Root Considering Rooting - Need Guidance!

Ok, so I'm rooted now!! Woo hoo!! Now what do you guys recommend? Can I start redownloading all of my apps, or do I need to flash a rom now first?

Also, if I'm going to flash a rom, do I need to download things like WidgetLocker or Launcher Pro (I've been using both)?

Congrats on Rooting!!! I suggest reading the entire "After Rooting" section of http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/395962-rooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html, that should get you started. Remember before making any changes, be sure to create a nand backup.

Now go and get your flash on! :D

So based on the recommendations I'm looking to install the MikG 3.0 ROM. However, I like what Launcher Pro provides (adjust the number of screens, animations between screens, and changing the Apps/Phone/Add to Home Screen bar on each page) and use Widgetlocker (mostly so I don't have to have the swipe down unlock screen) and Folder Organizer.

Does MikG 3.0 come with those features? If not, I'm considering flashing an AOSP ROM. What's the most stable AOSP Rom? Thanks guys!

Mik 3.0 doesn't come w/ LP or WL but if you'd like you can easily change the launcher on Mik 3.0....If you're going the route of AOSP I'd recommend the latest CM7 build.

Thanks Frenchy! If I'm using Launcher Pro, would I save space using something like CM7 rather than MikG?

NP. I'm not sure I understand your question BUT AOSP ROM's are MUCH smaller than sense ROM's, so you'd be saving space there.

Ok, so I'm not a fan of MikG, it takes up over 100 mb more than the stock Rom and does not have Swype?!

Do any of these Roms have swype?

Ok, nevermind, got Swype to work (though I don't recall seeing that "recording credit card information thing" before, that's a bit scary).

So I guess now I have to try to partition before flashing MikG, would that resolve the low internal memory issue?

Patitioning is only a part of it. Make sure you have dt's a2sd installed. You also need to have Terminal Emulator installed. I think Mik's had a2sd installed already, not real sure though. to check in terminal emulator just type a2sd and press enter if it says something like:
a2sd is not a reconized command then you don't have it. If it tells you to type a2sd help for more help then you do.

Once you know its on the phone go to terminal and type:
su
a2sd install
this will start the install process. Your Phone will reboot and seem like it may not boot back up. This is normal and it will just give it time.

Aosp roms have more room for apps than Sense Roms but are as pretty as Sense.

Kernel choice for MikG and most Sense Roms tends to be Freedom. I'm more an AOSP guy myself.

Thank you! I had a couple quick questions. You said AOSP roms have more room but "are as pretty as sense," did you mean "aren't?" I'm actually surprised at all the features in MikG, and it is definitely pretty.

Also, I need to partition the SD card BEFORE I install MikG right? So I'll need to reload the stock ROM using my nandroid, then partition, then install MikG right?

Also, by installing A2SD, you mean installing DarkTremor? I can do that by following the guide, right?

Also, do you like AOSP for any particular reason? I'd imagine it would run a bit quicker since it doesn't have Sense? I'm most likely going to use Launcher Pro and Widget Locker even with MikG.

a2sd is what dt does. some roms have a2sd built in while others have it supported so you will need dt to manually move your apps. you will need to read either the op or the changelog and see what a2sd is supported if at all.

and you do not need to partition your card before mikg, but it is easier if you do. if you already on mikg then all you need to do is partition your card then wipe dalvik cache and cache and then re-flash mikg. there is no need to wipe data.

i like them both. aosp just needs a little more love then sense. you need to flash the gapps file to get the market and other google apps. you might need to do the gps fix by flashing the qualcom drivers:[FIX][AOSP][MIUI] All GPS fixes! - xda-developers. and you need to find a luancher that you like. i like go launcher myself.

Ocnbrze, of the AOSP's, which one do you like? I really like all the additional features on MikG, are any of the AOSP's similar that have the bloatware uninstalled?

the majority of custom roms that are out there will have bloatware removed so you should have to worry about that. with aosp though keep in mind that a lot of the sense widgets that you are used to will not be there in aosp roms. a lot of launchers have similar widgets, but to me they are not the same thing. aosp roms are smaller, faster, and get the best battery life compared to sense roms. so as long as you get used to a particular launcher like go launcher then you will no problem with aosp roms.

for me cm7 is a great rom. if you want something different then try the xplod rom. they have not incorporated a lof of ICS elements into the rom.

Perfect! I don't use sense, I always layer it with Launcher Pro, but I guess I can try something like Go Launcher. How does it compare to Launcher Pro?

Thanks for all the info, I'm trying to figure this all out and get it done before this afternoon because I have to work.

Haha, yes I use Beautiful Widgets for those weather clocks. Great feature.

I'll give Go Launcher a try then! Does it offer you the ability to create folders or will I still need to download Folder Organizer?

By the way, when the ICS mods come out, will those have the ability to create folders like in ICS?

i'm not sure on folders. i never use them so i'm not sure. and the same goes for ics, i do not know. sorry:o

Also, what Kernel does everyone suggest for CM7?

of course every kernel will react differently on different phones so sometimes it is hard to recommend a kernel. however TIAMAT hands down is the most consistent for most people. it works beautifully on my evo.

I have an Evo 4G as well. It's build number 004 and I was using the most updated version of GB. It's was a 2.16 (I don't recall what that number applied to).

In the list of dl's, some have sbc in the name. those are sbc kernels, I do believe.

I am also thinking that guys were finding some of the older versions to be more phone friendly, 4.07 comes to mind but someone else chime in here and correct me if I am wrong.
