Root Changing Rom's - Advice Please :)

Ok, so it's christmas and I thought I would spice up my phone a little. I'm bored of sense now, so I want to make the jump to Miui. I'm not too worried about my data as nothing I have is really too important. Contacts are synced with google, and so its really just game data I am bothered about. Just a few questions...

1. As far as I understand, I will backup all crucial data, sync google accounts and then boot into recovery and wipe everything. Then flash the new miui rom?

2. How do I backup game / app data stored in my sd card ext 3 partition? I was going to do this with mymemory and titanium backup - but does this do what I want as well?

3. Once Miui is flashed and booted, do I just reinstall apps and it will automatically go to ext 3 sd partition.... or does it not support this?

4. Supposing I don't like Miui or at some point want to revert to sense. Is this as simple as restoring a nandroid? So I take one before I wipe all and then that's effectively a backup done?

5. Can you somehow get the HTC keyboard on Miui? I much prefer it to stock.

6. Is it true it lacks facebook integration? Will miss this, as am a big fan of the contacts sync.

Thanks :)

Do a nandroid, you can then revert back to the time you made it if you don't like MIUI

I'd say use Titanium Backup to backup your apps. I've never used this so can't tell you exactly what to do but someone else will

I use eMIUI 0.12.18, never had an issue with it bar something graphical but it's me being anal. It's a great ROM

I tried Miui yesterday and although it was a very well made ROM it was not my cup of tea. Felt like and iPhone wannabe and the reason I got this phone is that its not an iPhone.

Completely personal choice though and thats the great thing about rooting and installing custom ROMs, there is so much choice.

I am currently running Gingerbread Oxygen 2.0 RC2 and have to say its smooth as butter! Really fast too and apart from the Video Camera not working it seems stable and works well.

Also Don't discount DeFroST. Richard in my opinion makes the best ROMs and as soon as he releases a propper gingerbread ROM I'll be off like a shot.

Good luck and enjoy :D

Thank you both, some useful info there. I completely agree - it is the beauty of android that the user has so much choice. I will be surprised my self if I move away for long, as there are so many extra's I love in sense that you don't even get in stock. No harm in experimenting though ;)

Btw, as much as I love a discussion etc, can either of you actually answer the questions particularly 1-3. Because I won't be trying this until i'm confident with those :P

I presume you have already rooted?

Going on that you have if you backup using titanium then that will save all apps and the data that goes with it. Be careful when going from say AOSP to Sense as if you import settings and things it can really stuff things up. I generally just import apps and the app data and then set all the other little bits up again.

Question 1 that is correct. Backup, wipe/factory reset in recovery...I also wipe the devlik cache that is in advanced settings too if I am changing the type of ROM (eg Sense to AOSP) Then install the ROM that you want.

Question 3 As far as I know Miui has A2SD integrated within it so when you have installed the ROM and then reinstall your apps via titanium they will go straight onto the SD card.

I was a massive fan of sense and thought I could not live without it but I am now completely a AOSP boy and love the look and feel of it. You can still integrate contacts using the Facebook app so nothing lost there. Also if you use Launcher Pro Plus you can use the widgets within that such as friend stream etc.

Worst thing is you will constantly be flashing new ROMs to try the new greatest thing! I flash a new one at least once a week :D

Any more questions just ask :)

1. Yes

2. Achieve root. Before flashing a new rom downlaod Titanium Back Up and back up. Also as has been mentioned Nandriod back Up. (This next bit may only work if flashing and update of the same rom). After the new rom has been installed check the allow from unknown sources tab, then sign back into Gmail, Gmail will the sync/reload all your apps for you.

3. If your ROM supports a2sd then it should automatically store them at ext3

6. There are Facebook apps out there that do the job.

Thanks again. Yes I am rooted so this all sounds A- OK . Just two things...

- what does AOSP mean though? :P
- I can't think of any advanced settings i've actually changed or not knowingly. What type of things is this so I can decide if necessary.

Aosp is android open source project. Vanilla roms (non sense) which miui is based on.

Just back up apps and data as your sense settings will be incompatible

Stuff like wallpaper, sms settings etc

AOSP Android Open Source Project. All the code isn't kept a secret and is freely available for user development or modification.

I don't ubderstand the question.

OK. Sounds fine. Just out of interest, does Miui support 720p video recording?

I think I'm more or less good to go. Going to charge my phone and then ill begin. Thanks, ill let you know how I get on.

yes it does.
so backup games with titanium backup as it restores with data too :P i know as i dont want to restart angry birds and my saved data has followed me about with the roms

make nandroid backup

wipe

install rom (it requires an ext partition for a2sd+ and if a2sd is not working follow the commands on the 1st page of the miui thread on xda)

I was exactly the same and got rid within about 3 hrs, i then had a brain wave and re-installed it
When you play with it more you realise its only taken some influence from iphone and in most cases does everything better and in other cases does android better than android
Its worth giving a chance and play about with as you realise that its so smooth and efficient.

some screenshots, i dont see much iphone in these

and if you dont like the stock launcher that comes with it you can use launcher pro just like every other aosp rom

I did like Miui and it was on the same level as DeFroST for responsiveness etc but I preferred the look of AOSP and like what I can do with DeFroST.

It is a bloody nice ROM though and just goes to show what can be done with Android.

I installed Oxygen 2.0 RC2 yesterday morning but its been causing me no end of issues last night. FC's stalling and really un-responsive. Can't wait for DeFroST 2.3 though. Think Gingerbread is going to be lovely :D

Im sure you know seeing as you're doing what you're doing but it would be worth a shot installing the rom again, wiping etc because ive had no problems at all, runs at an amazing rate. Never been so pleased.

Yeah there are also a few other bits like the glow making the screen go funny on lighter backgrounds etc. Bit of a perfectionist :D

It is a bloody great ROM and am looking forward to Gingerbread but for the moment DeFroST is working better so gonna stick with that...Can't wait for the DeFroST gingerbread ROM!

Likewise.

Running DeFroST 6.1 and it is smooth as anything.

OT

Jay, Have you tried EViollet's custom DeFroST kernels yet?

[AOSP Kernel] DeFrost 128Mhz kernels - xda-developers

If the 875mV min is not stable for you, EViollet has the 925mV clocking down to 128MhZ @ 900mV

6.1 is the fastest most stable ROM I've installed to date...As close to perfection as I could imagine...Well for me anyways. Just reinstalled it and got it set up again and my phone feels like its on amphetamines :D Just simple things like when you want to hide apps it comes up instantly but on my GF's DHD ROM it takes a few seconds to think about it.

I am getting really good results on the 875mV kernel but that one does look good...Presume that means I can set it to 128Mhz on powersave with screen off? Might give it a try over the weekend though.

Looking forward to sorting Data2SD when I get my class 6 card tomorrow :D

Yeah. I just got a class 10 on wednesday, so now I can get data2sd with Sync on and no lag. Means my stupidly high (2500) quadrant scores are more realistic (get 2007 now) but hell, it was fake anyway.

yes it does.

Hi guys I am a noobie! Just like the OP I too decided to spice up my phone. I got bored of Sense on Desire so when I came across MIUI I was instantly blown away by it. I did alot of research on rooting and after a while I rooted (unrevoked) but it wasn't all plain sailing, I hit a snag on HTC drivers but managed to sort that problem out.

Now I understand i have to zip Cyanogen Recovery 1.4 and Cyanogen Rom in order to install a2sd ext3 partiation? The link to Cyanogen Recovery on XDA seems to be dead so I seem to have hit the brick wall?? Am I looking in the right place? help please?

Jay_Kay above mentions that MIUI Rom has a2sd feature included?? Which Rom is he referring to?? Pays multi MIUI 1.0 pack?? Anybody tried this Rom? Is it stable? Which MIUI Rom would u guys recommend? I want MIUI rom that has apps i use daily such as Whatsapp, Ebuddy, Facebook, Gmail and Skype to name the few. Also the correct radio for MIUI is 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2? Correct?

I dont want to go ahead until I get some answers from sumbody. Rooting was relatively easy but Im stuck on the a2sd bit. Its all very confusing esp when there is so much info available on the net. Any help is greatly appreciated. :)

Have you rooted yet? In order to get A2SD functioning, you need to have rooted, partioned your sd and then just use a rom which supports A2SD which all versions of miui do.

- Root
- Download Rom Manager from the market and open it
- Select Partition SD
- Set Swap to 0 and size of the partition to 512mb
- Go and that should be you. Then you just flash the Miui rom and A2SD will work automatically.

You might want to check out the 1st link in my signature... might help.

In terms of the Miui Rom itself, I recommend Eevek's eMiui Rom (English translated fully) - download it from here....
xda-developers - View Single Post - [rom]MIUI 0.12.24 Global search and lots of other stuff

Good luck... PM me if u get stuck or have more questions etc.

Yes Ive rooted using unrevoked couple of days back. I know I am rooted cos I got the Superuser Permission on Desire menu.

I tried to partition my SD card with Rom Manager it wont finish what I started. I set Swap to 0 and size of the partition to 512mb, the phone reboots and then it hangs up on warning triangle sayin its aborting!??

Are you positive I dont have to upgrade SD card's partition from ext2 to ext3 with this eMIUI Rom?? I read somewhere I have to do that??

Sounds like you didn't "flash clockworkod recovery" via Rom manager menu first
