I haven't pulled the trigger on getting the Evo yet but the moment is getting closer. I'm curious if when I do get mine should I do a full factory reset as the first thing after activation? Will it erase or affect any of the stock apps or widgets? I figure if it's helpful maybe I should do it before I put pictures or apps on it.

If you follow the link and read the article, it says:

"Please note that all data will be deleted from the HTC EVO 4G as a result of this procedure. This process does NOT delete data stored on the microSD card. We recommend backing up all of your personal data before proceeding."

If you follow the link and read the article, it says:

I guess my point was if it would be beneficial to reset right away or should I wait to see if I'm having problems first. The advantage of doing it right away is that I don't have any apps to re download but if there is no benefit then there is no point in doing it.

Why try to fix what is not broken? If you are not having any issues, then it is sort of a moot point, right?

I say if you start having issues give it a whirl. Like I said, I have a feeeling it was an OTA update that f'ed my phone.
One thing i found very useful was adding your contacts on your PC via Gmail... all my contacts reloaded instantly when I logged into gmail thru the phone.

But also causes no harm so why not.

I have google synced with contacts, but my phone contacts are not appearing on google when I go to the contacts page.

Any other way of doing it?

Edit: Can I just export to SD card then re-import them back in?

I ran a hard reset as soon as I left the store because the BB rep didn't let me put in my google account info before she canceled all the prompts (couldn't figure out which setting brought the prompts back until later...). Truth be told, they tried to install a bunch of crap and there were a bunch of errors occurring right when they turned the phone on.

It was probably better that I did the hard reset; I started with it the way HTC intended me to.

I wish somebody would sticky that article that explains the hard reset...I think that would fix a lot flakey issues some people are having. I've been advising that as the last resort before returning the phone on several threads now. It's fixed a number of peoples issues.

Hmm, I've had random restarts too. I might give this a try, even though I don't want to spend an hour or two adding all my contacts back in again lol

You don't have to. Android syncs all your contacts to Gmail. So once you restart, sign in with GoogleMail again... everything will be back again.

I wholeheartedly agree! ;)
I really almost returned my phone!

I am thinking of trying this for my phone issues. Call quality is horrible might a factory reset help that?

Well, assuming you aren't in an area that's got poor coverage, it might. I'd certainly try it...can't hurt.

What stock data/apps would you lose on a hard reset if it was new out of the box?

None that come with the phone, but as far as any personal settings/apps from the market, make sure that the "backup" is enabled, and your synching as well. Wait a few hours (24?...not sure how the google backup process works) and everything should be restored after the flashing process.

... I also turned off roaming, turn off GPS when not in use etc. which I believe helps with battery life...

Having GPS "enabled" should not tax the battery as opposed to when its actually "active"...which would depend on any apps/widgets which may require its use.

FWIW, colnago = 1.9L Rado G60 + 20thAE

;)
