Root [CDMA] Help with rooting Evo 3d on ICS!!!

srs bsns

Newbie
So I'm wanting to root my evo3d which is running the official version of ICS. I couldn't find anything guides on how to do this. I understand you have to unlock the bootloader but then the only thing I could find was to download an app called 4ext recovery but I'm uncertain as to what to do next, I looked at the complete newbie's guide to rooting but it doesn't really walk you through it step by step and seem to assume you know a lot of things...or maybe I'm just an idiot :( I want to keep the stock ics rom and just want to root so I can remove bloatware, I've rooted an evo4g a long time ago but I'm still fairly unfamiliar with the process. Can anybody help me out?

I followed the complete Newbie's Guide for my first ever root and thought it was very thorough. I will gladly try to to explain further if needed. I'm a little confused by your post. Doesn't the guide tell you to flash twrp recovery? 4EXT is an optional download after you've done everything else in the guide.

So where are you now? Is your bootloader unlocked? If you do a battery pull then hold volume down +power button does it say unlocked at the top? This is the first step. If you have accomplished this we can move on. If not we will have to get you there.

I haven't unlocked the bootloader because i'm unsure of what to do next after I do it, does it even matter if i'm running ICS? When reading the guide I have no idea whether to start at step 1 or to move on to step 4 where it unlocks the bootloader.

What is a minisdk?

What if I don't want to install any roms and keep the stock one? Do I skip step 2 completely?

Do I even need to do step 3 or is that taken care of when using the htc bootloader unlock?

I'm not sure you can run commands on osx like you can windows...so how would I enter the "adb bootloader prompts" or "fastboot flash recovery"?

Thanks for replying, sorry if some of my questions didn't make any sense, I consider myself fairly tech savvy but this is going way over my head haha

Edit: For further clarification, I disregarded the newbies guide to rooting because it seemed to be pre-ICS, I found some thread that gave instructions on how to root with ICS and it was like a three step process that went

1, unlock bootloader
2, install 4ext and use that to unlock superusersu or something along those lines..
3, install another program and you should be rooted.

It seemed far too simple so I was very skeptical...

You have to follow every step in order for it to work. I'm on my phone so it's hard to get super detailed. The guide was for pre ics but it will work the same. It has been updated where needed to work with ics.

Download sdk mini because it's small and has what you need and is compatible with osx. I have no experience using osx so I will be unable to answer some specific questions. For example opening command prompt. I will help where I can and you will probably have to fill in some blanks for osx...

Also that simple guide you saw was probably for someone who's phone was s-off or have already been rooted.

Htc sync.... You need the drivers... Not sure if they have an osx version or if you even need htc sync for osx. I'll have to look. But start there while I'm looking. Download all your files.

If you want to be stock rooted we will use a superuser patch. I prefer supersu but it doesn't matter really.

Get sdk mini from step one and get team win recovery from step two. I'm going to look at htc sync.

How long will this process take? I'm at work on a windows computer and if it's under 45 minutes I can just do it on this computer? Also thank you very much for you help it's extremely appreciated!

Well I'm a little busy atm so I can't guarantee a quick response always. Plus I'm on my phone so slower too.

We can try to get it done... We can at least do some. Let's at least unlock the bootloader since you have windows right now. So download htc sync and sdk mini. Extract the sdk mini directly to c: drive. Follow instructions to the letter to simplify.

I think it's highly unlikely. This method is from the phone manufacturer itself. Even if you mess up you can almost always recover. I think it's near impossible to permamently brick your phone unless you're flashing incorrect radios and stuff. It's scary first time I know but just stay calm and ask if you have a question. I'll keep checking in. If you're unsure or nervous before a step just ask and I'll be here to help.

Thank you very much, it's nice to experience a forum where people aren't dicks and are actually helpful! I gotta leave work so I'm gonna try it on my mac and hope it all goes well

Eek good luck. I'll be checking in and help as much as I can.
Osx will be a new experience for me so bear that in mind.

I'm happy to help. I got great help here and love returning the favor. If we get stuck we can call in a pro. We'll probably be able to make it through though. It's crazy you have an evo 3d and an apple computer :p.

Let fumble through this though!

We are keeping our eyes open, ;)

That was borderline creepy! :D

Okay so i'm totally lost on step two, it says to install Teamwin recover, stock deodex rom and then superuser SU, do I download all three and can I download them to any file?

http://teamw.in/project/twrp/67 there's like 4000 different links...which one do I download? the .img file?

TeamWin Projects - TeamWin Recovery Project (twrp) | TeamWin there's like 4000 different links...which one do I download? the .img file?

Ok. Yes download twrp. That will be your recovery which allows you to flash roms etc. Since you want to stay stock you can just download the superuser patch. This is what will root your software and allow you to grant apps superuser permissions.

that file doesn't run on a mac haha So do I skip the stock deodex rom?

Well this is the recovery not a rom. And you can't run it. You have to use command prompt to flash it to the phone but only after bootloader is unlocked. The first two steps basically contain the files you need to download. Your bootloader has to be unlocked before you flash that recovery.

The superuser or supersu patch happens after you have a custom recovery. But after you have the twrp successfully flashed to your phone the su patch basically replaces a rom. You could have a custom rom that isn't anything like stock. Or...... A stock rom. A stock rom is basically like taking the ota update. It's completely stock minus the fact that it has superuser access. If you are already stock and flash a superuser patch it is essentially the same thing as flashing a stock ROM. You are rooting it yourself giving superuser access.

Okay so...what is the SU patch? Can I just use that instead of the stock deodex rom thing?

Sorry I did not fully answer your question. Yes you use that in place of the stock rom. Per my post above you can see it's basically the same thing.
