Root Complete Newbie's Guide to rooting and flashing Evo V 4G ROMs/Kernels using fastboot

You need to have the Android SDK or the mini-sdk setup (the mini-sdk is easier and is linked in the first post). Make sure you have the HTC drivers, you can use the HTC sync ones (also linked in OP).

Then you need to unlock the bootloader using HTCdev.com. There are instructions on the site and under "Unlocking with HTC Dev" in the OP. After that is unlocked you need to flash the recovery you want to use through fastboot ("Let's install then boot into recovery!" in OP). You need to download the recovery.img you want to use (there are different options, so that is up to you).

Then I would make a nandroid backup. I know you have done that before with your triumph, but even if you choose 4EXT or TWRP as the recovery the steps are pretty similar.

Then you need to flash some sort of superuser binaries (Superuser or SuperSU) in recovery. This will root the phone.

I just used that link and her guide to root my phone and it was pretty easy :) But one question she says that if you want to reset your phone you have to do it from recovory or it could brick my phone? So what does that mean? im confused and kinda scared to reboot now :/ lol

That means don't use "Factory Data Reset" under Settings > Storage.

In settings, in storage you find this, DO NOT USE IT. You need to use the reset in recovery.

Im getting ready to try to root my htc evo v. Agentc or leslieann, are you guys on right now, in case I run into trouble??
 
I looked under the first thread for instructions, under show and its blank, theres nothing there by the show tag.
 
Im having a problem. The other day when I got my phone, I hooked it up to my pc, it wouldnt recognize my phone. I called htc and they told me how to install htc sync. I installed it and now, Im trying to use leslieanns tutorial on how to root. It said the htc sync should be in the c drive under sdk-tools. The problem is that there is no folder created under that name, nor can I find the file. She says to download the htc sync 3.0.56, but my current version is 3.2.20. I am stuck, is there anyone out here that can help me. Thanks
 
In leslieann tutorial, it said to extract the mini sdk. How do I extract the mini sdk? I just reinstalled the newer version of htc sync and it gave no option, nor was there a option when I right clicked on the file. When I can do that, it says to make sure the files are in C:\sdk-tools folder. Now, it says to copy the recovery file into the exact same folder. If I made sure all the files were in the C:\sdk-tools folder, why am I copying it again to the same folder?? If there is anyone out there that can help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Did you click on the show tag? They all appear for me. This was done to keep it a bit more neat.

But you'll need a ZIP extracting program, like WinZip, WinRar, 7zip, etc. to extract sdk-tools. Then, when you extract them, move that folder to the C:\ drive so that the folder is called C:\sdk-tools

Then move your recovery file (should be named recovery.img) to that directory.
 
Another question, is there a way to get into recovery without using command prompt on the pc. If so, what would be the steps in doing so?? (using the phone to get into this) Also, I am rooted and am thinking about flashing a rom, where do I put the rom file. I have TWRP, so I open that up and just put it in there?? Thanks for your help.
 
If you installed 4EXTRecovery or TWRP 2.1.0+, then you can simply turn off the phone and turn on by using vol down + power. It has to be a complete shutdown, as there is an option in power called "Fast Boot" that puts the phone into hibernate and won't allow it to go into recovery.

The other option is, if you're on a rooted ROM, to use Quick Boot (it's an app in GPlay). But if you're using CWM or TWRP 1.1.1, you won't flash kernels properly without using fastboot (the computer command prompt).
 
Oh, one more important question I forgot to ask. When I got into TWRP, I used the backup partition option, is that the same as backup in clockworkmod. I just want to be sure before I do a factory reset. And just to confirm, I have to do the factory reset in TWRP, right?? Thanks in advance for answering my questions.
 
TWRP has a backup option, I don't remember if it's backup partition or if it was just called backup. It gave you the option to select which partitions you wanted to backup.

And there's a wipe menu that does the factory resetting. It should be straight forward. All of the steps are listed in the first post of this thread.
 
I see where you said there are different options on what to backup in twrp1.1, is there anything additional I need to check mark (I want my apps, settings and stuff like that exactly as they are now). I have to learn this different recovery, a little different than CWM which I used on my triumph. Thanks again.

Actually it is only the apps that you have moved to the SD card. When you move apps to the SD card the app info is put in this folder. It should appear empty with your phones file manager app but its contents are visible when viewed via you pc. Your custom recovery backs up this folder.

Certain third party apps can see 'hidden' folders. If you name any file/folder with a . (period) in front of it, it's the linux command for 'hide'.

Windows doesn't understand that .<whatever> files are supposed to be hidden, so it displays it.
 
section three on the complete walkthrough is impossible to do for mac because there is no "run" option. The best i thought was going to terminal and manually find the folder which i did: which is /Users/yourusername/downloads

but none of the stuff came up that you said in step 3 so can break it down for me for the mac version? Im stuck there HELP!!!!!!!
 
There is a mac version of fastboot included in Mini-SDK. So you would have to run that program in the same directory that you have your files. The commands you put into fastboot are the same.

Outside of that, I do not know. I've never owned a Mac. I haven't used one since elementary school. So, I can't help you with that.

I seem to have some problem flashing roms, I've followed this guide to the T, as far as I can tell, but I always get hung up when flashing the rom.

All I am trying to do at this point is unlock the phone and flash the Deodexed stock rom I downloaded from "http://goo.im/devs/jmz/shootervm/JmzStock_VM_Shooter_Deodex.zip".

I successfully flashed TWRP 1.1.1, and I have created a nandroid backup of my stock rom.

From stock rom, I use adb commands 'adb boot reloader' then use 'fastboot boot recovery.img' to get into TWRP since I am S-ON. Then, I format /data /system /cache and dalvik cache. After that, I install the zip for the deodexed rom.

After doing this I reboot the phone, then it just sits at the white HTC screen. Ive waited over 20 minutes before, but the screen never disappears. I always have to boot back into recovery and restore from my nandroid backup.

I'm not new to the custom rom scene, as I've owned a nexus one, and a MT in the past, both flashed with custom roms. I just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong here.

can anyone help? thanks.
 
I type fastboot and get its not a command is even try with git what is wrong I extracted sdk tools to C:/sdk-tools I open it up with command but fastboot says its not a command
