Can anyone install Gingerbread ROM on my Droid?

^ lol yea i know i can, i just dont feel comfortable rooting and would prefer someone who has done it before to do it
 
with the moto droid its impossible to fully brick it. My laptop started a system update in the middle of flashing an SBF (supposed to be a big no-no to unplug your phone during this) and nothing happened I just restarted from the begining.

This. I was so freaking scared shitless when I first started doing it. I was so amazed at how easy it was. Just follow the step by step instructions and nothing will go wrong. If something does go wrong, read the step by step instructions on fixing it :)
 
Well I replied to you in Pete's Gingerbread ROM thread too. I'm 45 mins north of NYC if you want meet up somewhere to help out. But as others have said.. it's really not a big deal. Just research it a little and take the plunge. I did about this time last year and that's before RSD Lite was used and everything was done through the SDK/command prompt, lol. Now you have one-click root apps and can pretty much do it without even needing a PC.

ok i read up on the one-click root program, but my question is, how do i get it to root the ROM that i want? (Peter Alfonsos gingerbread ROM)

Once you get root you will not have to re-root your custom ROM. They are all rooted ROMs. Just download ROM Manager, flash a recovery, MAKE A BACKUP :) then flash your ROM and enjoy. If you have any issues there is always someone here that can help you.

I would go to the market and download ROM Manager premium (its worth the money over the free one). You can flash Clockwork Mod Recovery from the app itself then make a backup of your current ROM after flashing your recovery. After that choose the Rom you want from ROM manager (research before choosing) then ROM Manager will download and install it automatically.

For a ROM not in ROM manager you need to flash it through the recovery interface off of your sd card. This is a brief summary of what you need to do. I would read up on it in the All thing root-Droid forum.

Ah, so unplugging during an SBF also doesn't brick? I knew it! I was discussing this with someone who claims that SBFs overwrite the bootloader and therefore that is one way you can brick it, but I just didn't think it could be true. Why would an SBF contain a bootloader entry?
 
After you're rooted:

1. Download ROM manager in the market.
2. Open ROM manager and select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" at the very top.
3. Download Pete's GB ROM.
4. Open ROM manager again and select "Install ROM from SD Card" and browse to wherever you saved the above linked file on your SD card.
5. Make sure you have both check boxes checked to "Backup Existing ROM" and "Wipe Data and Cache"

Then watch it shut down your phone, boot into the recovery, wipe your phone (not the SD card) and then install the new phone.

Make sure you backup whatever settings/apps you can before you install this so it'll be easier to restore everything once you get it installed.

If you don't like the ROM, something goes wrong or for whatever reason just want to restore your phone (exactly) the way it was before. Just download ROM manager again and go to "manage and restore backups" and select the backup it made before it flashed that GB ROM.
 
yup i was under the impression it would brick it too, so when I noticed my PC rebooting i almost died but then I restarted the sbf process and it was fine
 
^ wow thanks a lot. im going to look into downloading ROM manager from the market. I guess ill just choose one of the ROMs that the app provides, because im not too sure how to do it with a ROM not in there.

So all I would really need to do is download the ROM manager, flash the clockwork mod recovery, then choose the ROM i want to install?

where should i save peter alfonsos ROM? just anywhere onmy sd card?
 
If you want Bugless Beast, then download it to the PC and then move it to the root of your SD card via USB cable.

After you've rooted (easy)
Downloaded ROM Manager (easy)
Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, scroll down and flash Alternate Recovery (SPRecovery) and THEN flash ClockworkMod Recovery again (easy)
Backup Current ROM in ROM Manager (easy)

Then power off the Droid, reboot into Recovery using x+power (easy)
Wipe data THREE TIMES - I know, some will debate that - and install ROM from SD card (easy)

Choose the Bugless Beast ROM you put on the card and let it do its thing (easy)

When it says "installation complete", reboot the phone and let the first boot take about 5 minutes. (easy)

When it powers up, sign into Google and you've got a stock, vanilla Android device ready to customize as you please! Easy! :)

I just told you how to install a ROM not listed inside the ROM manager app (which Pete's GB ROM isn't listed in right now). Just click on that download link I gave you from your phone. Then install it from your SD card just like I said in my instructions. :)

Edit: Opps, just saw your edit, heh. Yeah, doesn't matter where on the SD card. Just as long as you remember where to browse to it when you install it from ROM manager.
 
trying to do the root with one-click root, and its just stuck on the
souproot\android-sdk-windows\tools
screen
 
question, i got it to root, downloaded ROM manager and backing up now
do i need to have USB debugging on, and do i still need it hooked up to my PC?

now theres a triangle with an exclamation point and a picture of the droid, nothings happening, im scared!
 
That's the stock recovery, you're OKAY!

Boot up normally, unplug it if you have a good charge on it (at least 80%), and proceed to the ROM Manager step where you flash the new recovery image.

You're doing great :)

What do you mean boot up normally? Should i just wait with the stock recovery or should i do something?

I already went to the ROM manager step, and clicked wipe cache data and back up exisiting rom. I clicked the rom that i wanted, it was a .zip file, and now its just on the screen with the exclamation point in the triangle with the droid next to it

That's because you skipped the ClockworkMod part. It's VERY important, as the stock recovery won't let you install a custom ROM. You need that recovery image before you can flash anything.
