AMOLED vs. LCD Screens

Side by side we all had a hard time telling the difference but we didn't really compare the same pictures or get the deep comparing, at first and second glance on web pages and such, they looked pretty much the same.

Still loving the DI though, will try to root later today.

take those phone outside in direct sunlight and youll be amazed that you can actually use/see your phone while the others cant;)

When off does your screen have a blue tint to it? if it does its an amoled.

I don't have the box, don't know when it was purchased. I compared to my friends Amoled screen, we couldn't really tell a difference they both kinda looked black or dark, maybe super dark blue tint but we couldn't tell in the end if they looked the same or not.

There's got to be a way to tell by numbers. Both of ours are ADR6300 Model. Couple things were different between his and mine. His hardware build is 0002, mine 0003. He bought his the first week they were out.

There was another difference too in Software Info, I think the build or maybe the kernal number was a little bit different at the end of the string.

I want to root this thing but I can't figure out if it has an Amoled screen or not.

Any help is appreciated.

i just received a refurbished phone as a warranty replacement. it was originally an amoled phone because the hardware version is 0002 and also version number behind battery is adw6300vw.

here's where it gets hairy, i believe the phone received an slcd screen during the refurb process because there was a very distinct difference between the picture on my new and old phone. all the places that were dark grey (notification bar, slider bar, etc) were much lighter grey on the new phone. also, when i restart the phone i do see the some light come on when it should be black just prior to the boot animation.

the thing that makes me curious is how many people here are stating that there is hardly a difference between the displays, but i notice a very large difference. when side by side it is so obvious which one is which by looking at the grey areas (color is more difficult to distinguish). i could even tell which phone i was using if i just closed my eyes and randomly picked one up. they were distinctly different. could it be that my display settings are just different on the new phone? if so, how could this be changed? i liked the darker version better. before you ask, no it isn't just my basic brightness settings. i had them both at full, both at automatic, and both at minimum. the difference was noticeable for all settings.
 
I just made the switch to an SLCD incredible from a droid X and am really impressed with the SLCD vs the X. The incredible has more contrast, deeper blacks and overall looks sharper. Compared to my wifes super amoled I still prefer the SLCD with the exception of the deeper blacks of the amoled. I was actually wanting an amoled incredible but the slcd doesn't disappoint.
 
I also came from an X and think the SLCD screen on the Inc looks much better...plus, the Inc is actually customizable unlike the X's locked bootloader.
 
Yeah that was one of the main reasons I wanted to move to the incredible. I'm still adjusting to the size difference and battery performance on the incredible.
 
I'm amazed at how many people are saying that they prefer the SLCD over the X's screen, given their relative limitations. I really haven't done any comparisons with the one SLCD Incredible I've played with, but I suppose now would be a good time.

For the record, Sony's SLCD is an 18-bit panel, while Motorola is using a 24-bit panel on their phones. This isn't a huge deal today where many aspects of Android are limited to 16-bit. However, I heard that Gingerbread or Honeycomb might allow support for 32-bit rendering, and if that occurs, then these phones should start to show some big differences.
 
LOL at this whole thread. I just ordered this phone and can care less what screen I get. The differences between the two are so negligible its laughable. I have seen both screens side by side and both are really nice, vibrant, crisp displays. All im really concerned about is if I can easily interpret information on the phone. Im not going to pic nits about darker blacks or crisper numbers etc. I just saw the comparison video of the two and that speaks volumes about how silly this whole discussion really is.LOL:D
 
I have had both, but I had to have VZ ship me another AMOLED because my glasses are polarized. When you put the SLCD screen in landscape mode it is completely BLACK if you have polarized glasses on making it unusable. I like the color (over)saturation of the AMOLED as well so I'm doubly happy! Verizon didn't question my need for an AMOLED and they shipped one out next day air. Thanks Big Red!
 
I used to be a big advocate of AMOLEDs, and was really excited about the incredible because of it. But my girlfriend recently bought an Incredible, which of course came with an SLCD, and I have to say, I'm jealous. It's much brighter, the text is noticeably crisper, and the colors appear more "correct" to me. My grays always looked too pink for my taste, and with our phones side by side, hers just looks better and sharper. So much so, in fact, that in a dark room where all you can see is two floating screens, hers looks like an entirely different phone. Either my AMOLED is royally messed up, or there really is a major difference between the two displays.

That said, I've always noticed that the colors on my phone, particularly when taking outdoor photos, are just surreal and gorgeous. When you see something truly beautiful, like a perfectly blue sky, and snap a picture with the Incredible, that photo will look perfect on the Incredible, when I move it to my computer, it's still nice, but not as vivid. I haven't loaded a picture like that on to her phone, so that may be one positive to an AMOLED.
 
Those of you that can't see the differences, all you need to do is turn down the screen brightness and they become immediately apparent... I hate the SLCD... Eveything has a very pink hue if you don't run full brightness...
 
Ok, I was in Chicago over Thanksgiving and my dinc got broke. I was sitting downstairs and my phone came out of my pocket and went into the chair without my knowing. Needless to say, I got to missing it when I went to bed, and lo and behold, it was inside the recliner (i had it leaned back) and the display was shattered.

The weird thing is, only the screen inside was busted. The digitizer looks perfect without even a blemish on it. There was so very minor scaring on the black trim piece around the display on the left hand side, but the scaring didn't look bad enough to warrant shattering the display inside.

I took it apart yesterday, removed the old screen (for now), and inspected the internals and display. From what I can tell, there is no damage other than the display screen which leads me to my question.

I found a OEM Samsung display for my phone, but it's an lcd not an amoled. Would it cause any problems to put the lcd into it? It seems as though I read somewhere that there was a difference between the two, but I cant remember where the thread was at.

Any help or advice is appreciated!
 
I have a local cell phone store who is da bomb - when I didn't know any better and was using BlackBerry, they must have replaced 3 screens for me due to water damage or dropping - they always had spare parts ON hand and were able to repair on the fly.

Anyway, after purchasing my Incredible and reading about the switch to LCD mid-production, I stopped by my store to see if they had an AMOLED on hand. They weren't sure if what they had in stock was LCD or AMOLED, but they did know it would fit the DINC and how much it would cost.

So....please help me identify whether this display is LCD or AMOLED. Based on the fine print on the back, tt was manufactured by Samsung (who I heard makes the amoled). It has a part number 62h00921-OOP or -00P.

I have the slcd and the brigthness is down almost all the way. No pink. If I turn it completely down the screen is too dark but stillno pink.
 
confused... which one looks better and how do you tell which one you have? I got a referb back in Sept, looked the same as the one I bought in April? I thought the phone's screen looked great, if SLCD is better... wow. Also can someone post where the phone screen was going to change to SLCD? Everything you read says it has AMOLED

OK, I'll try to tackle your questions in order. Which one looks best, that really depends. SLCD is sharper, so text looks better while AMOLED has much truer blacks, far better contrast, and IMHO the colors look better (the last one could go either way really, I like AMOLED). For what I want the phone to do, I prefer AMOLED. Also AMOLED is generally more efficient (report AMOLED's being 30% better in drain tests, that an AMOLED phone would have 30% charge left when the SLCD phone dies, after having the screen on constantly at full brightness). These tests PROBABLY will be reflected in the performance for the TYPICAL user, but that entirely depends on actual usage. AMOLED's displaying whites at full brightness might possibly use more power that an SLCD screen under the same conditions.

How do you tell which one. If you had picked ANY PAGE at random to read in this thead, it would tell you to check the hardware version in the ABOUT PHONE->Hardware Information section of your settings menu. Version 0002=AMOLED, Version 0003=SLCD.

Here is the part number again - it is the part number of the actual screen (i.e. the loose part, at the cell repair store), not the number of the phone.

Says Samsung. Yes, Samsung makes the AMOLED, but is every screen Samsung makes necessarily AMOLED or might this part be LCD?
