sorry,not sure what else we could try :(

the only solution ive seen is running an ruu. without an ruu for your build,youd have to be s off to run an older one. cant s off without unlocking,cant unlock without an ruu :eek:

another user was able to get temp root,change his main version,and then downgrade by bricking his device and "restoring" it to an older hboot using linux tools. this process is not for the faint of heart,and can easily leave the device permantly bricked.

you could always sell this device to someone who doesnt care about rooting,and then pick yourself up anotehr one that hopefully will work correctly.

that situation worked becasue the update was minor and still using the same hboot. i had thot it was an hboot 1.57 evo v issue that time,not a sprint 2.89/2.95

i didnt mention it this time,as i was fairly certain that the 2.95 update was using a newer hboot,thus preventing it from working. but i definately could have remembered it wrong :o

tdbone1,what is your hboot version? if it is still 1.58.0000 then what wraith is describing may work for you
 
It's 1.58.0000. That never changed on the sprint 3vo with the update. Just the virgin mobile variant went from 1.57.0000 to 1.58.0000.

I have an EVO 3D running ICS with 4ext recovery, MeanROM ICS and juopunutbear hboot 1.58 S-OFF. Performance is slower than it was with Gingerbread (especially 3D games), and I want the features that were removed like message count and call duration.

I would like to have TWRP, Gingerbread, MeanROM, and hboot 1.5. I understand that the files posted are for radios, hboot, and firmware. How do I flash Gingerbread back onto the phone? I understand the first thing to do is to flash hboot 1.5 on the phone. Should I also flash the radios and firmware at that time? Once I do that, can I just flash TWRP, and MeanROM for Gingerbread back on the phone?

I just want to be real careful as this is my only phone and I don't want to brick it.

Have you tried Negalite Blu ROM yet? It is what I went to after meanrom and was a logical improvement with full functionality and great performance on ICS. I stayed on that until getting my Nexus-5. Look for version r121 (or maybe r115).

*The presence of the file on your sd card will prevent you from entering recovery in an emergency situation. It's nothing to panic about, but if you get caught in a bootloop, you will have to manually remove the file using a pc and card reader or another phone. That said, to avoid bootloops and being stuck with no way to boot up and no way to enter recovery, plan ahead. If you are on a rom that requires hboot 1.58 and you flash hboot 1.5, you will hit a bootloop and not be able to access recovery. You would then need to remove the file or flash a compatible rom through fastboot connected to a pc.

Okay. Now with instructions and warnings out of the way, I will give you my personal preference on how to flash a different hboot that will be incompatible with your current rom without getting a bootloop and having to use a pc to fix the situation.

Follow steps 1-3 above. Stop! Now, instead of rebooting into the bootloader, we are going to bypass the bootloader by rebooting directly into recovery. Some roms have this feature built in. I recommend downloading something like ROM TOOLBOX from the play store. It's a great app to have if you are rooted. Rom Toolbox has a built in rebooter menu (with widgets) that allows this function. Alternatively go get QUICK BOOT from the play store. So once in recovery, wipe and flash the rom normally. Once finished, continue to steps 4-7.

This will allow you to do everything completely from your phone and avoid getting stuck. Remember, this is just for when you are changing hboots that will be incompatible with the rom you are already using (ie: ICS to GB). Just following steps 1-7 normally is fine for just flashing radios or switching between different GB hboots etc. [/spoiler]

Those will certainly work. To be honest though, it's probably simplest and safest just to run the RUU.

Get the latest GB RUU 2.17. Place your phone into fastboot USB mode and run the RUU on your pc. That will downgrade you to Gingerbread and return everything to stock.

From there you can add whatever custom recovery you want such as twrp, though I'd suggest 4ext and always avoid cwm with this phone. Just flash the recovery.img through fastboot.

Once you add recovery just flash any compatible rom for the 1.5 hboot.

You may consider trying out some jellybean roms as well while you're on hboot 1.5. They are all aosp (no sense) but very nice.

No, running the RUU that I mentioned contains hboot 1.50. Since you are S-Off you can run any RUU as there are no security checks being performed.

You will lose root, but any rom you flash will contain root. Or if you choose to stay in the stock RUU you can flash superSU via your custom recovery.

Really either way to downgrade will be fine. RUU is probably the safest method to downgrade your hboot. The other method might save you a little time but could cause more headaches if something is done incorrectly.
 
OK cool...maybe I'm confusing things a bit so forgive me for asking a couple more questions.

There is no way I can lose S-OFF by running the 2.17 RUU, correct? And the phone can't relock if it's S-OFF? I went through a lot to get S-OFF on my phone and I don't want to lose it. As long as I know I can just flash another rom and regain my root, I'm OK with running the 2.17 RUU to downgrade.

Sorry for my naivete, but I've done the HTC unlock method to gain root. Then I had to get another phone from Sprint and it had ICS. I used the wire trick to get S-OFF on that. So I just wanted to be sure that running the 2.17 RUU doesn't cause me to lose S-OFF or relock the phone, since I used different methods on different phones.

Now if I wanted to try the jellybean roms, would I just run the 2.17 RUU to downgrade hboot back to 1.5, then flash the jellybean rom?

My ICS phone is much slower than the phone I had with Gingerbread. I thought it was due to the added features, like the animations that were slowing it down, but now I'm starting to wonder if I just got a bad phone. So I wanted to get the stock 1.5 hboot back on in case I decided to reset the phone and return it to the Sprint store for a replacement.

No worries. :) Your phone will never relock or s-on unless you purposely do that with fastboot commands.

I have to agree that I didn't like ICS either. I enjoyed jellybean though.

Once you're on the proper hboot, you can flash any rom that's compatible. 1.50 will allow you to flash GB and JB roms.

You don't have to run the RUU a second time if that's what you're asking. Assuming you stick with 4 ext recovery you would simply boot into your recovery choose wipe all partitions (except sd card) and then just flash your new rom. If a jellybean rom, you'll also need the corresponding gapps package.

You'll be able to flash any rom as often as you want. Just wipe and flash. Unless it's an ICS rom of course.
 
Just wanted to say thank you Brian for all your help. It was just like you said...I ran the RUU to go back to 2.17 and hboot 1.5, then I renamed the recovery file to PG86IMG.zip, put it in the root of my SD, and used the bootloader to load the recovery. Then I loaded the recovery to MeanROM for Gingerbread. Phone works MUCH faster now...but I might play around with Jellybean now that I see how easy it is to update the phone...I see now I can easily go back to Gingerbread if I don't like Jellybean. Once again, thanks for everything!
 
I got a new HTC Evo 3D, because the charger inside of it stopped working. The last one I had was a CDMA but this one has the HTC thing in the middle of the top of the screen and it doesn't have a sprint logo.. so do I have a CDMA or GSM? Also I wanted to get S-OFF and I wanted to downgrade my hboot from 1.58.000 to 1.49, so I saw a thread that said that I had to lock my boot loader and unroot which I did.. now i'm relocked then I was told to run the stock RUU and it was the "RUU_Shooter_ICS_35_S_Sprint_WWE_VM_1.13.652.2_Rad io_1.06.00.0426_NV_1.53_144_release_262287_signed. exe" but every time I do it I get "ERROR[140] invalid boot loader version". My software number is "2.95.652.5 710RD" Can anybody help me and tell me what i'm doing wrong..?

A couple of things to mention here. The RUU you are running is for the Virgin Mobile Variant of the Evo 3d but more importantly, you will need s-off before you can downgrade your hboot version. Also, you'll want 1.50 as 1.49 is a GSM bootloader version. ;)

You will want to use the Juopunutbear (wire trick) method for s-off. All the instructions and downloads for that are here: Unlimited.IO

S-off will be required before you can downgrade your bootloader version.

They tell you to be on the stock RUU. You might be fine on your current setup, but if you want to play it safe, here are the steps for you to successfully complete an RUU for your setup.

1.) Flash THIS FILE via your custom recovery. If you don't have a custom recovery installed, you will need to unlock your bootloader again. Place the file from the first link on the sd card. Then place this in your fastboot directory on your PC. Use the command: fastboot boot recovery.img
Once in recovery, install the zip file that you placed on your sd card.

2.) Place the phone into fastboot USB mode from the bootloader screen. Run this RUU on your pc. When it asks you to plug in the phone, go ahead. Go through all the promts/instructions provided by the RUU and you'll be fully stock RUU in about 5 or 10 minutes.


To proceed with s-off, follow the instructions provided by team unlimited linked above. Here is a helpful video about the wire trick that will show you the proper timing to get it right.


Once you have s-off:

1.) Download the latest superSU HERE. Place that on the sd card in your phone.

2.) Place THIS recovery.img in your fastboot directory on the pc. Issue these two commands in order: First - fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Second - fastboot boot recovery.img

3.) Root the phone. Once the recovery boots after issuing the last command. Install the superSU file on your sd card.

4.) Download the rom of your choice. I assume you wanted to bootloader downgrade to use a jellybean rom? Place the rom you want to use on the sd card.

5.) Download this hboot version: https://app.box.com/s/9mnmwboybvx6jz6jq6fs
Place the file on the ROOT of your sd card (can't be in any folders).

6.) Download this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.siriusapplications.quickboot&hl=en
Run it and select recovery. Grant it super user access when it asks.

7.) From recovery, install the rom.zip you chose to use.

8.) Once the rom is successfully flashed, boot into the bootloader (from recovery is easiest - without booting back into the system first).

9.) The bootloader should detect the hboot file that you placed on the root of the sd card. When asked to update, say yes by hitting volume up. When it's all finished, hit power button to reboot. Important! After booting up, immediately rename or delete the file (PG86IMG.zip) from the root of your sd card.


That should be everything. This should get you s-off, on hboot 1.50 and a rom of your choice!! Good luck and let me know if you get stuck.
 
What was the error code number?

I think I forgot to mention but after flashing the setmainversionlow.zip the bootloader has to be relocked before running the ruu.
