Thanks for the reply. SDK is an installer which I instructed to install in C:
I didn't really think it mattered where I installed it, I just followed the guide, got an error and didn't know what else to try. I am downloading the wrong thing, perhaps? The page on the android sdk page has the adt bundle as well as just the sdk tools. I have tried installing both and recieved errors. I have downloaded the tools and updated. Perhaps I just need to start over again write down the various error messages I encounter. I have tried this too many times. Other phones I have rooted no prob. This is just giving me hell.

Hmm, I'm sorry you're having so many problems with it! Usually it's very simple. It might be helpful to know what errors you're getting, it might help us determine the issue! We will get it figured out though, don't give up! :)
 
OMG I feel stupid. I kept installing to C: instead of C:\sdk-tools!?!
Don't know how I could have read that part of the guide wrong several times.
I guess it helps to take a break now and then and start fresh.
Hopefully all will work now. Sheesh.

Definitely! Sometimes you just need a break and come back to it! Always good to start with a clear mind and a fresh set of patience. Sounds like you're probably under control now, but let us know if you run into any other issues.
 
Since I have already unlocked my bootloader, I have moved to step 5 (install & boot into recovery). What state does my phone need to be in before I can begin the rest of this operation?

If I understand what you're asking, the phone has to be in fastboot usb mode. Because you will be using fastboot commands to flash the recovery. You get there with adb reboot bootloader

That will get you into fastboot, and once there you use fastboot command, fastboot flash recovery recovery.img to flash the recovery. Does that answer your question? Or did you mean something else?
 
Yes, that is what I meant. Thanks. The command (cd C:/sdk-tools) works. With the phone then in fastboot usb mode, the command (adb reboot bootlaoder) results in a message that the command is not recognisable. I notice *****phone relocked**** on my phone, though HTC insists that this sin't an obstacle to the process of rooting. Also, I see that 'reboot bootloader' is an option on my phone at this point, if that helps.

Damn, I really appreciate all the hand-holding. I really thought this would be simple!

;) it should be pretty simple. It's no problem here! If your bootloader says relocked that is the problem. It needs to be unlocked to flash the recovery. So for whatever reason it is relocked, we have to unlock again. You should be able to use the same unlock code as before to unlock again!
 
Hello All:

This is my First Time at Hacking an Android Phone, I have the "EVO V 4G" with Android 4.0.3 and HBOOT-1.57.0000 Boot Loader.

I got the Phone Unlocked, but I am nervous at Applying (TWRP) version 1.1.1, because previous Tutorials on doing this to the EVO 3D seem to be targeting Android 2.2 and 2.3, and most everyone here is mentioning HBOOT-1.50..

I have been able to figure out everything else, except for the following.

So, my questions are....

Does (TWRP) version 1.1.1 work fine on HBOOT-1.57.0000 with Android 4.0.3?

Should I be using the next version of TWRP for this HBOOT or Android Version??

At this point, I just want to install the SU Patch, and I am mostly happy with the pre-installed software.

The phone I really want to Flash is the Wildfire S. That poor thing has just about Zero Space left, with the pre-installed software.. It really needs to be Thinned-Out...

I also have an HTC ONE that I might experiment with.

Is this a One Time Thing ( like just after the Recover is replaced with a different version ) or is this Forever ( unless the original Recovery is replaced on the phone )?

Is there a way to replace the original Recovery or Make a Back-Up of the original Recovery before replacing it?

I want to set my kid's phones to allow SU mode, so they can remove unwanted apps if needed, but don't want to leave a potential Brick Mode in the Menus.

I have HTCDriver_4.0.0.009_20121107.exe from HTC Sync v3.3.17.

HTCDriver_4.0.0.009_20121107.exe seems to install "My HTC" driver 2.0.7.14 dated 6-NOV-2012, which is used for the HTC EVO V 4G, the HTC ONE and the Wildfire S, all on Virgin Mobile ( carried on the Sprint network ), when USB Debugging is enable on each of these phones.
 
Ok, so here's a quick question.
Approximately how long does this procedure take, and is it difficult for someone not having done it before with not a whole lot of knowledge about it.

I bought my HTC EVO V 4G ( EVO 3D with 4G WiMax for Virgin Mobile ) on 30-NOV-2012, today ( 08-DEC-2012 ) I have it UNLOCKED, Recovery Partition loaded with TWRP 2.3.1.0 and Superuser-3.0.7-efghi Installed. I don't have S-OFF set.

Total Time, not including Research, about 20-30 Minutes. ( Research, about 8-10 Hours )


I have never performed this procedure to an Android Phone before ( I did root an Android Table ), but I have 30 plus years working with Microcomputers, so the Command Line Android Debugger stuff is something I am quite familiar with..

Yes I think Ive done the same thing rooted it with S-On thats it but my qustion is I have insureince on the phone from virgin mobile & if it brakes or anything & I send it out for repair or replacement They will see that I rooted the phone so my insureince is gone because I rooted it. Is there a way to unroot the phone & have it back to full stock locked again?

Yes it's pretty simple and painless. If you have taken the newest ota there is a file you have to flash first. Then if you are s-on you relock the bootloader then run the Ruu. Now it will still show your bootloader as relocked instead of locked. Gaining s-off with the wire trick will return it to locked. Currently in the works is a flashable file that turns it to locked status. There is a way which has been discovered that involves some hex editing but it still being worked on and trying to make it easier for people by making it a flashable zip.
 
HI, I think I have rooted my Htc EVO 4g but none of the rooted apps are working, the S-off is labeled when I go to my H-boot screen. I'm not sure but I don't think I flashed the rom or even put a custom one on does that have to be done for the rooted apps to work?

Can someone help me out?

You can flash a custom rom that contains super user or just flash the super user patch on your stock rom. I thought you already had to be rooted to get s-off?!?

Before we do anything, download Root Checker from the play store and run it and see if you have root or not!

Well I'm assuming you followed this guide right? The instructions in a nutshell are:

1. Unlock Bootloader
2. Flash Custom Recovery
3. Root
4. S-off optional

So you didn't download and flash TWRP to your phone?
