Root Considering Rooting - Need Guidance!

This is probably a stupid question, but can you do a factory reset when you already have S-Off?

I'm about to install CM7 and the 3.3.7 kernal, and I'm already running MikG 3.0. Should I wipe everything, then do a factory reset, then flash everything, or should I forego the factor reset?

Also, when I'm flashing GAPPS and the GPS fix, should I flash those before or after flashing the kernel?

Thanks guys!

yes that will not affect your s-off status. and that is a perfect time to do it, just do it in recovery.

and for me i flash cm7 and gapps in the same recovery session then reboot and get everything setup then go back to recovery and flash the kernelonce you know that cm7 and the gapps file flashed correctly. and the gps qualcomm drivers can be flashed anytime after the rom is flashed.

i like to take things step by step. i do not like to flash a bunch of things all at once that way you can troubleshoot any issues and pinpoint the problem easier. but if you want to flash everything all at once that is up to you.

Thanks I'm doing it all right now, this is a lot of fun. Thanks to everyone who helped out in this thread!!

i'm not sure on folders. i never use them so i'm not sure. and the same goes for ics, i do not know. sorry:o

Ocnbrze, so CM7 comes with ADW Launcher, do you suggest I uninstall that and load on Go Launcher, or stick with ADW since that's what came installed? So far I am not sure that I have a preference beyond Launcher Pro allowing me to minimize (not completely disable) the notification bar.

Also, I just realized I may want to flash the GAPPS Google Talk feature version, do you think I need to rewipe everything to installs the GAPPS Google Talk feature, or since everything seems to be working ok thus far, just leave it be?

that is up to you. i like go launcher myself. i do not really like adw. so either way up to you. it will not affect cm7 in anyway.

now that you have the market, you can juts download it. but if you feel you need to start over, you can just wipe dalvik cache and cache and re-flash the gapps file.

Thank you! Google Talk is already on the phone, but I don't think it has the Video feature (which I think the other GAPPS version provides). Does that change your view as to what I need to do?

Yup, you were right, all I had to do was reflash it, now my Google Talk has video!!! WOO HOO!

Patitioning is only a part of it. Make sure you have dt's a2sd installed. You also need to have Terminal Emulator installed. I think Mik's had a2sd installed already, not real sure though. to check in terminal emulator just type a2sd and press enter if it says something like:
a2sd is not a reconized command then you don't have it. If it tells you to type a2sd help for more help then you do.

Once you know its on the phone go to terminal and type:
su
a2sd install
this will start the install process. Your Phone will reboot and seem like it may not boot back up. This is normal and it will just give it time.

Aosp roms have more room for apps than Sense Roms but are as pretty as Sense.

Kernel choice for MikG and most Sense Roms tends to be Freedom. I'm more an AOSP guy myself.

So, concerning a2sd, do I need to run the terminal emulator everytime I want to send applications to the SD card, or will new applications install to the SD card automatically after you send dalvic cache to the SD card?

When I ran "a2sd reinstall" the first time it booted back up immediately, but when I checked the memory on the phone it actually showed that my internal memory was LESS than before. So I tried running "a2sd cachesd" and it said all of the permissions were denied. So I took a swing and tried "a2sd reinstall" again, and no it's hopefully (??) taking forever to boot back up, and has a flashing green LED...

Once you activate a2sd in terminal emulator it automatically installs in the right place. You're good to go. :)

Rxpert is correct here. The only thing I think he should have mentioned is to make sure you do a Nandroid.

(If you follow the guide you will make one.)

Nandroid is an Image of The Parts of the Phone (Boot) (Data) (System) (ETC...) An image is a "Clone" of those Area's A exact Duplicate.

Backups Such as Titanium Backup and MyBackup - Make Copies of Data parts of a ROM such as App's and App Data.
(**Please Note: Titanium Backup is much more than a backup program)

Howdy Argedion,
I bought TB a couple days ago to save progess on game apps when I flash roms.
You say TB is more than that. What else do you use TB for, if I may ask?
