This is an interesting observation. It makes sense based on the technology used to enable the Note's stylus why it does not activate the capacitive hardware buttons. The Note's inductive stylus draws electrical energy from the grid under the screens glass. Other device's and third party generic capacitive stylus' acts as a pass through for our bodies own natural electrical field.

Like you are saying, what doesn't make sense is why Samsung didn't do anything differently to enhance the experience and make it uniformed. Like you mention one way would be to use on screen buttons. Another would be to use a different technology behind the stylus. Or use a different technology behind the ubiquitous hardware keys.

On that same Note (no pun intended), there was no reason to include such a huge home button that is raised. Most folio cases do not have a indentation in the cover for that button. So if one puts the Note in their pants pocket, the button can be pressed and thus turn on the display without you knowing it.
Then again, that happens regardless of folio cover if the pants are tight.

I'm extremely unfamiliar with Samsung's software and it shows. But I thought for sure they would have had a setting in the configuration to turn off the 'wake phone via home key' feature. For snug pockets and purses it is a no brainer. Samsung should update the settings for this reason alone.
You'd think after the Note, Galaxy S II, Galaxy S III, plus others, all with hardware home keys they have had ample time to provide it as an option.

Being that the Note 3 is rumored to have a 5.8 in screen, it would be great to have on-screen buttons.

So looks like there are certain standards that have been set for next year. I love the Note 2 way more than I even anticipated, but we should see the following bumps for the Note 3:

- 5.8 inch screen (hopefully with on-screen buttons that'll allow for the current form factor to stay the same or extremely close that nobody could realistically notice, while also being able to use the s-pen to interact with the soft keys)
- 1080p
- 12mp camera

Realistically, all of the changes that they'd make to this phone would have to be on the software side for it to really "wow" me. The hardware alone, for the Note 2 was enough to convince me to get 2 (Sprint and International). The Note 3 would have to be a huge jump (again) in order for me to consider it, since I'm not eligible for upgrade again until the summer of 2014 (seems so long away).

Considering that Samsung sees the Note series as being the new flagship series (sorry S3, sorry Nexus) its easy to come up with specs that will blow everything out of the water and keep it as a flagship device.
(granted flagship is a term overused since most manufacturers come out with devices every few months and each one is labeled flagship)

The 13mp camera that was suppose to be in the Note II will be in the Note III
Unbreakable glass (which is rumored to be in the S4)

I have the same date for my upgrade. My contract is up in June of the same year. I think I will wait to see what the GS5 or Note 4 will bring. lol. As for now I am happy with the way Samsung has been handling the updates with the GS3. We will soon have the Multi-View feature in 4.1.2 and other features. They are moving at a good pace.

I think they'll stick to the current standard of 2GB. A lot of phones are still stuck on less than 2GB, but then again I wouldn't be surprised if they decide to up it to 3 or 4.

I believe there's a Linux kernel upon which Android is based that facilitates multi-tasking. The extra gig of ram will enable better multi-tasking and is why project butter/JB/KLP and going forward Android versions will be able to operate with smoothness despite increasing complexity.

Just like on a PC, more ram won't show up under normal circumstances. But if you run multiple spreadsheet analytics and an intense program like Adobe's full image program, same-spec'd PCs with a higher ram usually have a smoother experience than lower ram. Both will run, but one will be a much better experience.

I question whether that's the case on most phones right now, but start dropping advanced color arrays on 1080p screens doing multitasking and that extra gig of ram will be very welcome indeed

Just like my desktop I prefer more ram for smoother operating of anything I want to do on it. I may not need it all the time but when I do it's there.

I believe going forward we will see 2gb ram become the standard. Yet can only hope 32gb becomes the storage minimum. Again, we may not need all that room but it's nice to know it's available to use if you did need it.

I'm not one of those people upset I can't store apps on SD cards.

My thoughts are that it will probably stay at 2GB ram, I don't think it will increase to 2.5 or 3 until Note 4.

They may increase the ram if they
1-implement dual OS such as Android and Linux or Android and Tizen
2-Increase multiview capabilities that may bog down the system if it stayed at the current ram
3-for heavy use apps such as a possible Microsoft Office for Android on the way.

But that is only my opinion (or my wish)

I Repeat, for my needs, so I am not saying for everyone else. Everyones' needs are different.

Went to AT&T for the first Note and while the speeds were great, they started to slow down. Plus dropped calls. Their website sucks trying to get to the info I need for my phone. (Verizon isn't any better with their Fios location either). I'm seeing alot of Sprint network vision improvements not only here in NYC but across the country. It is not like the wimax deployment of yesteryear and I firmly believe they are on the right track. if it wasn't for Sprint, (in other words, if they never existed), I may have gone with T-Mobile, but AT&T is one that I am not going back to. Verizon, well lets just say, again, for my needs, they are an overly bloated monopolistic wannabe that would rather screw its customers for their bottom line. Then again, Sprint may turn out like them in the future,
But nothing is ever certain, things change and my carrier may at one point
but for now, Sprint is the carrier that best suits my needs.

A check-back and thanks for those patient with me while looking for a phone for WifelyMon earlier.

Last week BestBuy had a one day free LTEvo for new and _upgrade_ customers.

She found the Note 2 too big, the Q keyboard too crowded. They didn't have the Mach on display and the extra glass on the G was out of the question.

So she went with the LTEvo, tried a bunch of keyboards, and likes the stock HTC one. It's bigger and the screen has enough real estate for her on that, so she's becoming very happy with glass typing. (Reminder, she always used a slider before, last one was the Sherman M1 Shift.)

Icing on the cake - Amazon had the blue Otterbox Defender for $22, $30 with express shipping, and she loves the color.

S-off and running Viper4G, she's not only happy, she found the setup that she likes better than her Shift.

No reason why makers can't have bumped phones up to 32GB by now so of these predictions, I'm not holding out for this one unless it becomes the new standard.

Problem is - people have been buying 16GB models of everything and makers are likely to see that they can just go with whatever the lowest/cheapest amount of memory is necessary.

The only thing that I believe will spur this into a better direction is if (and I don't expect this either) Apple decides to include external storage on iPhones.

My wife will be fine with her 10 GB built in sd card. I have a 64 GB card and already I'm beginning to wish I had 128.

The thing I hate about missing sd card slots is that it cuts into my motto that Android is all about choice. When you have to use a different model to get more storage, that's crazy.

I'd be using something else if the LTEvo had lacked a card slot. Crazy.

Agreed, but I'm just pointing out that SS probably won't push the storage options to it's fullest potential because Apple doesn't do external SD cards. None of the other Android manufacturers even comes close to selling enough to threaten SS Android lead.

Woz is correct in stating that the iPhone weak points that matter most are it's lack of expandable memory and it's lack of screen size. Those are SS and other Android makers key opportunities, yet they still know they can get away with just offering screen enhancements and leaving the memory alone.

Eventually someone will break. I thought HTC would have by now.
