Root Can we be objective about our phones?

Happy 5th of July all:

Was wondering if it is possible to be objective about our phones?

I can say for sure that I WANT to really love my Evo but without using someone else's Evo how can I ever know about the quality of the call or the responsiveness of the functions?

Someone recently talked about the EVO 4G not being a very good phone. I've heard others say that the EVO 4G is the best smartphone on the market. Is it possible that the phone that one person has works a lot differently than the one that another person has even with the same rom and kernel and memory? Let's not take into consideration the way people treat their phone. Wear and tear has a huge effect on the way a phone works over time. My GF and I got a two-fer deal a few years back and in less than 6 months her phone looked like it had been through the war and mine looked like it was never used.

But my evo sounds terrible: the ear speaker rattles like a piece of torn cellophane. From time to time it takes far too long for an app to load. It also seems like ambient noise is annoying to everyone I talk to. People I am talking to always ask me what I am doing or "what that noise? Moving paper while talking on the phone always bothers people and driving with a window open means I can not have a conversation at all. Is this MY phone, THE phone, or the nature of smart phones?

Why is it critically important not to allow the battery to run down til the phone turns off?

If there is any truth to the story that using the phone/apps while it is charging somehow deteriorates the ability of the battery to hold a charge; why isn't it so well known that it comes as a warning with the phone and or charger?

My phone takes so long to boot since turning off "quick boot" that for emergencies you could bleed to death before it's ready to use.

At the least it sounds like I need a new ear piece speaker and main speaker and perhaps a new mic. I tried using a bluetooth ear-piece and that too produces poor quality on my EVO. The same earpiece works fine on an old LG phone that I had before the EVO.

No warranty to that's not an option. But it would be nice to have it checked out with test equipment.

Thanks for your feedback.

I, personally, do not have any of those problems you mentioned, so, I think YOUR phone has hardware issues, as Rx stated above.

I remember you talking about getting it from some guy who had to take it apart and stuff, didn't you?

If anyone said the Evo is the best phone on the market now, they were talking about the lte. The og Evo is way too old at this point to claim that title but it has certainly been a great phone for me over the last couple of years.

I agree with the hardware issues. Our EVO's may not be the latest and the highest end today, But it still beats a lot of new phones that comes out. With the proper ROM, Kernel and apps. EVO can still keep up with our needs plus more :)

I bought a friends EVO which I think she had it 2 - 3 months after the launch so that's like almost 2 years old I guess.. :D and it still gives me a brand new feel. I never had a phone which can be fully customized to my liking. If you have a chance to have it repaired, Give it a shot.

Also, this forum has all the guides you need, and the people here are great:p

yeah i agree. i have the evo 3d now (will be getting the evo lte soon) and i think that the devs are so awesome that they have truly figured out how to unleash the beast that is within the og evo. i really miss my evo a lot. i loved (still) my evo. been tru a lot with my evo. the crazy thing is i think that the dev community will never equal to what it out there still for the evo compared to other phones.

i never had any major issues other the user error (almost bricked my phone installing a new recovery).

Since you mentioned that, In around 2 months or so.. I will be getting an HTC EVO 3D. A friend is getting an upgrade so I plan on buying it. EVO 4G LTE is out of my plans currently because I will be outside the US for a while and LTE is not available on the place I will be staying.

I will still us my EVO 4G primarily to contact my parents in the US (Skype) and the EVO 3D to use there locally. I really love the EVO models now lol :D

The EVO was hands down the best smartphone on the market when it was released.

Yes, every phone will react different to each ROM/KERNEL/Modification.

It also sounds to me like you have some hardware issues.

Seems that others here think as you do that my phone has hardware issues. That's why I mentioned having it checked out.

As someone else pointed out here this forum is full of great people, smart and willing to help walk others through procedures to fix and or customize there EVO.
Many of the members who responded to this post have been those who have helped and for that I can not give enough kudos.

So if you or anyone else here have some suggestions to do a few self checks that would be much appreciated.:)

Yep Dust, I purchased the phone from a Boost store. The guy made the whole deal seem like it was hush hush.

The phone worked better after installing the new ROM but now it's slowed up and I still have not properly resolved that memory issue. I got a new class 10 16 gig card but need to go back and re-read the procedure for installing it.

I'm also getting a notice when I boot the phone after charging it:

"#Superuser may be malicious" No idea what to do with the message? Run the virus scan? Delete the program?

Yep, you're right. Great people, great help!

What about re-flashing the rom or perhaps another rom. Just wipe all except sd card 3 times. Or, in recovery, wipe cache and dalvik cache.
Are you on boost now?

Edit: as far as your speakers/microphone, that may be hardware related and the store should be able to replace at least the speaker

Was it an official Boost store or some 3rd party merchant? The EVO 4G is not available officially from Boost so that is why it was "hush hush". (My EVO 4G is flashed to Boost)

This phone was like any other phone in that it had defective units sold. There were big issues with the USB charging port and the charger itself. Also, people complained about the video camera issue and the screen cracking. It wasn't a perfect phone. However, it could still probably sell well today because it can still be a good phone, at least better than some of the lower end models. I have had no issues with mine and my wife's only had issues because it was dropped carelessly (by me, the USB charging port broke because of the drop).

Quick note on the class 10 card, it's not really necessary to get one that high. I think a class 4 or class 6 works fine on the EVO 4G

So, anyone can be objective about the phone but in this forum, most will say they love it because it has lasted over 2 years, which is an eternity. I'm sure you could go to a Sprint forum and see all the unhappy customers there. :D

the class 10 card we were suggesting was dirt cheap and we were kind of hoping we could help him partition it and flash a rom that supported a2sd to help with memory issues his phone was having.

On a side note, I am using one in my LTEvo now, as well. When I do send something to the external sd card, it gets written a lot quicker, and that is good! :)

Regarding the phone, it is older now. I am not sure it was in the best of shape to begin with either. But, my personal 4g, yeah, it is still in good shape and works fine.

Regarding where you go from here, Kryp, when you feel up to it, what I think you would want to do is to make a backup of your sd card to your pc, make sure your contacts are synced to google and not just to your phone. Back up any text messages, etc as well. Use something like Titanium Backup to backup your apps and data but nothing in red, which are system apps.

Then i would follow the Guide we keep telling you about and use it to format and partition the card, put a new rom on it or even the same one, if it supports a2sd. I would suggest the full version of Mikg 3.1 or 3.11, or whatever it is now.

I would flash the rom fresh and then put the stuff I was interested in back onto the sd card. Titanium for one thing. Then use titanium to restore the apps and watch and see in the titanium app how stuff is going to the ext partition. By the way, you don't need much more than a gig of ext 3 partition, unless you are really an app hound, you won't fill up much of that! The rom should put what it can onto the partition automatically, or at worst, we would have to issue some commands to get the apps to move.

I would no longer look at how the rom itself is reporting the memory and I would not use the built in feature the rom has to move apps to the sd card. It will mess things up.

We have told you this stuff before, Kryp, this is just a refresher. we are here for you buddy, someone usually is, anyway, we'll help you all we can, just ask!

Regarding that message, if you do get and flash a fresh rom, it will have a version of SU that will be good, or that will update and be good. sounds like you have some antivirus either hitting on it falsely or maybe you DID pick up a nasty.

Yes, still on Boost.

Funny about the Sprint moaners.:D

I sometimes think of my EVO like a beautiful girl that agree's to go out with you then she quickly becomes a pain in the ass.
My complaints are minor but considering what I paid for her it bugs me that I'm always coming here to find out if it is me or the phone.
I bought her an otter coat so the compel times that she fell she doesn't have a scratch ( except once when I took the otter off to wash it and that little time the coat was off I got a small scratch on the screen that only I can see and know is there.
The other thing may be a boost problem: tons of dropped calls. They quietly drop in the middle of me yakking. I get a message that an error occurred and it asks me if I want to "dismiss" the call? It's already dropped. What other choice is there?
And the last thing is that horrible ear/speaker that rattles like it's got tin foil over it.

PS It was an " Official Boost Store " the guy was permanently connected to ebay and purchased a few EVO's a week. some just for spare parts. Funny thing, yesterday I was using an app that I never used before and it took me to a place where there were two folders: one folder had every picture I ever took with my EVO. There was another folder with one picture in it. I remember him taking the picture when my phone was on his desk a day or two after I purchased it and discovered that the SD card was only 4 GB and questioned and complained about the battery life.
He opened a drawer where there were a half dozen or so micro sd cards just floating around the drawer along with a ton of miscellaneous parts, covers, customized covers, batteries, etc etc. He picked up a few cards until he found an 8 gig, swapped it out with the 4 and said " That's the way he got it " He pulled the battery out and gave it a visual inspection then placed it on the desk that I now have a picture of. He flicked the battery with a finger and it spun around like a top. He then declared that the battery was toast. He took the battery out of his personal phone, and swapped it out with mine. It made me wonder why he would install a bad battery in his phone and how old/good was the one he gave me?
I found out later that he had " a relationship " with someone at the sprint store and he got them to trade him a new battery for my spinner battery.
Could write a story about this character!

Do you know if there are some clear explanations about this boost evo relationship? Maybe there are no official rules except Sprint wants people to believe that they shouldn't use an evo on Boost.

Hey Dust, I'm splitting up my reply: some of the reply before your post, some after it. Maybe I should try a change in font or color. Let's see how it looks.
If this color thing is not offensive I'll try it again.
In any event I want to say that I'm watching myself lose my senses...eye sight loss is pretty scary. But losing my memory seems to be even more scary. Sounding like Katerine Hepburn when I talk is annoying too. But not remembering things has to be the scariest thing of all. I'm writing now but I already forgot what you said so I keep scrolling back to reply item by item. Thanks to everyone here for taking the time to repeat the answers if I happen to ask the same question a few times.

Reading back I see that I said I ordered the card and charger that someone here suggested. Turns out I really did order it. Amazon says it was delivered. Now I'm looking for it and in the process I am finding a lot of things I should know about but don't. It really sucks!
:(

If I received the package it is laying somewhere around my house. I must have remembered some part about the class 10 card and what constitutes "cheap" While looking for a cheap desktop for a friend of mine who is worse off than I am with his health so I offered to find him a new computer. In any event I must have thought that the sandisk class 10's were a good deal because I purchased them all. I just found the bag a couple of days ago. It was unopened and it only had 3 class 10 16 GB cards in the bag. So with those three and the one from amazon, I have a choice HA~!
Someone somewhere told me that " You don't need a class ten " If that is true so what as long as it doesn't work against me.

Do you know if there are some clear explanations about this boost evo relationship? Maybe there are no official rules except Sprint wants people to believe that they shouldn't use an evo on Boost.

Sprint wants their customers contractually obligated because if you break a contract, they still make money. In order to do that, they offer the best phones with a 2-year obligation and offer the less popular ones to their prepaid companies Boost and Virgin.

Despite the age of the Evo 4g, it's still quite popular and many like it so much -- including me -- that they bypassed the upgrade and kept it longer. When it was discovered that the Evo 4g could be flashed to Boost, it was just another good reason to hold onto it. And with a properly flashed Evo, you pay about half of what you were paying with Sprint while still getting unlimited everything without the hassle of a contract.

Unfortunately, the hassle can sometimes be having the phone flashed to Boost by amateurs or people who just don't know what they're doing. They end up with a phone that can't use mms or text messages act erratically, aren't received, or don't come through. But if you're lucky enough to get your phone flashed by someone who really knows that they're doing, it can be the best $50 per month savings you can have.

I'm sure if Sprint could find a way to prevent the Evo from being flashed to Boost, they would. Thankfully, there's been no such luck. :)

Sounds like the guy was doing this on the DL. Officially, Boost will tell you they can NOT flash Boost to an EVO. I called 2 Boost stores in my area and they were adamant it cannot be done. Another one said you would have to do it on your own and they can't do it. Others remained quiet when i told them people have done it. YMMV
