We better not be. Last I heard our privacy policy was pretty strict.

Do you have a Tapatalk login separate from ours?

Do you use an email alias per forum so you can be sure that tied to us?

Yes. I do.

I don't use nor want Tapatalk, I have no use for it and no judgment on it, either. I have email set so mostly Mods here
can reach me. I have not given it out privately. The name I use here belongs to a Gmail address used only for spam.

Anything from Google is referred to a couple of Yahoo accounts - the same as Facebook.

This ad was one big ad mentioning the 7 people liked my post on this site, and your Phandroid Android. It was
done in Google docs, so I can send the whole thing if you give me an address on this site. I have the headers and the Google Doc HTML.

I asked in a spamchaser forum and one reader said it did look like a Tapatalk server, but sent and composed by a Tapatalk user.

I use Thunderbird and get mail via IMAP. I have the whole thing saved. I also have mail set to text only so I can check it out before opening.

Had whoever not used the addy and name from here and just sent a general ad, I would have just deleted it. But since this looks like someone illegally used the USER CP, I thought I'd report it.

As much as I can complain about Google - I don't have anything of theirs on the Windows box and they have mailed to only the addresses I have given them - usually about Play purchases - and nothing else.

I have a galaxy tablet rooted and when I catch packets from Wireshark r somewhere I can't find a DC loader to open tcpcap.please help I'm new at all this and just trying to learn

Well, it's tapatalk, I'm not sure what we can do about it really at this point. :\ I voiced it to our team who expressed frustration.. which is often the case with us and TT.. but short of just nixxing support for them... :|

So what else did they get besides email? Everything in your profile?

I can mention what I've picked up as this unfolded.

According to Tapatalk, they connected the username and email only in a service that we're supposed to appreciate because according to them, we would want you spammed as a reminder to visit us more often.

First - we absolutely did not and do not want that.

Second - we're a legacy user, we ought to have defaulted to opting out of the program, and our site owner was adamant that we had explicitly opted out of it.

Third - a number of other sites have complained that they opted out of the program - and Tapatalk said that they didn't.

Fourth - Tapatalk claims to have served thousands of forums and site admins in Europe are furious not only over the principle (and act) as we are, but also over the fact that it violates the law in several EU countries. Tapatalk countered that because they only collected and associated user names with emails, no personal connection could be made - and they then came out with a statement that they're not violating EU privacy laws - as if such a declaration makes that statement true. It's only true in their fantasy-reality so far as I can tell.

I don't know what is going to become of this but speaking only for myself as a private individual, I expect legal action to begin in Europe, if it hasn't already. I wouldn't know if any civil actions have already started.

Tapatalk has publicly indicated that their next level is social networking with their app. In a display of twisted logic, they actually believe that people want primarily to use their app, and getting to forums is simply a benefit.

Personally, I think they're delusional and that they don't care that they've hurt both forums and members.

That's a hoot. Most of us check in every day.:p

Were those of us who got hit members here who posted in the Tapatalk revolt thread? If so, I think offense was taken where none was really given.

Nope - all that was required was to use the Tapatalk app to (automatically) login and lurk after they made it go live.

Tapatalk has a plug-in that we have to use so their app will work with us, validate that it's you (passwords are encrypted) and let you post if you so choose.

We evidently trusted them to let it go at that when we opted out of this nightmare.

I don't have Tapatalk, have no use for it. Therefore, it had to be the plugin, and I only posted on the Tapatalk Revolt thread more about bad or unwanted updates in general, not Tapatalk.

There are open source alternatives to the Tapatalk app that do not include collection of personal information or logging of forum usage, and have a very simple user interface.

One issue with the Tapatalk API is that the first time a user accesses a forum a series of sql queries are made that retrieve every single sub-forum in the database and send it back to the client encoded as xmlrpc, which is a huge waste of bandwidth. It could take well over a minute to download and process all the sub-forums on sites like androidforums.com.

Fortunately, the Tapatalk API is open source GPL licensed code, so I imagine that there will be derivative works available soon that are much more bandwidth efficient.
