when you say it sticks at the boot for a long time how long is long?
I can and do rebuild davlik through the a2sd gui i would say 5 mins is not unheard of for reboot.

Good to know. I did not really time it. I know it can take a while. Mine stays on the KoumaKenel screen. When I tried it from CWM it kept repoeating the CTMOD an while it was rebuilding. But, it did not put the cache in the right place. I have not read the new OP on this thread, so I have not done whatever Inigo changed. Need to read that, lots of good info. Just not tonight. Past my bedtime.
Optimus, I will try it again tomorrow sometime and give it at least 5 minutes before I do anything else.

according to the Law of Inverted Supplication
CTM + xtrs + usr_aps = L-assT
which roughly means the first boot after a proper wipe of the dalvik-cache in any given situation, either with the terminal commands or through the app, will probably take a long-ass time.
i mean even though ctmod is extremely slim his thread says first boot may take five minutes.
add to that any apps you put in the system folder yourself.
add to that any other apps you have downloaded since you're only doing a dalvik reset.
but seriously if you're not getting to your bootani and just staying on the splash, you may have something else going on. now i'm curious to know which it is.

Edit: Started over and installed a2sd, and everything seems to be working! (I have flashed and reflashed my phone with almost everything in this forum, numerous times. I can't reiterate how important it is to read the directions, and make sure you understand them, and review the entire post. You will often find tips and suggestions that make things easier when experimenting. I made a mistake, and I wanted to make it clear that it was my mistake, and nothing to do with the developers work. Thanks Inigo!
Having completed all of the steps on the first page, I can run A2SD analytic commands from Terminal Emulator - such as check and partlist, etc - BUT I get an error that the sd-ext partition can't be read so the main program won't run. The error message says that the sd-ext is EXT3, and therefore not supported [the same message says that it would be supported if EXT2 or 4]. I've checked it in gparted and it does indeed appear to be EXT3. Even when I've formatted it as EXT4 in gparted before starting the installation process on the phone, it gets formatted back to EXT3 when I partition the SD card in CWM as per the instructions on page 1. Its a class 10, 16GB disk. I've tried setting the sd-ext partition at 2GB and 4GB in my various attempts when partitioning in CWM.
Any idea where I might be going wrong? Any additional info that would help determine the source of the problem? Thanks in advance, and thanks for developing these tools.

i know it's a pain in the ass but can you please describe all the modifications you have done and in what order you did them?
for formatting in cwm, and maybe hroark or koumajutsu can correct me if i'm wrong here, the modules for ext3 have not been compiled for this phone so cwm cannot make an ext3 partition. it doesn't know how.
the script will mount only ext2 or ext4 partitions. if you haven't flashed koumakernel or ctmod, you probably have the stock kernel which can use only ext2. i recommend you partition and format with cwm. i know that means transferring files back and forth to keep your music but it gets the result you're looking for.
and i only get credit for porting this to the prevail. i didn't create it. the script is tkirton and the app is elgubbo. but thanks.

then I flashed cm-7.1.0-HROARK-beta2d.zip using CWM, rebooted and flashed the A and then B hotfixes
then flashed the google apps [gapps-gb-20110815.zip] from the same hroark thread.
then these steps exactly as in your instructions:
4. Select - Mounts and Storage > mount /system then mount /data. When done, press power button to return to main menu.
5. Select - Install zip from sdcard > Choose zip from sdcard > dt_a2sd_prevail.zip. When that finishes, press power button to return to main menu.
6. Select - Advanced > Partiton sd card > ext size (any) > swap size (0M). When finished, press power button to return to main menu.
7. Select - Reboot system now
so, I believe that I have done as you suggest, partition and format with CWM - although I'll note that in that process it only asks me how big to make the partition and whether or not to create swap, but NOT what format to use, so maybe I'm missing that opportunity somewhere along the way, I just haven't seen it.

the cm7 by hroark is built on the froyo firmware and should be treated as it's own beast. that may be causing some trouble. if you're using that cm7 port you can get the latest beta version from tkirton's thread HERE. the install is the same.
the modified version i made is for stock-based roms such as shabbymod and ctmod and forces a mount point. that's probably why the gui isn't perfectly integrated come to think of it.
once you have it working you should not have to partition your sd card again unless you revert to stock kernel or shabbykernel. i know it can sound confusing but if you remember which mods you use and which kernel is installed you can keep your downloaded apps across rom changes so long as you don't wipe or recover your sd-ext.
i know it seems like there should be one quick, easy solution to your problem but this is the joy of customized operating systems. some people say you have to keep track. some people say you get to choose. i think the glass is half-full.

OK. I'll try that and report back. I thought that since the stock kernel was GB, that then the hroark cm7 would still be GB, FWIW.
EDIT: So, I reinstalled using CTMod2.1 instead of hroark and it seems to be working well. Thanks for the help!

cm7 installs its own kernel, that's not a problem. the problems lie in the partitions that get flashed only with odin. the cwm roms available for this particular phone format system data and cache and install a kernel. there are five other partitions that may have changes between android versions

Heres what I tried for kicks. I have my Apps on SD and have Dalvik Cache on SD-EXT. When I open Root Explorer and go to data/dalvik-cache and select all files to delete, and then reboot. My phone hangs on CTMod splash screen. I gave it fifteen minutes before I decided to select my restore. Any thoughts to my madness lol.

So i installed some more apps to see how long this can take. Im at 33 user apps and 7 extra in system now. Stock rom with books and maps moved to data. I Reset dalvik and watched my favorite bootani for a while. At around 6mins I called for a logcat and saw the dalvik still building. Took a total of 9. That's a long boot. Thankfully that only happens the first time.

are you saying we are able to change our boot screens? if so can we use the ones that we already had for froyo? also are we able to use go launcher or any other app like that without any probs? thanks

koumakernel 1.0 GB enables them. bloodawn hooked up a bootanifix.zip for his ctmod (sweet-ass rom, by the way. if you haven't tried it yet, GO!) i really like kouma's boot splash. it's nice to see that prevail screen finally change. and transitoyspace made a cool custom ani for ctmod.
now you can change bootanimation.zip 'just like the old days'
oh, and boot sound changed to /system/etc/poweron.snd if you want to change that again. there's a thread somewhere about the format for that file. i'm thinking it's pcm raw. just rename your xxxx.wav to poweron.snd and replace the original file. audacity works for me.

Read new op. Installed new zip. Followed instructions. It worked. Apps still on SD. Dalvik on SD. Used GUI to delete dalvik. It rebuilt and finished this time. But only took about 5 min. Did not stick on kouma splash too long like before. Went to bootani for most of time. Tried terminal command for fun. Looks OK.

the image from this zip is just a rooted deodexed stock rom with a2sd and now bootanimation support. nothing fancy.
Bloodawn is a beast. CTMod removes carrier iq along with everything else that's not essential to the phone's operation and then tweaks it all to the "sweet spot" settings. it's definitely worth a try at least and it's easy to switch from that image you're on.
1 make a backup with cwm
2 install ctmod and reboot. don't wipe or format anything afterwards, just reboot
3 go back to recovery to install a2sd and again don't do factory reset or format anything, just reboot
4 make sure a2sd is switched on and 'move and rebuild' dalvik on sd
now you have ctmod and all your apps.
if you don't like it just restore your backup.

I want to give this a shot today, but can you tell me what kouma kernel this has? .1 or 1.0? If it is .1, and if I were to install kk 1.0, would I just follow steps 3-4? Thanks!

so is this true to all mods that support ext4? I don't always have to do a full wipe is what I mean? Also does that last version we were talking about, does that have the carrier iq removed?

the odin image in the first post of this thread has the latest koumakernel1.0 and cwm5 on gingerbread. sounds delicious.
ctmod installs koumakernel also but i don't really know which version. there is a BootaniFix.zip in that thread which contains the latest koumakernel and boot animations.
you can flash kk1.0 over any gingerbread rom (cm7 doesn't count. has its own kernel) to add support for ext4 partitions and boot animations.
then you are correct, just reinstall a2sd without factory reset or format and keep your apps.
i've noticed (happened twice now) that script manager needs to be un- and re-installed after this but most apps work fine.
yes, i don't reinstall my apps when i flash, just reinstalling a2sd and turning it on will recover them. the Odin image in the OP has everything the stock rom has including carrier iq. i only went as far as deodexing so a2sd would fit with all of the stock apps in place.

finally did the ctmod. one first question that i can't figure out... where is the call pad, contacts etc? all i have is the main screen that says ctmod. no soft buttons to see my apps, make a call or anything. did i do something wrong? thanks
also when i went back into recovery added a2sd, restarted, can't find it anywhere on my phone. also it don't look like I am using ext4 because i am down to 120mb now??? thanks agian

I would recommend jumping over to the ctmod thread for more information & more tips, but in the meantime, if you long press on the home screen, add shortcut, select applications grid... That will add app drawer icon to your desktop.
You can then drag it down and add it to the dock menu. You can add more apps the same way, or just long press them in the app drawer, and they will be added to your current screen as well.
if you installed a2sd, in should then appear in your app drawer.

I had A2SD before when I was on Froyo. I did a fresh install and followed the directions to a "T" like I had done the first time I used A2SD.
When I try to move apps to the SD I click The "apps are on internal storage" tab and then click "yes" when it asks "Are you sure?" It pops up "working" and loads the "changing settings" then flashes to "working" "reading settings" and after that it does not re-boot or do anything and the screen still reads "apps are on internal storage" the same thing happens if i try to move the Dalvik Cache to the SD-EXT? Very odd. I had no problems previously using this.
any ideas?
