All Things Froyo

@Jus10

>>>> I successfully updated to 2.1-upgrade just fine OTA. Maybe since there's extra features on 2.2 instead of just "fixes", that might have something to do with it?

From what I have heard from folks who could be in the know, the 2.1 upgrade was about 12MB. The 2.2 release is closer to 250.

If that is true, not sure I want that going OTA

FWIW - the Epic froyo release has an OTA update option. :o

So you're not natively running in Win 7 but through Win XP emulation?
edit: Ahh I understand.

Thanks I think I have this driver but I'll check.
Cheers

no, I'm natively running Windows 7 64-bit. On windows 7 I have VMware player, and one of the machines I emulate is a Pentium III with Windows XP, so Windows XP is not native. It just works for me. Make sure you use Kies(Firmware Upgrade) as the connection option, connect the phone, wait for the phone to show up in My Computer (takes about 30 seconds to a minute for me), then open Kies Mini.

I'm pretty sure that if this going to be using Kies mini, then the device will have to go into debugging mode first..which in my case anyway, allows Kies to see my device instantly on my windows 7 64 bit laptop

Looks like there is no options for Mac users. You are lucky if your phone connects via USB. I am not, so I don't even have an option to use a Windows VM to do the upgrade.

I was actually going to look into rooting tomorrow too...coming here tonight to see what all I had to do...

Well, gonna do the real update and see if that takes care of some of the known issues or not....

It looks like the Froyo 2.2 update comes to AT&T tomorrow! I already have Cognition installed though so I'm not sure if I'm going to try this update. Does anyone think it'd be worth it to switch from Cognition to the official 2.2 update?

No worries I work IT so you don't have to explain. I'm sorry if I worded that wrong. What I meant was you're not running the Kies natively in Win 7. Then I wrote I understand. So I assume you're running Home premium and not professional or ultimate? I ask this since WinXp mode is a free download for pro and ultimate? Or you prefer to use vmware for the extra options?
All in all Samsung can F off. None of us should have to go through this shit. They should have drivers that work on all OS's from XP to Win 7 32 and 64bit without these issues.
I'll update to Froyo on one of my XP machines at work tomorrow. Already have it prepped just for this.
Thanks for your input :)

No one has the official update yet [and leaked offical Roms of the update is not the same thing] so just wait and see what we get.

I have Home Premium, but I would still use VMware for the extra options anyway even if I had Pro or Ultimate. Plus I need VMware for Mac OS 9 and Windows 98 for legacy programs anyway, so it's really a no-brainer for me. I'm so glad I never throw out my OS disks :D

And yes Samsung needs to get their head out of the sand and realize that not everyone owns XP. Although doesn't the International Kies verson have a Mac and Linux option?

Well it's official at&t rolls their froyo update for the captivate tomorrow. But I have a question. Im on a custom ROM cognition but if I want to to flash back to stock 2.1 then update to 2.2 through at&t how would I flash back to stock ? And is rooting on 2.2 the same as 2.1, with the zip file? Thanks!:D

I flashed the leaked 2.2 today. Everything works great, but I can't get it to root right! It says it's rooted, but won't give permission to any of my root apps like TiBackup.

can you tell me how to flash back, and we can work together on the rooting problem.

This was my very first flash, so I was running stock Eclair when I did this update and didn't have to flash back.

I downloaded the update from the link posted earlier on here, and I used Odin3 to flash it and backed up all my apps and data to my external SD card using TiBackup.

You have to have superuser installed, you can get it from market. Do you have an app called superuser?

Flash back with this version of odin

I have flashed back from 6 different 2.2 roms and have been able to run the update from AT&T every time, yes every time. The odin one click does not work, but that one does

I had the Superuser app when I downloaded Super one-click, but I guess it wasn't super enough because TiBackup didn't recognize the root rights.

I use the old version of Kies so that I can use the tethering ability, will I have to "revert" to Kies mini to be able to do my update? Does 2.2 have tethering capability? Will the old version of Kies work with 2.2 and if so, can I do the update thru that without updating Kies? Thx
