Root Dear family, friends, ect *Its official*

Rxpert83

Dr. Feelgood
Its 3:00 AM here.....time for a status update

I truly smashed the poo out of my phone tonight. I was playing some music for the party and decided it would be a good idea to toss my phone down to a friend from the loft down onto a chair cushion below so he could play the next song...

Naturally, I hit the metal arm of the chair and smashed the hell out of my screen. The screen is completely black with streaks through it, but I can still navigate it because I'm fairly certain I was able to get to recovery and run superwipe (lulz).

Anyway.... I will be going to best buy tomorroy because thats where my insurance is. I doubt this will be my official goodbye but if they dont replace my drunken shenanigans I will be taking this opportunity to buy out the remainder of my contract and pay the early upgrade fee.

Based on my past experiences with BB, they will replace the EVO, but I may take the opportunity with the new refurb evo to cash in on my *future proof* warranty and upgrade for free. I haven't decided on what device yet.

ps... never go with best buy as an insurance company. I have hilarious chat support logs with them. Its a big waste of money. In the long run they suck

In conclusion, this may be my departure from the evo 4G. :(

ah man that sucks!!!!

sorry to hear that. i actually like my best buy insurance. never had any issues with them. dropped my phone last week and my screen had this big black splotch in the middle of the screen and they replaced it for me. i did not have to unroot the phone even.

well keep is posted what your next move will be.

just make sure that you do not :puke:

:p

I'm going where rxpert is going. Learned so much from him ... well, learned so much from everyone. Every time I see one of these goodbye posts I want to cry.

Poop, that sucks homie. :(

I hope it all works out in the end. ;)

What's it going to be, Gnex or El Tevo?

I'll hold an hour long press conference to reveal whether I stay in cleveland or go to southbeach. :p

Honestly it probably won't be a move soon. I'll at least have to wait for the refurb.

It'll take me a while to warm up to any new subforum. I'll always compare it to the group of guys/gals here. This one will always be my home.

So I just got back from Best Buy. Should have my replacement EVO in 3-4 days.

I asked about the buyback value... and they said my EVO is worth $240!

I'm looking into how much it'll cost to buyout the remainder of my contract... Its looking more and more like I may be upgrading sooner rather than later.

Holy moly $240.00!

Wow $240 is impressive. I did order an Evo lte on Best buy this morning. I've had an upgrade since 9/09. Figured I'd use it.

Maybe I'll see you there Rxpert.

So I've been on the phone with sprint corporate ( they are very helpful and professional btw bumped my call up to a supervisor without me asking right away and she found locations with the program currently running without me asking for them). Unfortunately, the Sprint program where you can buy out of your contract and get an early upgrade isnt being offered anymore. They did inform me that Corporate stores in Chicago are running the same promotion until June 20th, but I don't have any plans to drive that 3 hours in the near future.

I am asking them about Minneapolis now since I will be up there in about a week to find apartments for the upcoming school year.

If I can't find a buyback promotion near me I will be sticking with the trusty EVO for the forseeable future.

Edit: There is the program going on in Minneapolis, so now I've got some thinking to do. It'll cost me $120 to upgrade a year early to a nexus or LTE EVO

;):p

yeah, Rex, I took an early upgrade to get my EVO..and at that time was informed that the program was going away..but Ive read on XDA that a member there was able to buy an early upgrade...guess its just who you talk to and how hard you ball. Guess you will just have to make it clear that verizon is an option because "that is where everyone else is", so the free mobile to mobile wont matter, and that you are "constantly on wifi anyway"!!! haha

I went into Best Buy today to see if my phone had arrived, and walked out with a brand spanking new (to me) Samsung Seek. If you haven't heard of it, its for the better. The guy chuckled when he told me I had to pay a $50 deposit for this loaner phone until my EVO got back. As if I'm going to steal it

Being very disappointed in what I walked out with, I drove to my local Sprint Store to check out the HTC EVO 4G LTE and Galaxy Nexus for a little one on one time in person. I was impressed with both of them. They were both VERY responsive to the touch. I think I would be truly happy with either one of them.

What I got away from it:

Evo LTE 4G
Pros:
camera
faster processor
beats
HTC Sense (I think I would miss it. At least the option of having it :o)
Great dev support from our evo 4g devs (ok, you cant tell that by holding onto the device)
HTC build quality

Cons:
I don't like the way it looks, especially the back. It looks like it was thrown together with all of the different kinds of plastic (blame android police for pointing this out in their review of it, I couldn't get it out of my head when I saw it in person).
No S-off (ouch!)
No removable battery
Location of USB port (meh)

Galaxy Nexus:
Pure google experience
AOSP the way its meant to be
Easy root (this holds a lot of weight)
Fast updates straight from google (at least its supposed to be)

Cons:
no fancy camera, beats (will probably come with root), or processor the Evo had
No SD card? (honestly not sure)Lots of internal storage though
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The nice lady behind the counter tried walking me through both devices, but it must have become apparent to her pretty quickly that I knew these devices pretty well so she just let me play ;). I told her I wasnt elegible for an upgrade yet and asked about hte early buyout program and she said it had just ended and gave me the number for sprints customer retention.

I just called the Sprint customer retention line and explained my situation. ( I actually hung up the first time because they answered after 1 ring and I hadn't figured out what the hell I was going to say yet ) They had no issues with allowing me to use the Early Upgrade Buyout Program and I paid my $105 to upgrade a year early.

Now I've got a decision to make. The upgrade will be available within 24-48 hours. At this point I'm leaning toward the Gnex, but I honestly swing back and forth on a daily basis.

Such a big commitment :D

EDIT:

And samsung just announced the Galaxy S III will be going to Sprint. Now this just got even harder

EDIT 2:

And now I'm liking the EVO LTE after watching a few comparison movies... UGH the flip flopping continues

I just saw the announcement about the SGS3 and I think I'm sold on that device...possibly. I like the fact that the Galaxy Nexus is pure Google so it'll be updated the quickest, but as you folks already know AOSP is not really for me :/. Anyway, I've had LG, Samsung, and now HTC and I must say HTC's product quality is pretty good compared to others (my friend's Epic just has terrible hardware defects). I'm positive the Evo 4G LTE will have s-off. Rxpert I'm with you about the flip flopping. But mine might just be between the EVO 4G LTE and the SGS3. Decisions.

If they would hurry up and get a true s-off for the device I wouldn't have to put nearly as much thought into this. I would go LTEvo and not look back (well, maybe occasionally ;)).

& this gets rid of the ugly back plastic.

I wonder how long it is before someone starts making an aftermarket piece for that.

That's really good modding. I'd just get an OtterBox or Ballistic case. They save the phone and look great lol

Yeah I will end up throwing an otterbox on whatever device I get. And probably a zagg screen protector as well

My daughter has cracked her screen pretty good. I told her back when we got the thing to get an otterbox for it. Of course we all know how well children listen. I have one on myne and I have to say as much as I have dropped my phone I never have had an issue with it. The 50$ spent on getting it is very cheap considering she will have to pay 100$ for a replacement and not only that she has been paying for the insurance at 8 $ a month. I helped her look online for a new screen however I know my kid she will more than likely never spend the 10$ it takes to replace it. However not my problem anymore. It was the last phone dad helps her get.

The OtterBox has saved me numerous times in my drunken moments. $50 one time (with replacements) is better than $100 a few times if I keep breaking my phone

Yes it saved my EVO many times as well. Unfortunately, it couldn't do a thing for the direct armrest corner to screen impact. Funny this is though, the zagg shield prevented the actual screen from shattering. Best Buy geek squad didnt believe the screen was broken when I brought it over to them after removing the battery because the actual screen itself was still flawless.

So rxpert, what's it gonna be?!?

I just checked online this morning and it shows I'm eligible for the upgrade. So good to know it took.
I think I'm going to go with the EVO LTE. It occurred to me that the family I have with rooted phones are already ready for an upgrade, and honestly I don't know if some of my older family members could go without the sense overlay.

They try to all go with the same device as me so I can root it for them, and keep them updated ect

boo. hiss. Actually, I guess I can't say I'm 100% committed to the Nexus. I guess I'll just see what happens in August when I'm eligibile. One thing's for sure, the Nexus, LTEvo and GSIII are all great phones.
