So your command prompt looks like this:
C:\sdk-tools>

And then you are inputting adb reboot bootloader

What error message is coming up after you try running the command? If you are running it from the right directory, it may be that the drivers aren't properly installed?
Can you try running the command again and then take a screen shot and post up a pic of your command prompt?

Step 2) Getting the device identifier token and then flashing unlock_code.bin

fastboot oem get_identifier_tokenMy progress seems to halt after this command, I'm sitting at fastboot on phone , but never get the phone identifier. Just says, "waiting for device" ideas?

reloaded my drivers, successful root!:D

errors in purple

i have used the above code thing in htc unlocker using all other compatible devices b/c i did not see a evo v 4g on the list there is a evo 3d (*sprint) but im using VM evo v 4g

but it fails to unlock the phone im sure the above error in the code has something to do with it or im usig the rong thing in htc dev site

I got as far as attempting to use HTCDev. However, when I selected my phone (actually tried the Evo 3D Sprint and "All Other Supported Devices") a window opened cautioning me about unlockng the bootloader and asking if I wanted to continue with the choices of "Yes" and "No". Only the "No" button worked.

So now what?

Htc sync is down. No download link

Edit: I could not find the original HTC sync set up file, but I went on to the HTC website and I am currently downloading version 3.2.20... This won't brick my phone will it? What happened to the original file?

I am also curious about this, but I found the version 3.3.10. Am I in danger of bricking my phone?

Htc sync won't brick your phone. It's just drivers and software to interact with your pc. It doesn't change anything on your phone at all or mess with anything root related. You just need htc sync to root for the drivers so your pc will recognize the phone when it's plugged in and so you can enter commands through command prompt to gain root.

I've got a VM hboot 1.57 device and the instructions worked just fine. I haven't done the s-off yet so I'll try that another day. I spent some time clicking around until I found htc_sync_3.0.5617_us.exe and that let me sync even though it's not technically for this model.

Also, after I had success with root patch I tried using ROM Manager to install the Harmonia ROM but that didn't work at all. Went back to using fastboot as your instructions said and then I was able to put on Harmonia 3.17 just fine.

Thanks for the good instructions!

I'm trying to root, as you probably quessed. My phone wasn't seeing my computer but i got some drivers and walla it see's the computer. The fastboot bootloader command works and I get into the bootloader. Trying for the fastboot usb it gives me that if i move the curser up or down but whenever i, while using the cmd prompt "fastboot oem get_identifier_token" the prompt hangs at <waiting for device> and I've done it about 10 times with no further luck.

Do you have usb debugging enabled in the phones settings?

Followed the video step by step by step, have twrp 1.1.1 recovery on my phone, and superuser using the deodexed version of the stock rom provided in the links. BUT, after dl'ing root checker and ti backup, the phone is still telling me i have not achieved root. any clues as to where i went wrong? I've rooted over 6 different phones, i own an OP v and a Moto Triumph that work wonderfully, but I just cant seem to figure out where I went wrong with this one. If anyone has any insight i'd greatly appreciate your time! Thanks in advance!

Edit: must have been error with original flash, reflash with su and odex and everything works great

My rooting went flawlessly using this tutorial with the video. If your programs are installed properly and you take your time following each step you should have no issues.

running 64bit windows 8 and had a few issues with the drivers but after I found individual drivers on the net, I was able to get things moving again

Thanks alot. I created an account and followed the instructions and had no problems at all. Planning on installing my first ROM that isn't the Odex.

Unlocked using the HTC method easily, placed all the appropriate file in their places, but I have tried installing android sdk from the link to different paths and downloading the tools a few times now, but I just can't seem to get the path right in the command in step three. This seems so simple, but I just can't seem to get it. Where specifically should I be installing it? I have been just installing to C:
If anyone can offer any advice, I would appreciate it. About to give up until this is simplified, but I will feel very defeated.

Windows 7
64-bit

There is no correct place to put it but for following the guide its easier to put it in the same place. You said you installed it to c: does that mean when you downloaded you saved it to c:\? Maybe you did, but you have to actually extract the zip file to c:\
