Root Black Hat Question

Of course. But if the OS is written well, it should resist rebooting when an app is misbehaving. You can't stop everything, but the vast majority of apps should be able to crash gracefully without taking out the entire phone.

Certainly a fair question. I've got a good handle on what things will reasonably reduce reliability, and what things won't, so I wouldn't be objecting if I thought I was affecting system stability in some way.

In any event, I don't have any objection to the stability of my phone. I said the reboot irked me a bit, but I'm not calling Verizon about it or bagging on the phone because of it.

Sure. Things have come a long way, though. I don't see why currently-developed phones shouldn't be held up against the current state of computing. It's only 15ish years since Windows 3.11, but I'm not going to say, "well, it's better than things were."

Fair enough. And my last stablemen wasn't meant to say they shouldn't be held to the current standard but just an explanation as to why they don't bother me as much as they might other. (My current employer actually had a win3.11 box running as a server when I got there 8 years ago!) However if you're hacking and loading ROMs IMO its hard to blame the OS, at least the one Google made, since its been changed. We''re probably lucky they haven't gained access to the kernel or we'd have lots more rebooting I'm sure :D

.sbf take you back to 2.3.13 not 2.3.15 right?

Yeah, but at least I can get into my phone, right? Right now, I'm backing up 2.3.13 and will restore my original 2.3.15 OTA rooted (better radio).

I don't know if I want to deodex. Maybe, but I don't go for the fancy colors. I'm pretty plain. I liked the r2d2 but it just took so dang long to boot and swype wouldn't work with it. Meh.

I'm not really into themes either, but I deodexed so that I could use the black notification bar that I had in 2.1. Not only is it easier on the eyes, but it saves the screen too. If you use the stock white notification bar, it will affect the screen over time. After enough use, you might notice discoloration when using a fullscreen application or watching videos.

gonna d/l and install the 2.3.15 deodexed from black hat then. ty.

Thats why I'd like to see a TBH rooted deodexed OTA, not a pre released final version, but the actual version with the last minute bug fixes in it.

I'll buy rom manager as soon as they make that available, if nothing else, to make it easier to update my wife's phone.

I still haven't deodexed my DX, because all the deodex options aren't 1 click solutions.

they aren't one click but they are still pretty straight forward if you follow the directions

good point. sigh. I just don't want to get stuck needing my phone to reboot. I wonder what the differences are in boot times. Why is one version faster than another? Philosphical questions! ;)

What makes you think there are any last minute bug changes?
The version numbers are the same if there was any last minute bug fixes it would have a different number.

Why will that make it easier than how it is now?

Well mine boots in 30 once its past the M which is all bootloader stuff so it's not controller by the ROM so I don't count it. however with it it adds about 20 seconds.

How many times did you time this boot? They always take much longer the first time. I've also seen you've been asked a few times now but seen no response.*I may have missed it) How many times a day do you reboot your phone that an additional 30 seconds would be an issue? If the coolest ROM in the world came out and it took 90 seconds to boot would you not use it? I'm just curious as to why 30 seconds is so important to you.

I can't answer why one boots faster than the other because I don't see it. But from reading about deoxed it seems it may have something to do with it.

Well, I use my phone for business and in case there's a freeze and I need to pull the battery, I don't want to have to be stuck needing my phone and waiting for it.

I see your point though. Thank you.

well that leads me to this question.
How many times does it freeze? Because I'd be more concerned about that than the reboot time.

damn you got me. it never freezes! steven walks away muttering the guy is just like my wife!

I started getting pop ups and like WTF is that a virus?!

Steven watches his thread getting taken over. Eats popcorn.
