Help Connect via WIFI problems

Tried to search this thread to find out if custom (non-stock) ROMs solve GSM Hero hang ups after a few minutes of using.
(any of those listed on hero-roms on blogspot)

Has anyone solved this problem after flashing custom ROM?

look for firmware updates for your router, worked on my zoom x6 and its working great

Already latest firmware for my router (Huawei HG520s, brought to me by my ISP).

In a few days, I will try to root Hero and to see it it helps. Acording to this link, the problem is Android related, not HTC Hero specific... :( Still not solved... c'mon Android developers...

hey everyone. i wanted to chime in on htc hero router/wifi issues. i have the hero on villainrom 12 (2.1) and a linksys wrt54g running tomato firmware. i definitely had a lot of wifi issues at first (hero saying its connected via wifi but not working at all. this was SO annoying).

i ended up reading an xda thread that said to put your router in b/g mixed mode rather than only g mode (which mine was in) and voila, i've had no more weird wifi issues at all with my hero.

Nahhhh - factory reset it - it will spring back into action.
Did this on mine and it has worked seamlessly ever since.

Are you connecting via a router? What encryption (if any) is being used? Any other security layers in place such as a firewall, access control lists etc? Are IP addresses allocated via DHCP or are you using static IPs?

From your brief description it sounds as if the device can't route data. The first thing I would check is that the Hero has a correct IP address. In "Wireless Controls/Wi-fi Settings" tap the connection and ensure that the listed IP address corresponds to the same subnet as your router.
How do I see the IP addresses? tapping on the connection name brings a popup msg that will say the following data: Status, speed, signal strength and security and 2 buttons: diconnect and Cancel.

There should be an IP address listed underneath Security. Is the wifi network connection status displayed as Connected?

Hi guys,
It seems that I'm also having similar problems.
My hero works great at home (netgear router) but today I tried 3 different wi-fi public networks and although it said 'connected', had a good signal strength, I wasn't able to open any webpage or even load weather forecast.

I'm running it on android 2.1.
Has anyone got the same problem and managed to solve this?

Try a factory reset - you may be pleasantly surprised (obviously make sure your contacts are in your google account!).

I think the Hero is definitely picky...
Is there a list anywhere of known 'problem' routers for the Hero, or is it hit and miss from Hero to Hero?

I'm trying to connect my Hero to a coffee shop router, I know it's a netgear, but my Hero just can't seem to find it!?!

I know the name of the network, and the password, and have tried to add the network, but still won't connect, grrr.

Any ideas?

The nearest thing we've got is this post earlier in the thread. It's not very current though, so at some point I'll need to think about updating it to make to more helpful.
Thanks; well the 'problem' AP is through a netgear router, but can't remember the model, and it's not too cleverly been built into a wall so hard to check!

Most probably the Hero dying though, it's coming up to a year old, with a year warranty, so today it's decided not to connect via USB all of a sudden, only difference from a couple of hours earlier is a new SIM card, grrr.

Netgear kit is normally pretty compatible. If you can access the browser-based setup it should tell you the model and firmware.

Shh, not so loud.... my own Hero is almost 13mths old. Don't give it ideas! ;)

Wild guess.... remove all wifi APs from "Wifi settings", reboot both router and handset, then try to connect.

Personally, I'd factory reset the handset now that you have switched to a different provider. It was this that cured all of my connection problems.

Incidentally, anyone know if the Wildlfire is 're-packaged Hero' hardware? It looks mighty tempting with the deals on offer - and soooo much cheaper than the Desire

Unfortunately the router is in a coffee shop, it's not my network, so I can't get access to it without a password, and their 'IT guy' isn't on-site.

I guess it's just one of those things, grrr.

But thanks.

For those who have following problem: wifi connects successfully, but no one webpage, appsstore or anything else related to internet opens.
Check your running services list (Settings/Applications/Running Services) and try to stop one by one those which seem suspicious (might cause problem) for you.
In my case it was: Remote Media BETA app who was blocking access to internet

Hi, this is my first post, just got my first android phone yesterday.
I have been using it for a day, when this problem occured : connected to the wireless router, but there was no data transmitted.
I tried everything, reseting the router, taking out the battery, changed to static ip from the phone, tried to find an application, what was blocking the wifi, connected to my other wireless ap (same network), but non helped (the only thing i haven't tried to connect the phone to a different network).
Then I updated my router firmware and added the MAC address to a different static IP address in the DHCP settings of my router, reconnected and it works again.

Details:
It's a HTC Desire phone and Asus WL500gpv2 router (never buy an asus router, it sucks), no encryption, open wifi.

Hope this helps.

I'm in the same boat, I just bought HTC Hero yesterday but the wireless doesn't connect, it says "Wireless not in range", I'm sitting next to my router where my brother's iPhone has excellent connectivity.

I'm using HTC Hero G3 2.1 firmware.
TP-Link TL-WR841N router (WPA personal security)

Is there any solution to it?

From what I have experienced and read, there seems to be two primary solutions.
1. factory reset your phone
2. Avoid some routers, and mess with router settings to output b or g or both and see what happens.

Mine has been problem free since (1) above.

Good luck

When I turn wifi on, I try to connect to an open network with a high signal, it just won't connect. This is a new problem that I just noticed yesterday..but my phone is only about a month and a half old so I don't know why there is a problem. What do I do??

Perhaps best asked after reading and trying the many discussed potential remedies in this thread?

Well, I read this solution on another forum which has worked for me, if you aren't broadcasting your SSID on your router i.e. using hidden SSID then broadcast it, HTC hero with firmware 2.1 can't look up for hidden networks even after you properly provide the settings for it. iPhone on the other hand has no problem connecting to the hidden networks.

It really sucks because I can't afford to make my network visible, permanently....
