[Battery] Fixes and Tips

probably not a bad tip but i would prefer auto sync with everything getting synced real time rather than having to manually sync. anyway when you have 50% at the end of the day can you roll it over kinda like the att&t minutes? low charge at the end of the day....plug it in

Well I've turned my FB and Gmail sync on but have kept other things off. This should still give me more battery for other apps.

I appreciate everyone's tips for better battery life but there are a limited number of compromises i'm willing to live with for better battery life.

I understand I can't have my GPS on all the time and having bluetooth and wifi on without using them is a waste. Thats what the quick power control widget is for.

But frankly, I got a smartphone to be a smartphone. And HTC/verizon should have known to put in a bigger battery.

My conspiracy theory is that they originally planned on downclocking the phone to 768mhz as NKT has reported but then saw people's reaction and decided to bump it back up to 1ghz with no time left to change the design.

Autosync once every hour or two is important. I like receiving my twitter/facebook feed and i like auto contact and calendar sync as well.

I bought an extra charger for work and for the car from monoprice. Hopefully this will alleviate some battery woes.

If not there is always an extended battery

I was just giving out a tip to help out the people who wanted to get more out of their batteries. And I did not write the article. I just tried the author's suggestion as a "test" to help others out. Seesh!

Anyways, good tip on the GPS. I leave it off most of the time unless I'm doing local search or Navigation (main reason I want to save as much battery as possible).

I, like many, suffer from battery depression. I've been scouring the forums and grasping at straws to figure out how I can improve battery life without cutting out features. I also ordered a new TP2 battery that should be here in a couple days. But today I decided to try something....

THE EXPERIMENT: I plugged in my phone last night and woke up this morning to a green LED. I turned my phone completely off and plugged it again. Alas, a red LED which did not turn green for another 20 mins. I then unplugged my phone and plugged it back in again; RED LED for another 20 mins! I did the same thing over, in total of 3 times.

RESULT: My battery right now is showing 98% after being off the charger for nearly 2 hours. It used to go to 90% in 10 mins!

Am I on to something here? I think this is more proof that the battery isn't being charged all the way, perhaps maybe only 70% of it's capacity on the initial charge. I am hoping that the battery "remembers" how full it can actually charge to so that I do not have to repeat all the steps above every time i charge the phone.

UPDATE 1: 5 Hours since charge - Battery is showing 88% . in this time I have had 3G on, browsed for about 20 mins, Pandora for another 20 mins and have been checking and sending email. Also checked some stocks.

UPDATE 2: 7 Hours since charge - Battery is showing 78%. Used google maps which required GPS. Talked on my bluetooth for about 1/2 hour. Sent some more email.

....

True.. but they didn't. I kind of wish that too.

If the extra charger and car charger don't alleviate it, then there are some serious issues.

Extended battery or simply another one to carry around. They're not much larger than a couple of quarters.

Hmmm there was someone posting similar results using desk charger. And this battery was awesome first time I used it after pulling it out if the Eris. Now not so much so maybe you are on to something

I noticed this as well, I figured it wasn't charging when off though. Maybe I'll try it a couple hours.

thanks for bringing it up

ok i understand that everyone wants bettery battery life but come on....its a smart phone. if you want battery life get a motorola razor or something. These phone are designed to run lots of apps all the time....of course the battery wont last you days....its not suppose to!

Thanks for the tip. I too have noticed similiar results. With the phone off I'll charge it until the LED is green, remove fromt he charger and turn it back on and it starts off at 100%. With use it'll s-l-o-w-l-y drop to 90%.

However, if I charge the phone while the phone is ON and remove it from the charger once the LED is green it starts off at 97% or 98% right from the get go and will drop into the 80 %s in just a few mins! Very odd indeed!

I think there are enough user reports to show there are some people not getting enough out of their batteries. Perhaps, the best approach is to tell HTC en masse.

I spoke to HTC and described my usage patterns, charging patterns, and battery life. The representative with whom I spoke (a guy named Shane, though that is obviously of no interest), said he did not think my battery performance sounded right. My performance is pretty much on par with what most people here claim to be getting. Basically, with normal use (making a few phone calls, check e-mail and txt, surf the web a little bit) I don't get through a day. The exact numbers and percentages aren't really relevant. What matters is a lot of us aren't getting through the day, and HTC thinks we should be able to.

He said that there are some batteries that don't charge right and that I had two options:

1. HTC would send me a new battery under warranty, or
2. Go to my carrier.

Well, I didn't want to wait for a new battery for a week, because I am in my 30-day trial. Verizon also had no batteries in stock.

I am waiting for my 1750, and I will see if that gets me where I want to be for battery life.

But, if you want to actually try to get some response on this, I think it is time to turn to the manufacturer. This is not an issue that we can work around. It's a smartphone, and disabling all the smart features shouldn't be necessary to get through the day. It's one thing to turn off bluetooth, wifi, and gps when not in use, but I'm not going to disengage from 3G.

We have learned that the final ~10% of a charge is turned down to a trickle charge, and takes much longer. However, it seems maybe this feature has a bug and actually turns off the charge on some phones. When you turn off the phone and continue charging, it must reset that safety. Same goes with when you unplug it and plug it back in. But this is just a guess.

The main reason for my post was for non-heavy email users who can refresh their Gmail manually. I don't need a real time refresh on it and the article points out email retrieval could be a culprit. I would like to have as much battery as possible for other apps such as Music and GPS. If the battery lasts me till the end of the day, I'm happy.

It could be the battery telling the phone it's full when it's not the case. My phone is now on 97% and still going after 2 1/2 hours with 3G a little web browsing and some text messaging.

I'm gonna bet HTC did this on purpose because the last 10% takes much longer to charge and they didn't want to give the impression that their phone takes way longer to fully charge than someone else not using LiPoly technology.

It was the first time I ever saw my battery at 100% and it said 100% for about a half an hour. I am now a happy man. I guess shouldn't have bought that extra battery.

so you had your phone off for all 3 of your charges including your overnight charge?

No my overnight charge was with the phone on. I then turned it off so that I could charge my battery faster while I was getting ready. But I kept having to do it over and over becasue It kept accepting more charging. I ended up being late to work this morning. :)

Actually GPS only seems to turn on when you're using Maps or an app that sets off the satellite icon. You can leave it on in settings. Android should be smart enough when to use or turn off the GPS chip and use A-GPS instead.

Same here... read the other post and tried it last night. Phone was on, charged until I got the green light. Then turned off phone while it was still plugged in and the phone displayed a yellow light. This morning, I noticed it did not drop down to 90% in a such a short time. It's been off the charger for about 2hrs and I'm still at 96%.

Would this be something that could be fixed by a patch or a new software version if HTC was aware of the issue?

I don't power off my phone when I charge but I'm noticing the same thing. If I take it off the charger and hit the road, it slips down to low 90's fairly quickly.

If I recharge again right away, it goes to 100% and stays there for quite awhile before draining and it happens much more slowly.

If this is true, then doesn't it suggest that those who have not done this do not have a properly calibrated battery meter on their phone?

You would need to do this and then drain to zero a couple times.

i'm gonna try this later, i thought my battery wa getting better but i hit a bump in the road today so any tip i can get helps. thanks

I would assume so, I stopped at recharging after 3 times becasue I had to go to work. wonder how many times I could have done this before the green lite would turn on when plugging it in. When I get home I going to see how many recharges it can take before it's actually full. Once that happens, I will discharge completely and recharge again to calibrate the battery properly.
