Root [Boost Mobile] Working ROMS/MODS/KERNELS/MODEMS/ECT for the Boost S3

I'm using MK3 with the 4.3 Wicked Sensations Beta ROM and definitely can see improved reception while staying with the 31104 prl.

You should give the MyHub app mods a try with MOAR too, Wy. Better yet, give the new 4.3 Wicked Sensations ROM a try.

Just a little information I learned and thought I'd share with the rest of you. The DKP kernels that come with the 4.3 Wicked Sensations and MOAR have init. All other DKP kernel builds do not have it. Decimalman let this be known in the 4.3 Wicked Sensations thread. If you are flashing builds directly from the DKP thread then they don't have init. Just thought I'd share this info since many members running the kernel thought it already had init support added.

I have also started using the paid version of Trickster and highly recommend it. Very nice app. ;)

I noticed that Decimalman posted Selective and Permissive Ram Disc Zips that can be flashed that I think add back the goodies like init support to the newer kernels not included with MOAR and Wicked.

I lost my init support when I flashed the newest kernel. I haven't flashed the RD yet, but plan to after a backup. Got some init scripts in Myhub today too.

Hello all. Good ole' St. Nick (my son) surprised me with an S3 for Christmas. I previously had a Prevail and Transform Ultra, both of which I rooted and put on roms, CT and Megatron, both were very simple. I had this phone for about 12 hrs. now and I am itching to root and rom this puppy. In About Phone it shows Android Version 4.1.2. Does this mean it is not knoxed? I read for a bit and saw knox was not good, so I am avoiding a system update. If not knoxed, should I just follow the root tutorial with philz recovery? I am assuming that that recovery is the same as cwm.
Also, what is the most used rom around here? Will I have to fix mms issues with all roms? I currently don't have 4G lte in my area, but if it ever comes I want this phone to be ready. Will I have to apply a fix for LTE? Do I have to apply a new kernal, Baseband, or do these roms take care of this? I will keep reading, but this phone seems to be more complicated than my last two. Thank you so much in helping me start this amazing journey.

I see you've been doing some reading! Nice to see that someone is keeping up to date on the DKP kernels and found the RAMDISC zips that Decimalman posted. :D

One of the members over at XDA brought up the init question and Decimalman confirmed that he had added init support to the stock DKP kernels that come with 4.3 Wicked Sensations and MOAR but his other kernels didn't have it. This was new information to me and I thought some of you guys might find it useful.

You are going to love the S3.

You are not Knoxed unless you take the OTA for 4.3
Don't do it.

Philz based upon CWM but better

You can root with any recovery on 4.1.2. I used TWRP.

The newer 4.3 and KitKat Roms seem to flash better with Philz.

This thread has the Roms. It is your preference which to try first but the TW are the easiest.

You have to flash baseband separate in recovery. The newer Roms want MK3.

Kernels are usually included with Roms but you can switch to others.

MMS and LTE has gotten easier I think, just read this thread first and backup your Apns.

You have a good handle on what to do. Just read and take your time and

Do it!

Welcome! Glad to have you. I remember you from the Prevail days. Those were fun times.

Welcome to the Boost S3 section! Nice to see a fellow member who came from the Prevail section. Wy and I along with several others in here learned about Android on that device.

It looks like Wy has pretty much answered your questions. If you have anything else or are unsure of what to do, ask 1st. Questions in here usually don't go very long without getting answered.

Most of the Sprint ROMs can be flashed on our phone. I suggest sticking with the TouchWiz ROMs at 1st. MOAR and Wicked Sensations are 2 of the most popular. If you decide you want to go with AOSP, CM11 is good to go. Dirty Unicorns is also a nice ROM but LTE cannot be used with it due to a bug in the ROM itself.

As for the recoveries, Philz is super nice. It's kind of like CWM on steroids. LOL! I'm using TWRP right now because that's what Wicked Sensations calls for in the flashing instructions. I have used Philz and it's awesome! It's just gonna boil down to what your preference is.

Again, welcome to the Boost S3 section! :)

Flashed the init.d script with vmin from myHub. This Sucker is running good. I went into Trickster and changed to the freelunch governor with zen. Let's see what happens tomorrow. Hehe! Got to get a couple hours sleep....

Lol! Those are the settings I am running. I'm still running the DKP kernel that comes with Wicked Sensations but will probably be updating to the newest build which means I'll need those scripts. I'll probably update it tomorrow.

Get some sleep Bro. Working on no sleep sux! :p:D

Wetbiker, I didn't see where it said to use twrp for flashing wicked sensations, I used philz and had no problems flashing it. I've only been running it for a day but I really like it. Is there a update out since yesterday?? If so, I can just dirty flash, can't I?

The version I am talking about is the 4.3 Beta Wicked Sensations. Unless Dazed has changed the flashing instructions recently, he says to use TWRP along with the MK3 modem. Those who didn't have that modem flashed were reporting no data. The only thing TWRP allows is for you to flash the mods directly from the MyHub app. You have to boot into the other recoveries and flash the mods after they've been downloaded. Other recoveries can be used bro. I just chose to use TWRP because that's what he recommended.

As for dirty flashing, I never do it anymore nor do I recommend it. I restore most of my apps minus data with Titanium Backup. I've had too many problems after dirty flashing so I just quit doing it.

Edit:

I just checked and he has rewritten the flashing instructions. The original stated to use TWRP. He still recommends using TWRP but also says he's tested it with Philz.

As I mentioned above, you can use other recoveries. I just chose TWRP because he recommended it and continue to use it since it allows me to flash the MyHub app mods directly from the app. I did use Philz with it when I ran the 4.1.2 builds though and it worked perfectly. I'm sure it works great with 4.3 Beta. I'm gonna continue using TWRP for right now though. :D

Hello again. I knew I was in good hands when I saw wetbiker7 and wyelkins actively posting. Very informative members. I'm still trying to get a grasp on my new, awesome S3 and rooting. My S3 has a MG2 modem and is 4.1.2. I noticed two different rooting guides, 1) rooting MK5 for newbies and 2) outdated guide by Austrie. Do I need to use the one by Austrie since I have a MG2 modem? Next, would I use philz touch recovery 6.0 posted by jdsingle76? That is as far as I have made it. I guess I want to be stock with root so I can get rid of most of the junk boost put on this wonderful phone. Thanks again for your time.

You can use the old guide by Austrie. Make sure that you read down some in that thread and you'll see where I updated some of the steps so that you'll end up flashing TWRP with Odin instead of CWM. I included the links needed in that post too.

Happy New Year!

Apparently one of the features of the MK3 update is that it disabled the PRL Write Option in the Dialer ##DATA# menu on Touchwiz Roms.

Bummer. I haven't used that word since 1978. I had a Boss who used it in the '90's Lol

But, there is a fix. Flash the zip for MK3 or various other modems and you can change your PRL again.

And, you don't even have to know your MSL!

The Strange thing about this to me is that you do it in View Mode. It does not appear on the menu in Update Mode...

I never worried too much about PRLs and I think that a lot of the Buzz about them is mostly Tower Work, Network Upgrades, Placebo Effect and Voodoo, But being a Libertarian type guy, I like to at least have the option to EASILY change mine without having to connect to a PC and run CDMA workshop, etc.

Anyway, this may be old news to you guys, but I see that the MK3 version was released on Christmas Day, so Happy New Year!

Thanks for all the info.. Can I substitute TWRP with philz? I have heard great things about TWRP, but I am comfortable using CWM and philz sounds like its very similar. Also, if I just obtain root at this point (using Austries guide with philzs) will I need to start looking at potential fixes (MMS, WiFi, etc...), or is that just after I flash a rom? One last question, ( I'm needy I know :-) ) since I am currently 4.1.2, can I go to 4.3 ROMs as long as I also flash the correct modem? Thanks for helping this old newbie.

I would go ahead and follow the old guide using the modified steps I added flashing TWRP , then flash the Philz recovery zip via TWRP. It's very easy to do. You'll flash Philz recovery in TWRP, reboot recovery and you'll have Philz.

The only time you'll need the MMS fix is when you flash a SPRINT ROM for the 1st time. You will also have the option to upgrade to one of the TouchWiz 4.3 ROMs. You can stay with rooted 4.3 stock minus Knox or you can go with one of the awesome Sprint ROMs like MOAR or Wicked Sensations.

DO NOT FLASH ANYTHING WITH KNOX.

Best advice possible! As a side note, MOAR just updated to 7.10 today, looks like it includes a cool feature to have an incoming call just notify on the bottom 25% of the screen and leave whatever app you were running intact, can't remember the credit but I think that part came from the Note 3.

Yep. I had read where he was going to get that added. Nice that he did. That may bring me back over to MOAR from WS. That's a bad ass feature! :D:thumbup:

For sure! MOAR has run slightly better for me than Wicked, but the theming and look of Wicked is absolutely amazing. Tested both ROM's on several modems, MK5 is actually still best for me, despite the advice to use MK3. I have found that MK3 is probably my least favorite modem on any ROM, whether it is AOSP or TW based, signal and data are nowhere near as consistent as MG2 or MK5. Again, those are my personal results, the currently popular "YMMV" will certainly apply!

Sorry, Combination Senior Moment and Google lazy syndrome, is MK5 the VM modem? Will it work on Boost? If so, where is it? Lol.

Might give it a try.

Nothing wrong with being old and afraid of technology like Google ha ha ha! Yes, MK5 is the newest modem for both VM and Boost (soon to be Sprint Freedom apparently!). Links for lots of modems in this reply of mine from several pages back:

http://androidforums.com/boost-mobile-galaxy-s3-all-things-root/772094-working-roms-mods-kernels-modems-ect-boost-s3-14.html#post6342194

Biker has all these on page 1 as well, I'm pretty sure, I just knew more quickly where to find what I had posted!

I actually downloaded most of the Sprint modems, I guess I just assumed that those would be better. But as the old song says

It ain't necessarily so.

Edit Update

Did MK3 speedtest. Flashed MK5. Did MK5 speedtest. Much better.

Also, 4G connected faster after boot and switched to 3g faster when it realized that my 4G currently sucks.

Too soon to draw conclusions but so far MK5 IS ALIVE!

I will give it a test with some Sho Nuff LTE tomorrow.

Thanks, Stuckn

Oh, and about that senior moment, I had downloaded MK5 last month. Time for that Alzheimer Test and some time to organize my downloads better.

Oh and about that senior moment (deja vu), I just forgot to attach my before and after speedtest. The top one is from MK5. While I was in Philz I did a backup and some chores, hence the time gap. Not bad.

I am currently running wicked sensations rom and I love it so far. I have tried to send 2 different text messages and its saying failed. Also, one of those messages was quite long and it wouldn't let me continue, its like it only allows so many characters, thats it?? I have no problems with wifi or data, that works perfectly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Go into your phone settings and update your profile. Reboot and try sending after you have given the phone time to boot up fully. Texting should be working perfectly.

Also, Sprint only allows so many characters to be sent via SMS. It will break the message into separate messages. There is also a setting in some messaging apps to convert to MMS if the character limit goes over its limit.

You can always use a messaging app from Play too. I use the donate version of Chompsms. You have to go Into the stock app and disable the notification or you will receive dual notifications.
