Root Complete Newbie's Guide to rooting and flashing Evo V 4G ROMs/Kernels using fastboot

That error is because your bootloader is unlocked and it needs to be locked to flash the RUU when S-ON.

If the phone is working for normal usage you may be better off just staying with what you have for now. I don't think flashing the RUU takes away your Boost flash but I'm not sure and don't want you to make it worse if your phone is currently working.

Maybe someone at Boost is clever enough to have figured out a way to block custom recoveries, but I doubt it.

Same here. I did everything on the list except for S-off, but I'm being told I still don't have root access. Forgive a newb for a dumb question, but exactly which part of this execise was supposed to give root?

Either flashing a rooted rom (basically any rom) through recovery or flashing super user through recovery. Super user is what grants root permissions on the phone. And it's included in every rom.
 
It sounds then, like my phone should be rooted. Any ideas why it's not taking? Could it have something to do with HTC Sync's problems on Windows 8? Do I need to use the work around mentioned earlier?

No, it shouldn't have anything to do with that. If your computer recognizes your phone, then you're fine with that. In my opinion, HTC sync is unnecessary bloatware - you only need the drivers.
 
Windows 8 has some driver problems that there's a work around for. But if you can do any of the commands you should be fine. Can you tell me exactly where you're getting stuck or getting an error?
 
I think that you misread the warning, I believe that it was telling you that the recovery wasn't configured, you need the separate 4EXT application from the play store for that. Just download root checker from the store to confirm root on your device. :D

Root checker says my device doesn't have proper root access.

I haven't flashed superuser, but I flashed the rom linked to at the beginning of the thread. Do I need to flash superuser separately? I thought it was included in the rom.
 
It is included in the rom. Hmmm... Maybe you should try a full wipe and reflash of the rom? It's odd though, the phone itself should be rooted but you have to grant super user permissions to apps.

Maybe that's it, when you ran root checker or the 4ext app did you get a superuser popup and tell it to allow? The first time you run an app that requires root permissions, you have to grant it permission.

There are a few options, you can tell it to remember or just allow one time which would mean it would prompt again next time. Also in the super user app, you can set the default to allow automatically if you want to but may be a security risk.
 
I just uninstalled and reinstalled root checker because I initially installed and opened it before trying to root, but it's still telling me I don't have root access. 4ext told me the first time I opened it that it needed root access, but it wasn't available. I will try reflashing, but I'm about to leave for the rest of the day, so it will have to be tomorrow. I'll report when I've had the chance to do it.
 
Okay, so after reflashing with no success, I realized the size of the rom zip was less than half the size it should have been. I redownloaded and after a scary moment where I realized my usb cable had become dislodged while transferring the rom to the sd card (I swore that would never happen to me), and having windows fix the sd card, I finally got it moved to the sd, flashed, and I now have root :) Now I know... always check the rom download. It seems like I've read about a lot of rom downloads being corrupted in the short time I've been studying up on this.
 
Yay! Congrats :) Corrupted downloads happen from time to time. It's not a big deal as you can simply wipe and flash again. Where you really want to be checking the integrity of downloads is when you are s-off and flashing different bootloaders. A corrupt bootloader flash could leave you with a Perma brick.
 
I got my phone unlocked then continued the steps but then when I got to the step to add the recovery it wont let me load why??? :( why is it so difficult just to root my phone can anyone help me and I did got it to load and then it wont rest my phone to the root settings on my phone said some kind of error my phone is working perfectly fine except all the apps and contacts on my phone disappeared any help would be appreciated!!

So if your phone is working perfectly now, then it's all good :) and the next step is to re-install all your Google Play apps and your contacts.

I hope you made a backup of your contacts, or there might be a Google backup from where you can restore.

Quote from the beginning of the guide:
Note: This WILL wipe out your settings, apps, et cetera. Please make any/all necessary backups before proceeding.
 
One question. May be you guys already answered this one. I couldn't find it.
Couple weeks ago I unlocked / rooted my EVO 4G. Didn't S-off. Just wanted to root it to instal tethering app. Few days after I received System Update. I started, it went to recovery screen (?), I choose the zip file (something like OTA_Shooter_ 35 S Sprint). Phone rebooted it self, and after few minutes message came again: System update is ready.
What can I do to make this update???
