Android 2.1 HERO News

Thanks quantumrand. Do you know if I am running the latest firmware (v.2.73.405.5) for the Hero then? And how can I tell what version of the Android OS my hero is running?

2.73.x.x is the latest version officially available right now. the .x.x part are just carrier and regional numerics. To check your current firmware (it'll be 1.5) go to Settings > About Phone, and there will be a Firmware listed.

Will 2.1 be available for the U.S model? i have the sprint version and im wondering if i should look forward to this update or not.

I would imagine they'll come out with a 2.1 version for the CDMA phones as well. Adapting the ROM will take very little work on their part.

Your are right, it's 1.5. I'll continue to enjoy it with the 2.73 ROM and look forward to upgrading to the 2.1 OS when it arrives. Thanks again for bringing some clarity to this for me man, docal

On the screen where you see 2.73.xxx:

You should also see "Firmware version" and 1.5

This is Android 1.5

Nah, I don't think they did.

I have read it in various locations - but that doesn't mean the source was not the same..........

2.1 doesnt mean anything for Hero owners, 2.0 is already out technically - this announcement doesnt change when HTC are going to release 2.X for the Hero.

If anything it could delay things!?

Yeah the 11th relates to the official 2.1 release, very unlikely that the hero update will be the 11th unless HTC have had early access to 2.1.

Personally i doubt we'll see it before they new year.

SORRY SORRY!! Okay then it will be out tomorrow. Is that better? :D

Jesus guys i dont have a clue when it's out i'm just guesstimating.

I know I'm impatient, and I don't want to start another rant about the update.

Just wish it was here - that's all.

Just out of interest, is anyone else going to wait for a modaco version? I'm rooted and running 2.9, and I'd rather wait.

I'm gonna wait. I don't understand this HTC bashing about not releasing SW quick. We should be thankful that they are at all. I did not read on the box when I bought it that I would get updates. Ok so bug fixes are different but if HTC just stayed on 1.5 + occasional fw upgrades for bug fixes we would have zero right to complain.

PS. I am looking forward to 2.x but know well as soon as that is out there will be new reasons to demand more features.

On friday htc tweeted "Droid Eris is getting an update to a newer version of Android early next year. Google Navigation support is coming your way ;)" so i guess the Hero update will be Jan 2010.

:-(

Yes, it might be true, what @julesp said. Since HTC considers the hero and the eris to be similar devices. I just wish it was earlier, but, if time is needed for making a better build, I'd wait.

I read somewhere that HTC was saying "by Christmas." I would assume they'd release it for the European Hero first, just because it's the more popular device as well as being the first released. It would make sense then that the Eris and Sprint Hero would follow shortly after (as-in early January).

I've just had a email from HTC.
Saying hand on heart they really have no idea when the Eclair is coming to the hero.

That's it.
