Root [CDMA] Help with rooting Evo 3d on ICS!!!

Okay so now i'm using a buddys computer with windows because I don't think you can use that guide for osx. So I followed the steps up to step 3 where it says to run cmd and I follow the steps but after I type in cd C:\sdk-tools and then enter then fastboot this message comes up " 'fastboot' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.".....wahhhh help haha

Nice. Good job figuring that out. Do not unzip the rom. It won't know what to do that way. Your phone loves nice zipped up files.

So you unlocked your bootloader? Did you get the recovery flashed? You need the recovery to flash a rom or superuser. So where are you at now?!

So i'm stuck on step 3 of the guide. I'm not sure if you're still on a cell phone so i'll copy past it

"Now, click Start and either open Run, or click in the text box in your start menu. Then type 'cmd'. You get a command prompt. Now we need to go to the Mini SDK folder. If you installed it in the same directory I did, you can copy (or type):

Code:
cd C:\sdk-tools
Now go back into your command prompt and right click on it. Click paste and then push enter. You should now be in the mini SDK directory. If you have Windows 7, you can go to your mini SDK folder and right click on the folder and click "Open command window here" as an alternative means than copying and pasting (thanks to mteezey for the tip). To check that you are in the right folder, you can type 'fastboot' then enter, you should get this:"

the part that I get stuck on is when I type in cd "C:\sdk-tools" and then press enter and then type fastboot it gives me 'fastboot' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. But the guide says it should give me a long code. So i'm stuck on that part haha

lol sorry for being confusing, when I bring up the command prompt like it says to do in the guide, and follow all of the directions EXACTLY... instead of giving me the code like it says it should, it gives me an error message that reads 'fastboot' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. So i'm not able to get the code to move forward, if you look at step 3 in the guide it should make more sense.

I am going to step in quickly to get you back on track, SRS, you seem to be going in different directions, you need not get ahead of yourself and follow the advice of the guide and James, he had you going in the proper direction, but you seem to be trying to get ahead. You need to take a step back, take a deep breath, and read the guide one more time and follow it to a T and you will be fine. You can also check James thread when he first rooted his phone, you will see the process and steps, I always tell the members to read a few threads first to understand the process, now each phone is different, but it is good to read, then you make a list questions and ask, then you dive in when you know exactly what to do, sometimes when your in the middle of a process and go in different direction and then start asking your questions, it is hard to get back on track, my advice to you is to start back from the beginning and make yourself a game plan. ;)

I will also make one recommendation, I would use 4EXT recovery over TWRP, you will have less issues, but if you choose to stay with TWRP, make sure you use the upgraded version. Most are not using the upgraded version and thus having issues.

Ok so if you changed computers did you download htc sync and sdk mini on the new computer? Any computer you use will need both of these things. I agree you are getting ahead of yourself. :p

If you are on step 3 you should be doing nothing with a recovery or Rom yet. The bootloader isn't even unlocked. Let see if we can get sorted out. I'll be lurking til you get back. Then we can figure out exactly where you are and work through the steps.

Haha you're completely right I need to slow down, I haven't used windows in years so I'm still getting used to it. If I want to use 4EXT(which I do) Do I download it using your link and just substitute it in place of TWRP? It's also an app in the app store...would downloading it from there have the same effect?

Yes I followed the directions EXACTLY how they were written (hopefully), I think I'm just going to delete everything and start over completely.

I don't think you need to delete everything. We can figure this out.

So you have downloaded and installed htc sync. Does your computer recognize your phone when plugged in?

You have sdk mini extracted to C:/

Did you copy and paste the text rather than typing it. To make sure it is exact?

cd C:\sdk-tools
Also you aren't typing the "quotation marks" are you?

What else have you done?

The problem is most likely that you didn't extract the sdk-tools in the exact same location as the guide. It's not a problem really but to make it easier on everyone let's get it in the right location.

Do me a favor. Navigate on the computer to the location of your sdk-tools folder. go into that folder and copy the location from the top menu bar and paste in a comment here so I can see the exact location.

When I open my sdk-tools folder the address bar at the top says this:

C:\sdk-tools

So I'm on my work computer now, I've installed htc sync and mini sdk. So now i'm on step 2. I downloaded 4ext from Donb's link and it's a .apk file, will this be an issue since the guide is written for twrp?

Yes I put it in C:\sdk-tools and I copy pasted it to be sure. It won't let me copy the address bar at the top but it shows Computer>default C:> sdk-tools

EDIT: C:\sdk-tools - figured out how to copy :D

I meant to say something about that. I was going to follow the guide to make this easier. I personally use 4 ext. I can't find the 4ext file that you could use with this tutorial.

I will get a link to the twrp one he told you to use. After you are all done and rooted you can install 4ext recovery if you want but it's an optional thing.

So the link to the twrp in the guide is out of date and I shouldn't use it?

It should still work. just use the one in the tutorial. I can't find .img files for either one Don suggested. If for some reason it doesn't work we will find another one for you to use. It should be fine though.

Make sure it's in your sdk-tools folder named recovery.img

Okay i'll use that one. Can I also use the superusersu instead of the ROM? I don't think my IT department will like me downloading a 400mb file from an unknown source haha once again I want to keep the stock rom.

Use this SUPERSU PATCH

I know it works with ICS i've used it myself.
This should be your last download. This superSU patch will be used instead of a rom. so basically you will follow the exact instructions for flashing the rom (WHEN WE GET TO THAT POINT!!!! :p) but you will just use this file instead.

OKay so i've renamed the file recovery.img and moved it into my sdk-tools folder. I think i'm ready to move on!!!! :D And okay sounds good!

Super su isn't a rom. Look at it as your phones assistant. When you want to use an app which requires root. The phone looks to super su to get root permission to use said app. You need either superuser or supersu. Like James I like supersu. :)

Since you want to keep your stock rom you shouldn't have to download any roms at all. You will just be adding supersu to your existing setup.

P. S. It's very scary rooting the first time but like the cool people here told you just take your time. Make sure you read up. And you'll be rooted in no time.
