All Things Froyo

So, unless I've missed it posted elsewhere, there's no indication after having read the Froyo release notes that anything GPS-related has been addressed. This, then, officially points to GPS wonkiness being a chip issue. Am I late to this particular party as I have not scoured the GPS sticky? Is this deduction old hat?

My intent is not to post "stuff" belonging in the GPS sticky, but rather to raise a Froyo-specific thought.

I just tried on my wife's captivate it says 2.1-update 1 is up to date.
Looks like it was a false alarm people. For now... (dun dun dunnnnn)

All the AT&T / Samsung links being pointed to are preparatory in advance of the official announcement.

I connected Kies Mini and checked for the update just in case, but there is none currently available. :(

So when the official update is out, the phone will be set back to stock for everything? Nothing will be saved?

On the google cache page it says:
Notice: Please back up all data such as your contacts, pictures, music, videos etc... prior to performing the update as data could be lost
It doesn't seem to say it does a full wipe or not. But def back up just in case.

FWIW - a general thing I see on the forums with many phones, not manufacturer-specific: when revision changes happen to stock phones, things often get tangled and only fixed with a factory reset.

Backups prior to a major update is a very good insurance policy.

Personally - I'm a belt and suspenders guy when it comes to this stuff.

I back stuff up to the SD card, back up the SD card to the PC, and then back up anything I can to the Google cloud.

Oh - PS:

No answer for you on that one - but it's the exact same question being asked in the other Samsung forums.

Would saving contacts to Sim card be enough during the update process?

That's fine. Athough I'm getting ahead of the issue, when you do flash, I recommend removing the SIM card if the Kies process permits. I always do this when flashing a custom ROM since I don't want an incoming phone call to create havoc. Yikes!

Thanks, yeah, I guess it can't hurt to back everything up.

About contacts, since these are saved in my gmail account, do those need to be backed up too? I just mounted and copied over the entire contents of the SD card to my PC.

Yup. Since I have more than 250 contacts, the SIM card won't do for that purpose. I've made what has proven to be a wise investment in purchasing (and using) both MyBackup Pro and Titanium. There have been occasions when one crapped out and the other came to the rescue. As for contacts, they're also in Outlook, yielding 3 backups. Talk about belt and suspenders!

I will definitely remember to do that. I am sitting on the fence on what to do, regarding waiting or flashing a custom rom. I just read some many different things on the web that it makes it difficult to decide what is right for me.

If I may offer a suggestion. I would upgrade to the official Froyo and see how you feel about the results. If it "works" for you, let it be. To do otherwise may be asking for unnecessary trouble as flashing custom ROMs is not something to be taken lightly.

I believe that is the route I'm going to take. I will sit and wait. It's getting frustrating though since new apps in the market that I want need 2.2. Hopefully my patience will be rewarded.

All indications are that your patience will be rewarded (?) soon. Samsung, it appears, is finally about to extract its cranium from another bodily orifice.

"@wilblak Hi William. We are preparing for the froyo update, but we unfortunately do not have an ETA. ^Mary"

This is in regards to the site posting that froyo was released.

Found this on the Epic side of the house, thought some of you might find it useful info:

For those of you wondering what we're talking about regarding the "update support pages"

Samsung has official web pages (place holders until official update comes) that indicate how to update to froyo. The fact that they've "popped up" all of a sudden with dates of 2/15 and 2/16 is a good sign they are testing the support page to prepare for the update (next week?).

This is the captivate page:
http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa/jsp/faqs/faqs_view_us.jsp?SITE_ID=22&PG_ID=2&PROD_SUB_ID=557&PROD_ID=559&AT_ID=356772

This is the Epic 4G page:
http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa/jsp/faqs/faqs_view_us.jsp?SITE_ID=22&PG_ID=2&PROD_SUB_ID=557&PROD_ID=559&AT_ID=356773

Notice the end of the links differ by just one digit. "2" is for the captivate. "3" is for the Epic. "4" is some Galaxy Tab warning about foreign firmware etc etc. So keep your eye out on those "2" and "3" links to see if they come up again soon :)

when these threads get moved they also get forgotten. I understand trying to keep the forums clean and less cluttered but to dump it in this thread just means no more activity and new threaads will get posted by the guys/gals that were at work today and come home to see the other forums posting about it.

Edit: MODS this is not a complaint just an observation. I think you guys do an excellent job and keeps the forums less cluttered :)

Our system lacks an easy way for us to track who on staff is moving things - today's merges are indeed confusing.

It also lacks an undo for merges.

Both things we've submitted for improvements to the programmers.

Meanwhile - I would seriously consider locking this thread and just letting you guys get started with new thread(s) for when this update gets real.

Maybe a clean slate on the waiting Froyo issue would improve things.

Ditto if the update seems to impact GPS.

Looking for feedback on the idea via PM (or, hang a thanks here if in agreement), thanks in advance.
