Battery level in 1% increments

Just as a side note....I have the circle battery widget, which reads in 1% increments on the X and it seems to be very accurate...have not tried these other ones... I have read that the circle batt is still reading 10% increments on the OG Droid....so somethin must be different on the x....

Yeah, when Toolanddiemaker gave me the heads-up re. Circle Battery Widget, I scanned the battery status directories for what might have changed from when I first wrote BattMonX and saw the 1% delta "charge_counter" file. I really believe that it was introduced in v2.2 (Froyo), but I'm a little surprised Moto didn't "fix" the capacity file (probably for backward-compatibility reasons I presume).

Cheers!

Andy,

Your app has closed the gap to only a 2% difference now...looks like it will sync-up in a few hours.

Cheers!

edit: lol, its bizarrely now at a 5% difference just a little while later...I'll keep an eye on it.

My app does it's own 1% changes, so I'm not surprised that there may be a few % difference every now and then, but as you know I'm keen to make it device independent, so if I can tweak it to be more in line with that counter file.. then it should work in the same way across all devices.

Ok, my battery monitor app now checks for the charge_counter file, it's got 1% changes for sure and seems to be accurate and in-line with the other widgets, the battery_changed event values (on the DX) seem to be rounded to the nearest 10%/5%, i.e. 90% = 85-94% in the charge counter file. Which makes sense as to why it would also jump up to 100% fully charged when it is in fact still at 95%+.

I'm going to test it for a while, and if it continues to work I'm hoping it means that version 4.7 of my app will be able to do 1% changes on all devices. For already accurate HTC's it's simple, and for motorola's that do not have the charge_counter file it will use my code-based "learning" calculation instead. Great Stuff.

I'm glad I joined this forum now, thanks.

lol...sorry that I just sent my email reply with the charge_counter info... Lost an hour of time due to the time change from last night .

Glad you got it hooked-up and happy to help!

Cheers!

Just published version 4.7 of my app: Battery Monitor

Added support for the charge counter file built into the Droid X as per our discussion above. I would appreciate any feedback from members on here.

In particular, if my application doesn't give 1% updates reliably over a reasonable time period on any device, I would like to know. It would be a great help, thank you.

:D

Andy,

App works great on my Moto Droid X and HTC Droid Eris. Thanks for a great app and I'll let you know how it works on my various co-workers' other types of phones (Epic, Captivate, Instinct, Evo).

Cheers!

Just downloaded it and is in sync with my circle widget.
Now you and Scary need to put donate versions up on the market. Make some gas money off this stuff. It may be just a hobby to you but it is a service to the android community.
Thanks for your efforts.

I may make a paid version with more features sometime in the future, it's only been on the market for a few months. Right now I just want to make sure the app is solid, bug free and also gets through gingerbread updates without any hitches.. I might think about it. Scary should too, his app is unique, and a great idea. Thanks for the support.

Out of interest, what device do you have ?

I have a Droid X. Have a rooted Eris I can try it on too. I can probably try it on an Evo, D2 and a Fascinate tomorrow.

And an Incredible on Wednesday. I only associate with other android types. Apple gives me hives. Lol

I've updated my app to Version 4.8 on the market. I still find it odd that the OS doesn't report the exact percentage as per the file, but, maybe that will change in a gingerbread update.

I use an app called Battery Monitor by SIMMO Publications. It shows in the notificaion bar.

I've been using this one for a couple days and I really like how it stays out of the way up in the notification bar. I also like how it shows 1% increments. One less thing to clutter my home screen.

Glad you like it, that's the reason I wrote it, to be out of the way in the notification bar. It's always visible no matter what screen you're on too, including the lock-screen. Of course I do have a biased opinion since I wrote it. :D

Please also note - my actual app announcement thread is here if you're interested: Battery Monitor

If you want to bug me about changes or problems, please let me know. Thanks.

lol, Andy! Your new version looks great! (I also like how you "have given into the charms of the charge_counter file on the DX" ;)).

Looks like the percentage charged is back in-sync with other reported apps.

I've also (finally ;)) released my new version 2.3 of BattMonX with several new features and options, principally displaying a status bar icon and the ability to turn off the LED notification behavior for phones without LED indicators, support for the 1% battery charging increments, and ability to set LED blink action for the monitor-by-percent charged.

Cheers!

Looks good Sean, the notification icons look great, good work. I thought about having colored ones too.. but, I guess I just like plain old text.

I just updated mine too (again). It's probably time for me to stop annoying people with constant updates for a while.

Thanks Andy, I appreciate that!

Yeah, the colored battery icons on the notification status bar are really a side-effect / bonus from my original LED-only monitoring. If someones doesn't like a particular color, they can just change the corresponding LED color choice for their selected monitoring mode (battery state vs. percent-charged).

I'm also thinking of trying to divorce my app from reliance on scanning for the battery state files like your does. It was just a side-consequence of the work that I did trying to support the LED being on while the screen was on (i.e., scanning for the LED's brightness files).

I'll grab your new version here in a sec to see what new goodies you put in. :)

Thanks and cheers!

Good luck, I had it working 'ish.. but the file is very attractive and reliable (especially for the DX), give in to the file, lol. The file wants you !!! Its winking at you. ;)

lol! ;) :D

Yeah, I mis-spoke a little...the "X" will still get the charge_counter love :p.

I just know there's some phones that have weird battery status directories (like the Samsung Instinct) because the directory paths contain colon characters and there are issues in searching the "ls -R" output (not all files are actually returned from such a search...very bizarre).

Your method of using the battery intents are probably a better way to go to get this information across a wider population of phones. My app started as an X-only thing and has had to morph from there ;) :D.

Cheers!

So all that talk that the X never had the drivers to deliver 1% stats was incorrect?

Also, can you explain the difference between Voltage Based system returned values and not?

Well, scary alien pointed out that it appeared possibly in the 2.2 update. But it kinda means that the DX was always capable, because it's been very reliable during my testing.
