Another SGS2 preview woohoo!

I don't take that early benchmarks by them seriously any more. That was just early proto-type with unfinished drivers. I'm sure it will beat Tegra2 in most categories if not all. The only worthy competitor to it is TI OMAP4 in my mind.

Well, why don't we find out. I googled "Samsung Galaxy S dimensions" and "Samsung Galaxy S 2 dimensions" and found this:

Galaxy S: 122.4 x 64.2 x 9.9 mm, 119g
Galaxy S2: 125.3 x 66.1 x 8.5 mm, 116g

So Galaxy S2 is 2.9mm longer, 1.9mm wider, 1.4mm thinner and 3g lighter than the original. That's not bad at all, considering the superior hardware and bigger screen.

What I meant is that screen on S2 takes larger portion of total size than on Galaxy S. So the physical dimension of phone is not so bigger than the increase screen size makes it out to be. Anyway here is the actual physical dimension of Fascinate and SGS2.

Fascinate: 125 x 64 x 10.5 mm
Galaxy S2: 125.3 x 66.1 x 8.5 mm

It's just tad bigger but much thinner than Fascinate.

Interesting! I thought I saw a video of the Fascinate next to the Gs2 and could've sworn the S2 was noticeably larger.

I'm still weary of Samsung though. If battery life is really good, no GPS issues, good call quality, LTE, no lag and 2.3, I may consider it. Probably not, but it'll be the best Verizon dual core phone for a while. Dont know why they wouldn't make the phone thicker to accommodate a larger battery. And I wish screen was 4"
 
Wow, I'm really tired...

:) I'm still worried about the battery life too... Guess we'll have to wait 'til it comes out before we know for sure.. I might get an extended battery for it anyway. I don't care if it makes it thicker.

It's funny that you list battery life as a concern or potential reason to not get this one. Samsung has pretty much proven in Galaxy S that they have good handle on power management much better than HTC, at least on par with Motorola if not better. Of course there are exceptions to any phone depending how, where it's used or if it happens to be unfortunate unit with bad battery. I don't know single android phone that didn't get any complains on battery.

GPS has been fixed since Nexus S with new chip, it will have 2.3, no laggy RFS file system. Whether you like it or not, this phone will rule the android world this year. Honestly I don't think SGS2 getting proper attention it deserves here.
 
I wanted to see some clips of the UI features between the GS II and 2X. I think the GS II has the edge in that too.

Samsung once again is tops in the camera comparisons. The lower score in the gpu test could be any number of things right now. Could even be the Tegra 2 gpu is a lil better. Even if it is a cap like what was on the GS 1, root is your friend... I would love to see if the LG 2X can be tweaked to have an even higher fps. The browser performance was nice on the GS II.

Right now...I'm not even thinking about phones on Verizon. The GS II and LG phones have all my attention now. I am so close to switching carriers. Hopefully the GS II comes to Big Red.
 
GS2 clearly wins 2X in the browsing test. Again very smooth and looking like fluid, probably the best in android phones. Real gaming test doesn't look any worse than 2X except the last one in the video clip. It was quite laggy. Something was not right there. Hopefully it's a software glitch on test unit.

It will likely come to AT&T first. But according to some folks here, VZW would get it soon in Q2, not so long after AT&T. I will see how it plays out. I don't like AT&T due to their lackluster coverage and service.

Well, my experience with the Nexus S was not so positive; I didn't text extensively but the only Android phone I've used with instant GPS lock is the Incredible.

And re: RFS...I saw something about a system dump on XDA that showed the GS2 was still using RFS...but I'm not sure. Let me dig it up.

Either way, I know Verizon will just keep the internal mem to 2 GB. Bastards.
 
The 1080p recording test on the gsmarena article is lame because they put the thing on a tripod and recorded cars driving by, like a pro. I need to see shaky cam performance and walking around with it looking at random things performance, like a real amateur, I mean, normal person. There's also no sound besides that of traffic, and I can't gauge recording quality from traffic. Someone needs to start singing. That's one prime use for a camera, recording drunk people whilst singing. The Motorola Atrix and HTC Inspire/Thunderbolt, and all their predecessors, had some awful light exposure sensitivities, where the slightest angle change would make the entire picture change brightness from light to dark to light to dark in a matter of seconds, like a case of epilepsy. The Galaxy S didn't have this problem and I know the SGS2 doesn't either, but gsmarena really just dropped the ball on something so basic and it kind of annoys me since they try to be technical about everything else with comparison tools and brightness readings but can't be bothered to go around and do a spin with the camera like a lousy Russian reviewer instead of meticulously setting it up with a tripod in perfect lighting conditions. :confused::confused::confused::confused:

So you had better battery life with Incredible than Nexus S? If anything, incredible is known to be one of the worst phone when it comes to battery. A lot of Dinc users switched to SF and got much happier with battery life.

Don't automatically assume that Verizon will dumb down SGS2 memory just because they did it to SF.

Please read my post again :-)

I have not had good GPS experience with any phone OTHER than the Incredible. I didn't mean battery life. In fact I said ive had underwhelming battery life so far woth several android phones.

And I wouldn't put it past VZW to dumb down a phone. The people making the big decisions aren't very technical it seems. Business people usually aren't.

The Fascinate was the only SGS phone to have less than 16 gb internal memory.

Dont get me wrong, I want this phone to be a monster but carriers and manufacturers always seem to get wrong at least one critical thing. Well see.
 
Idk how many times I may have said it but the SGSII is one sexy ass device. Performs excellent to. I feel like it's out already, but that can't be true because I would have it already lol. I can't wait to be geeked out and sharing my videos and home screens etc. I don't even think I would root it... Na, I would lol. Just to get any bloat that might come that I know I won't use. & only if a good dev was to come with a pure gingerbread rom and no bloat like ASOP for it.

I actually have to disagree - I love how they did it. I'd want to see something I can reproduce. Their test just says "if you put the phone on tripod and film cars moving on local street on a sunny day, this is how your video will look like".
Bad samples say this: "if you have an unknown number of drinks and start filming some strange unclear object in some weird place under unknown lighting, this is how your video will look". I can't reproduce the latter and thus it says nothing to me.

The point is that they used it in a narrow way and did not hand hold it like a normal person, or even bother to move it around and show motion performance. This can be deceiving and does not show shaky cam performance, light adjustment, motion blur, or the jello effect that many cameras have. There is no indoor or low light performance examples either. These all matter when comparing video recording and real world usage, and the SGS2 trumps a lot of phones in these aspects, but you wouldn't be able to tell with a stationary image. I have no idea what you are talking about.
