Root Awesome Android Update 4 Released

Thanks to Shinru for all the time and hard work you are investing into the new rom...it's fast and smooth. Any recommended dos or don't for apps and/or launchers? I was thinking about downloading a new app for contacts b/c this one isn't allowing you to edit your contacts...not a big deal though...I never really cared for the stock contact app to begin with.

You can edit your contacts, it's a kind of a long process but you can.
Go to contacts, tap the grey-ish picture on the left of your contact name and a little window will pop-up, tap the top part, above the name and you gonna see your contact name and phone number, now tap the phone menu button and you'll see a list of different selections, the first one is edit. ;)

as for the voice mail issue... you guys tried setting it up lol? this phone uses sprint voice mail not boosts system. i called mine for the first time earlier and to my surprise i had to set it up.... lol

This is good to know and have on hand, I like preparing as far ahead as possible, before plunging.

I'm encouraged, that the man, that gave us such a marvelous ROM, is himself sharing each minor hick-up as it's encountered :)

Re-reading this thread and it does get .... clear-er.

Thanks shinru2004

Overall, loving the ROM - thanks for you hard work. But where can I find an installable Email.apk? I'm missing my work emailz :(

and just for reference people, every app (yes even the ones you would never want like connection optimizer and boost zone) from the original stock rom can be found in my deodexed zip, or in the stock rom backup. both of which are posted on this forum somewhere, so if there are any apps that you want back they are available to you
ill even make it easy for you

if you want any of the apps you cant get back with the play store, there they are, every single one of them

p.s. dont just install these unless you want the stock rom back, pick them apart and select what you want and manually install it

Thanks, I'm sure I could have found a suitable replacement in the store. I personally like the ICS/JB UI - third party devs like to spin their own UI w/ new quirks.

But for my own edification - why remove the stock email at all? Is it not part of AOSP? If not, how come it's not included in the gapps packs? Any insight is appreciated.

just trying to trim the fat, personally i have never used the email app and never will. all my accounts are gmail, i had gmail when it was by invite only, so damned long they gave me over 10gb of storage space. i can see needing it for work emails... but as far as personal use i say just use a gmail account, its not like you dont have to have a google login anyway

Makes sense if no one ever uses it. Work is really the only reason I need the stock Email app - it's nice to be able to silo and silence all that stuff on evenings/weekends.

All my personal email accounts are linked to Gmail, also been a user since invites were needed, approx. 10.1 GB mailbox limit.

Make sure you copy email.apk and exchange.apk they go together.

Does anything go with the voicemail apk? It does not work to just copy it over and change permissions. It loads but does not connect to my account.

Shiru,

On the forums concerning other phone models, and other carriers, I've learned, that Andoid ICS has had app's, stripped out by Boost, like native tethering. I wondered if those basic apps can be put back into your Shinjitsu ROM?

Would solve problems on this end if it was.

Thanks.

wifi tether for root users works well, that is what i use and its free on the play store. we may be able to put those apps back tho if we can get our hands on them, the problem is things like native tethering include menu options and i dont think he can edit the settings menu

I've got WiFi Tether, it's found by my tablet, it connects, and then a couple minutes later, the WiFi Tether, stops. On the phone, I have to start it again.

Another thing, is (if I understand right) 3G, and WiFi, are two different animals. I turn off WiFi, in the phone, and find it's turned back on, when this connection re-set's.

Reading this other forum section on tether now, to see what I'm missing.

Junkie,

That's good information, if the menu/settings/options, aren't able to be changed, (easily) now I can understand why certain choices are made during ROM making.

Not much else to say I can learn from the "tether nerf" forum.

I'm spoiled by year's of Window's programs, and computer how-to's, I think, so when apps I like, and that seem to work, (sort of, sometimes), are begging for me to make changes in the settings. Then, the reality hit's, that, I can't learn on the phone in the ap, No read-me.

I've got to go on the PC, dig and dig, to MAYBE, get some third party who's offering a lesson, or YouTube. You get the picture.

Thanks for the quick help.

are you using the shinjitsu rom? because i had issue with it when i had connection optimizer enabled on the stock rom.
this rom removes that

the most likely problem tho is the connection kill the phone does when its not directly in use, you have to go into the phone settings
hit more... under WIRELESS & NETWORKS
hit Mobile networks
and check the box next to Always-on mobile data

also here are the settings i used for wifi tether for root users

Device-Profile: Generic ICS/JB
WiFi-driver reload checked
Routing fix checked

one more thing, you dont want wifi turned on when you start wifi tethering, leave it off the program will turn it on properly for itself

like i said i am currently using wifi tether for root users, im using it to post this right now in fact and its my only means of connecting to the internet with my computer or any device in the house that isnt my phone. everything runs off that phones connection, and it all works once those settings are adjusted properly, without setting mobile data to always on though the data connection kills after about 10-20 mins of the screen being off, without connection optimizer disabled or removed it screws everything up trying to access the wifi while its in use, and those settings for the program itself make sure that wifi tether knows how to send and recieve the information properly

set it all up like i have it and it will work i can almost promise you, dont bother with another tether program most of them are incompatable. believe me it took a long time to find this one and get it running right but now its nice and stable

Yea, I had those setting's, except for the driver re-load checked, I'll try that.

Also, found elsewhere (http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-boost-mobile/671741-wifi-goes-dead.html), another setting, being advised, is keep WiFi on during sleep, I hesitated to change that on the tablet.

But, will also try that.

No, I have almost gotten my nerve up to where I will install shinjitsu, I'm right there ... and find, a most basic question needs answering. Just sitting with wonder of how boost, percieves this new rom, being installed, how, my account might be impacted, and what risks are involved that in the rush to "change' and take "ownership" of my phone, might place me in ... and that's why I haven't.

I'm old enough, and have simply taken such costly risks so many times, that I see hesitance as wisdom, not just as being afraid of the unknown.

ok so there is your problem, connection optimizer and always on data
go into the system settings on the phone, go to more.., go to mobile networks, check the box next to always-on mobile data, press ok when it warns you about usage, then go into connection optimizer and uncheck it turning it off. then it will work. untill you do that no tethering program will ever work right

no need to research anything, no need to do anything but turn always on data on and connection optimizer off, then it will work i guarantee it

Have the "generic ics/jb wlan0" already,
And driver reload
And access-Control,
Routing Fix
Want to enable encryption, but it prevents the tablet connecting.
