Root Complete Newbie's Guide to rooting and flashing Evo V 4G ROMs/Kernels using fastboot

Either one works. Flashing superuser (I recommend CWM-SuperSU-v0.96.zip which is SuperSU and is better than regular superuser) will simply obtain root for you on whatever ROM you're on (including bone stock)
 
even after rooting successfully, I'm still getting signal drops bars goes up and down and sometimes out of service. wasn't rooting it suppose to fix that?

So I've stalked the forum for a while grabbing info about the Android phones I've had. The EVO V 4G was perhaps the most...involved...root I've had to do..

That having been said, batch files work great for speeding up the process!

The zip contains 5 bat files. Just unzip them to your sdk-tools folder (or whatever you named it). The first line gives the name of the file and its function, the lines after that give the exact contents of the bat files. For those who don't know what these are, you can click these from windows, rather than having to load the command prompt (cmd) and type them in manually. Nothing fancy, just takes some of the typing out of the process.

These first 3 files are used during the actual rooting process. Shouldn't need them again unless you need to reroot or start over.

1 Get ID Token.bat--displays your ID Token in a command window.
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem get_identifier_token
pause

2 Flash Unlock.bat--flashes the unlock_code.bin
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin

3 Flash Recovery.bat--flashes and reboots into recovery
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot boot recovery.img

These last 2 files are for convenience to quickly get into bootloader or recovery.

0 Bootloader.bat --Just loads the bootloader
adb reboot bootloader

0 Recovery.bat--boots into recovery
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot recovery.img

you might want to contact the OP. that looks super useful.
 
Little issue with the guide. Flashing the rooted stock rom killed my ability to s-off. Had to RUU and jump through a bunch of hoops in order to get S-Off. Thanks to the guys at Unlimited.IO for all the help. Think it would be a nice edit to the main post to at least make note of a potential problem with rooted stock vs stock with root patch.

I know back in my days with the Optimus V you could activate after being rooted. The only catch was you had to be on stock rom, or some froyo based roms. I imagine its probably similar here.

Ignore that, it was for the Sprint Evo 3d.

The only risk involved is possibly wiping the sd card if you get the timing wrong, just use a spare card. I've posted this numerous times, you're not actually shorting anything on the phone what is happening is that you're taking a pull down resistor low by grounding it to the sd card frame. Getting s-off will make your life so much easier down the road.

I had absolutely no issues getting s-off using the rooted stock rom. And yes all of the guys at Unlimited.IO are great and exceptionally talented.
 
I have a question, and the title says it all. I've successfully unlocked my phone and I've verified it through fast boot.....But I do not have root, can someone please help me with where I went wrong, and how I can achieve root so I can s-off my phone, thank you.
 
This is my first android phone, and thus my first rooting attempt. Once I am done with this excellent guide I intend to do the "fix everything by turning your phone into a evo 3d" guide. I have a coupe initial questions before I start;

In step 1 do I need to use the stock rom or can I go right to Harmonia as I intend.

In step 2 the OP recommends to put the Stock ROM + root in a folder named ROMs. I downloaded the "JmzStock_VM_Shooter_Odex.zip" (as well as "Harmonia_3.16_Evo_V.zip") but do I need another file? What is "+ root" that the OP refers to?

Thanks. My questions at this point pertain to Jerofld's guide and concern the first two steps of it, so that is why I posted here. Leslie Ann's guide assumes your phone is rooted with s-off before you start and references this thread for help regarding that. My phone is brand new and stock at the moment and I was hoping to have the following questions addressed before I initiated the rooting/s-off procedures detailed by jerofld here;

In step 1 do I need to use the stock rom (shooter_odex) or can I go right to Harmonia as I intend.

In step 2 the OP recommends to put the Stock ROM + root in a folder named ROMs. I downloaded the "JmzStock_VM_Shooter_Odex.zip" (as well as "Harmonia_3.16_Evo_V.zip" in case I can skip Odex) but do I need another file? What is "+ root" that the OP refers to?
 
Hey guys it did work for me the htc unlock from htcdev.com

I had to try it twice. Even though it asked me to update my bootloader I did not.

Hope this helps someone else. Im on to root then s-off.
