Root [CDMA] Looking for JB ROM Recommendation

Alright, so:
1. Root with SU Patch via/RootGuide
2. Gain S-Off via/RootGuide
3. Flash HBoot 1.5 via/BrianGuide
4. Flash Custom JB Rom via/RootGuide

Correct?

BTW, I was pretty confident about everything until I started reading about this "wire-trick" thing lol... Wow...

Hey Army,
If I can do it.... :-)
But I hear you, and was in same boat. These guys are great and will help in any way possible. But I'm living proof it's just about ID10T proof!

So where are you at with this ArmyX ?? Have you attempted this yet ??

In truth? Do you guys really want to know?

I talked to my Wife & told her I was going to do this and when I got to the wire trick part she said, "I don't think you should be MacGyver'ing your phone until you have a new one." ... Now, I love my phone... but I love & respect my Wife far, far more lol

So maybe next year once I get a shiny new Nexus 4 (or Nexus 5?) I will do this... My Evo3D is my only phone & if I miss this up, if there is any chance I will brick my phone at any point, I don't have the money for a new one until next year.

No chance of bricking with us here, but you know best, NP cheers, thanks for the update ;)

I haven't heard of a bricked 3vo (thought I had one at first) but was eventually recoverable.

Since this technically is a root thread, i'll post my need helps here instead :p

Been wracking my brain for the past week attempting to get my 3vo rerooted (finally will get my lcd and Digitizer replaced tomorrow)

Snag I'm running into now is re-unlocking. Going through same process as when I rooted the first time.

Lost my unlock_code.bin file so went through htc dev all over again, no problem get the file back on pc to flash.

Now once I begin to flash the unlock, is gets stuck at "sending.....", even after 20 minutes still stuck there.

Any ideas for me?

PS: going by jer's guide, no access to the ruu for ones that have trouble unlocking since it isn't available anymore.

Did you s-off? Or have you not done that yet? If so, scotty just made a flashable zip that will unlock the bootloader. I'm no sure why it's not unlocking. So it's not prompting you on the phone screen once you send the unlock code?

Right I never got to going s off before had all that trouble.

Just sits there at sending, doesn't prompt me on phone if I'm sure that I want to unlock the bootloader.

Does "downgrading" in this context mean rolling back the Hboot to an earlier version? I'm just about to get a very good condition used Evo 3D to replace my aging HTC HeroC and seeing that things are a little different now. On the HTC Hero, I didn't need S-OFF to apply quite a number of ROM's but I eventually did it anyway so that I could get TWRP on it. I have no hesitation switching to S-OFF on the Evo 3D, but I'd like to be sure I get on the "right" documentation.

Correct, to downgrade you'll need to be s off (not the brick method).

Being s off allows you to flash between Hboots 1.04 eng (I think that's what it is), 1.50 and 1.58 when needed, which mainly is for switching between different roms that require a certain hboot.

S off is definitely recommended if you intend to be a flash-a-holic or hell, it's recommended in general, no good reason not to. :)

I had read that some custom ROMs will install with S-ON, but others require S-OFF. However, 4EXT recovery boasts being able to install ROMs that require S-OFF... does that mean any of them, or is there just a subset? Does 4EXT act as a proxy to make it look like the phone is S-OFF to the ROM?

I do plan on going to S-OFF at some point... and will probably do the wire trick. Double bricking my phone to do it the alternate way just feels risky.

4EXT has a setting called smart flash for S-ON users. S-ON folks trying to flash without turning smart flash on have had troubles. Due to my semi-IT background, I'm hesitant to call it a proxy, but for this purpose, it does seem to act as a proxy for S-OFF.

As far as bricking your phone, if you can get to the splash screen, you can recover to at least flash an RUU. (Been done, done that, etc).

Here's a little explanation of smart flash:
