Root Custom Boot - Blue X takeover for root users

you need to be rooted for this....i downloaded the program root explorer, but the programs said that my phone needed to be rooted, and that i could not access those files

So, system/local is empty on my phone. However doing a search in root explorer it is in system/bin but no extension just "bootanimation", but a .zip file is in system/media. The question is can this be changed from root explorer without going to Boot Loop Land. Last time I used root explorer to change something like this I was visiting Boot Loop Land and I didn't like it very much, don't want to go back. So, has anyone tried this, where did you place the file? Much thanks to the help!! :)

Yes, for Root Explorer to work, you need to be rooted - hence the name Root Explorer. The other version, for non-rooted, is just called Explorer. You can place them in system/media, which is supposed to be checked first (I think), but the original boot file is located in data/local, not system/local.

I just did this with my phone, using the Blue one - works flawlessly. :)

Good stuff, I actually see (what I assume would be) the default bootanimation.zip in the system/media folder. However the folder is read only for me, can't copy into it. Are you rooted or is there some way to change the folder permissions?

Edit: Oh nevermind, I think I misread your post...root required.

Let's say I do this perfectly, to the T. Would this at all cause a brick--or is that not possible because it's just the boot video?--once again assuming I do it flawlessly.

realized my typo, actually meant data/local is empty. Now, did you place in the data/local or system/media? Thanks much

No, even if you f*ck it up you'll be fine. if it cant load the animation, it just is black until it boots (and it does boot). I know, because I have messed up :P

Ok.. the reason I ask is because this should be in All Things Root. I'm going to move it and stick it for a bit. Congrats on your originality. :)

Worked like a charm for me. Used dropbox to move it to my SD, then root explorer to put it in /data/local (dont forget to click the 'mount r/w' before copying). Thanks for the work on this.

Note: you should be able to ADB push this from your computer without root. I was able to do so on my DInc before I rooted it...

as per should probably be in theming or something instead, especially because of the post above this one saying it doesnt HAVE to be rooted if you use the devkit.

Thanks though, especially for the sticky :)

You don't need root for this. All you need to do is do: adb push /data/local
There is no reason to put it in /system/media because the phone checks in /data/local first, so you will probably get a faster boot time.

Data/local. I just created a backup of the original that was in there and copied/pasted to that folder with Root Explorer. Just ensure you change Root Explorer to R/W instead of the default R/O mode it opens in. :)

nice i did it.. used root explorer, R/W'ed it, then moved the bootanimation.zip to data/local. i got the droid eye looking around (2nd one).. looks great!

You don't need to mount the system as RW because it is in /data/local. Now if you were to put it in /system/media then you would, but that doesn't make sense since the phone looks in /data/local

Hey just wanted to say nice work. I know you think it "looks lame" but good job. I think the blue looks pretty cool.

Hey!
I'm loving these. Could you just make the standard boot except with the blue you used above? I don't really want all of the fuzzy stuff. :) Hopefully it wouldn't be too hard cause its just changing the color.
Thanks

A green eye would be kind of cool. :D You know, since that's the color of the little Android dude. :>

I like the other poster's idea about a Cylon's eye sweeping back and forth. That would fit rather nicely.

I decided to just create my own green eye animation. I used WACO's first animation and just changed the blue part to green. The custom animation is still totally his; this is just my personal edit that I think I will use after my Droid arrives. Let me know if you like it. :)

I was going to create a Robot Chicken related animation, but it's already 3AM and I really wanted to post this for now. I'll probably work on the second one, (possibly more) tomorrow and later on. Enjoy.
