to the I9000, and even it has some special drivers.

And actually most of those ones that have received Froyo have been the unlocked versions, the carrier-locked ones are either receiving theirs now or shortly- but at least theirs have been announced and they know the update is coming at some point.;)

I made the decision the other night to flash to cognition. I had to reflash as I didn't follow all the directions and now I'm running a clean rom. To anyone like me who is worried about rooting and flashing, it's actually very easy. I abandoned ubuntu because it started getting complicated getting everything to work, but the root and flashing procedures I followed on youtube required no knowledge or even console commands. Everything went fine and now I don't have to wait for Samsung or AT&T.

You do supposedly void your warranty (I don't know if flashing back to stock and upgrading to the current settigngs would hide what you did or not) but if you can do on your own whatever the warranty would cover; who cares?

I do not regret flashing a custom rom, and I will be looking for reviews of the legit rom vs custom roms before I make a decision to back to legit.

Can you post a link to the youtube video? I'm wary about flashing but if it's easily explained maybe I'll give it a shot.

I also recently flashed to the latest Cognition ROM (2.3b8). There are some quirks but I have to say overall it's an improvement. Here's my super-quick review:

+ Get all the Froyo improvements without having to wait on AT&T
+ Runs quick and lag-free
+ Bloatware-free, more "stock" Android experience
+ Accurate battery meter (with %!) [after calibration]
+ No Exchange email synching issues (so far)
+ Better (but not perfect) GPS performance
+ Gingerbread keyboard is great

- Had severe battery life issues at first - recalibrating battery fixed them
- Issues with Clock/alarms - random force closes
- Miss the puzzle-piece lock screen notifications
- Miss the music player lock screen controls
- Miss the ability to change brightness by swiping status bar

Tips:
1) general consensus seems to be that the best procedure is to flash back to stock, do a Master Clear, and THEN flash to Cognition to avoid issues.
2) If you use Titanium to restore your apps, do not do a batch restore, do them one at a time and only restore apps that are not already loaded in the ROM.

Hope this helps,
W

Well, I think I'll be flashing soon. I exchanged my Cappy today due to the random shutdown issue and the guy at the store told me the official release had been delayed until at least February. He also showed me his Captivate and explained how he had flashed his. This wasn't one of the sales guys either, it was one of their tech people. Time to start reading up on the details...

I really think at&t has given up on froyo for the captivate. There have been unsubstantiatrd rumors for a little while now that the captivate is going to go right to gingerbreas. I am starting to believe that may actually happen.

Rumors are just that. Maybe yes, maybe no.

A lot of the high tech industries shut down at this time - can't say myself, but this week could as easily be a short hiccup attributable to that as anything.

FWIW - it's times like this that in the Android community at large, my-phone-can-beat-up-your-phone goes out the window in favor of those-with pulling for those-without.

I think it would be whacked to skip Froyo and go straight to GB - but - there's no telling what they're really thinking.

The "flash back to stock" advice is for people that already have a custom rom loaded and are upgrading their ROM or trying a different one. It doesn't apply if you are upgrading from stock eclair.

Doing a batch restore of the apps and data should be fine. DON'T do a restore of "system and data". Doing that from an eclair backup with cause all kinds of problems that can only be fixed with a hard reset.

From what I read you should flash back to stock and do a master clear even if you are already on stock. All tutorials that I've read and watched have said to do this regardless if you have a custom rom or not. I think it's just to be on the safe side, even if you DO have a custom rom.

No, the advice to 'flash back to stock' assumes you've already been messing around with your phone. I've asked this question over on XDA and have had several ROM aurthors tell me that if all you've done is root your phone, you're still on the stock ROM, just clear the cache and just proceed from there.

All the Samsung Galaxy S pages except the Captivate are now showing "2.2".

Let's see how long that lasts before they take it down from all the complaints. ;)

Someone should check both this and the "upgradeable to 2.2" for false advertisement. We can't upgrade to something they haven't released yet...

I assume when you say clear the cache you mean a master clear?

I believe so. Point was that there had been no 'fiddling' with the ROM other than rooting (which is necessary to install a custom ROM anyways) so just go from there.

quirk killing me with Cognition: when you select the url in the stock browser, instead of hilighting to replace, it sets the cursor to the right of whatever it's currently setting at. Is there anyway to make selecting the url default to replacing it? That's what I'm used to (and makes sense, and takes less steps) from 2.1 stock. Any help is appreciated!

I don't think it means master clear. Master clear wipes EVERYTHING, even your sd card.

When you use Rom Manager, after you press install rom from sd card, it will give you the option to clear your cache first.

I gave up waiting. Flashed cognition 23b8 last night and love it.

Good for you. Although I use Assonance, I'm glad you made the move to something you enjoy.

Custom ROMs:

1. Today's needs met today.
2. Bugs dealt with in a timely manner.
3. Continuous improvements.
4. Ongoing communication with ROM developer.

Samsung:

None of the above.

You want to clear your internal sd card. That's the point of a master clear. I'm fairly certain you should do this before you install a custom rom.

I hate to speak out of school, not being a Captivate user - but that sounds weird compared to other phones.

Rooting gives access to the physical rom (read only memory) - the sd card should be primarily app storage - unless the rom (intended upgrade image to go into physical rom) in question (and rooting method) is going to partition the sd card and add a Linux filesystem, this seems not quite accurate to me, personally.

Could you maybe double-check that?

I loved cog, but my gps was broke again (worked before on jh7). I reflashed back to 2.1 and did the lag fix. Im happy now (no more lag and gps works). Ill wait for the official froyo now.
