Root Darktremor A2SD for Prevail [Updated 5-7-12]

Thanks to hroark13, murderousone, interdpth, Shabbypenguin, and everyone who has helped to get a little more than expected.

Version 2.7.5.2-1 of Darktremor A2SD
Required:
-Hroark13's ClockWorkMod Recovery
- dt_a2sd_prevail.zip
-A properly formatted SD card. This means an SD with an ext4 or ext2 partition.

Install With Hroark's CWM

The best way to do this is to use odin and hroarks ee14 with cwm recovery and hroark1.2 kernel
then go into cwm recovery and partition the sd card, at that point it will create a ext4 partition then go into mount and mount /system and /data

1. Place downloaded dt_a2sd_prevail.zip on SD card
2. Turn off phone
3. Boot into recovery (hold vol up + power)

NOW'S A GOOD TIME TO MAKE A BACKUP. OK, Let's Continue.

4. Install zip from sdcard
5. Reboot system now

First boot may take a few minutes while apps are moved.
To see if it worked check the a2sdGUI now in your app drawer
or open a terminal or adb shell with root priveleges and type
Code:
a2sd check
you should get a status dialogue.

Download DarkTremor A2SD for Prevail here

EXT4 Rom Users
If you don't get the a2sdGUI app the first time you boot, you need to boot into recovery, manually mount system and data, and install it again. If you're on the all ext4 rom, this will happen. If you don't know what an all ext4 rom is, odds are you don't have it and won't need this step.

Worked for me in the order above.

The only gotcha I ran into was the largest partition I could create was 4GB. I have an 8GB SC Card. I can deal with that later.

Thanks to all!

you're info says you're using shabbykernel rc1. if that's the case you do need to use an ext2 partition. shabbykernel does not support ext4.

Yes, I am using the Shabbster's RC1! So in fact, I have to have Hroark's to create the Ext4?
But in the Same, using a fresh card from the phone and only partition it once it still creates the EXt3.

you'd have to ask hroark why that happens since he created the cwm for this phone. now that you mention it, though, it would be great if the 'partition sd' made an ext2 and 'format sd-ext' made ext4. maybe less headaches for everyone. as it stands you will need to format the sd-ext as ext2 on a computer. i use easeus partition manager for this, others use minitool.

I don't know if you care or not but there was an update on Link2sd that allowed me to move all apps to sd. I now have 122 apps with 70 mb of internal unused space.

i haven't used link2 in a while. sounds like it got better. good to know there are more great options to help with the shortage of internal memory on this phone.

also, that's an incredible number of apps. how much external storage are you using?

Total: 0.94GB Used: 116MB Free:844MB... By the way. I haven't tried the Darktremor A2SD because it seems to complicated.
so that's 122 total apps installed not 122 user apps, right? i was wondering what that many downloaded apps could have been used to do?

if this phone had even slightly more internal storage, i'd probably have stuck with link2sd.
i haven't gone back because this really is easier. with link2sd i would find myself making sure i re-linked libs after getting more apps and waiting when i saw an update to make sure it didn't break other phones. i felt compelled to check pretty often to make sure i hadn't forgotten anything. it wasn't easy enough for me and when i installed a lot of additional apps, the internal would drop too far for me.
i figured...
i had the ext
i had cwm.
i'd done the hardest parts of installing this already.
so just run the zip installer once and no more worries. just like a theme.
now everything moves to sd and stays put and i don't have to worry about downloading an app update that breaks my functionality.
and this includes zipaligning and lowmem settings. cuanto mas mejor.

if you ever do decide to try this please check your internal storage before you begin, after un-linking and then again after flashing this. i'd be interested to observe the differences.

Then go to flash zip and flash the a2sd that is in the first post. That SHOULD take care of the problems. Just remember to back up your sd card to your computer as it will get wiped.

Holy bananza funnel cakes batman! AS2D is sweet! Thanks to everyone involved with this! I appreciate the help and guidance! The Shabbster! Hroark! Inigo! Murderous1! N.Optimus! Interdepth! DarkTremor! Ohhh and the best themer! Bloodawn! 4.0 is still super sick. Also thanks to the unknown players at part...

"Whats wrong with that guy... Running his mouth like he won a Grammy"
LOL :D;):D;)

So back to my issue...

a2sd still will not install properly. I went to check to make sure my partition was EXT2, even though I was certain that it was, and for some reason it had changed to "other". I am using easeus partition manager and keep trying EXT2, and it won't work on a2sd.

I CAN mount sd-ext in CWM

Running HK1.2, Shabby 0.9, and Simple Blue 4.0(noCIQ)

Is there a specific cluster size I need to use, or some setting in easeus that I am missing?

are you using the zip from the first post?
try navigating to /system/etc/init.d and making sure S00mount is there. the zips from the other forums don't include the mount script or a2sdGUI app.

if you used terminal emulator to run the a2sd check, you probably need to run su to get root priveleges before any other commands get proper output.
Code:
$su
#a2sd check
is your ext set as a primary partition as well?
backup your sd and partition with cwm. you're using hroarkernel so ext4 will work.

i'm using the same setup (that simple blue is amazing, bloodawn is a beast) with a few personal tweaks for days now with no errors. previously ran for weeks with royal 4.1.

Same concept but different.. Sorta.. The AS2D is working, I checked before installing, but when in the terminal emulator

$su
#a2d check
a2sd: not found

DL'ed the as2dGui and the button to shift apps to sd/internal is locked on internal... it functions, but after it "changes settings"..it reverts back to say apps are on internal memory.. Not sure what that means.. I know they are on the SD because of the drop of memory I seen.. Also under the system information tab, there isn't any data shown, just blankness. (I did hit the refresh button) lol

Yeah it is set to primary as well, so which zip should I be using? I have been trying the newest version from XDA forums. If I partition with CWM do I need a different zip for ext4?

there's the problem. the only version that works for this phone is the one i modified. grab it from the first post of this thread.

After A2SD is installed and running, do new apps I load install onto sd automatically? If not, what's the process? I don't see an option in the GUI.

Thx, RP

as soon as u open the gui, it should say apps are on sd... if it doesnt & says apps are on internal... then click the button so that it moves apps 2 sd...

it should b automatic also.. apps get saved to your sd but you wont b able 2 view em on the sd partition like u regularly do on your fat32 partition....

if u check your system/sd folder thats where your apps will automatically go & is your ext2/3/4 partition.... apps will also be in the data/app folder which is linked to the sd now....

Well, I have left this one alone for quite a while now because at least in the early posts it seemed there was still tweaking to be done.

But... Today I said, What the Hell! I saw the Optimus Seal of Approval on this a while back and that is good enough for me.

It looks like it works! I think I like it. I never seemed to get any benefit from the Link2SD but I can see improvement with DarkTremor and AppstoSD.

How do I tell what class SD Card I am using? I bought a 16GB from Radio Shack when I got my first Prevail and it seemed pretty cheap to me (I don't remember what I paid). This is one reason I have been holding off.

I followed the instructions and it works as advertized. No problems. I do notice that many things seem to run faster and I am showing 149MB Available under Internal phone storage in the SD and phone card storage on Settings.

I have only moved a few apps back from system to user memory. Many of them are still on the ROM. Should I move ALL true user apps back using TB or uninstall and reinstall them fresh or does it matter.

Played around with the GUI app a little but not sure about the swap.

I also moved the Dalvik Cache.

I used the newest CWM (which I also installed today) to create the partition and I do not think that I formatted it come to think of it. Not sure whether it is EXT2, 3, 4 or something else.

Not sure how the mounts are supposed to look in CWM. The only one that says unmount is /cache.

Thanks for all the hard work on this and all the pioneers who went through the testing and troubleshooting. Let me know what I did wrong and I will redo it, but it seems to be fine. If I find out that my SD card is a slow class, I will really be impressed (plus get a faster one).

LMAO that hilarious.

Ok far as the class of your card I think it may say it on the card, or at least the packaging. Do not use a swap, just set it to 0mb when partitioning the card in cmw. If you are running hroark kernel 1.2 it will have made a ext4 I believe.
With this you can move all the user apps back to the normal data partition. the data/app folder is actually symlinked to the sd card so the phone thinks the apps are on the phone internal memory you can use tb or move them manually it wont matter they will all end up on the ext partition. Every new app will go directly to the sd card you will not need to do any extra steps.
good to have the davlik on sd as well saves lots of space.

Thanks, Optimus. I will pull out the SD and get a microscope or go back to Radio Shack and ask. LOL. I am running hroark1.2 and I did not format the partition so I guess it is EXT4? Which sounds good to me.

When I set the partition, I selected 1GB and 0 swap. The GUI shows "set swappiness to this value (0-100) with 60 to the left but it appears to be grayed out If I press above that it says SWAP is deactivated. So, I guess that is good.

I also have ZipAlign on Boot activated. Is that good?

Which low memory setting is best? None are checked right now.

RAM now says 133MB Free in the GUI.
SD Card under the normal settings menu says 150MB
TB says 157MB under Internal.

Edit:

This thing does run much faster overall. I moved all the user apps from system and downloaded or restored some more. internal memory holding up very good and going down VERY slowly.

I notice that it downloads and installs from Market much faster even taking my slow 3g at home into account. From the Office WIFI it runs MUCH faster on everything than it did before (yesterday).
