Help 'Delete by selection' screen appearing when pressing backspace whilst writing a text

I'm made up I found this thread as it saves me having to make one! So glad it wasn't just me that had this problem, and that it wasn't just me that was getting hacked off with it.
I have to say though, the Desire S is my first smartphone and I honestly have no complaints about it or HTC in general (maybe that will kick in over time, who knows), apart from this one problem. If a fix comes for this, it'll be the perfect phone!

Just received this from HTC after sending a video of the bug.

"The Escalations department have received the video and have confirmed that this issue is currently in analysis and investigation. We will issue a notification on our website once we have reached a conclusion. Please check our support link on: HTC - Support"

Hey all,
I am using a Desire S and have had this issue since I bought it.
I have previously done a factory reset and it did not help.
I have just had a lengthy conversation with HTC on chat.
The agent I was talking to said that he was trying it on a Desire S while I was talking to him and he could not replicate the issue.
Needless to say he told me to reset again but I refused.
Anyway, I plied him with a pretty in depth guide on how to make the issue occur every time and he said that he has forwarded the report to the tech team (not sure that I believe him tho...).
It's not the end of the world but it

Any Android guro out there?

can we disable the shortcut in the keyboard that does this "Delete by Selection", or at least disable the command ... while we are still waiting for a permanent fix ...

How annoying is this bug? I played around with it and I'm fairly new to the Desire S, but I can't work out how to bring up the delete by selection option normally?

If you do go ahead and delete a 'message by selection' it will let you continue to text after, so long as you don't mind having random gaps missing in a conversation you can do that.

I'm not surprised, I don't understand how HTC think that it's acceptable for them to release this phone with such easy to replicate glitches. I'd hate to be their testing team (If one exists). :(

Any chance you could upload the video on Youtube? :)

This is absolutely doing my head in as well. It happens at least half the time I try to use the backspace key. If there is a work around, it would involve disabling the 'delete by selection' feature entirely, but not sure if that's possible?

i've got the same problem and am currently in the process of resolving the issue with HTC, have already sent them a video and their research team are supposably looking into it, they have stressed to me that they are taking it very seriously so hopefully we'll get some results soon

i find as long as im messaging someone ive messaged before so there is message history, and i start typing in portrait mode and then switch to landscape and then type some more, i get the problem almost without fail!

Hi Guys

New to Android phones, had mine for 4 weeks now and don't seem to have this problem. Do I seem to be the only one that doesn't have this problem.

Found this thread trying to google a solution to this issue.

HTC Incredible S, happens on almost every text.

Everytime it happens I wonder why I decided an Android was a better choice over an iPhone.

Fixed.

I switched from iPhone to a HTC Desire S and thought the same as you because the error was driving me mad. I got the phone replaced with a Samsung GS2 and it's the best phone I've ever had.

Hey guys i found a SORT of fix. When you are texting like this for example...

*hey i will GWY<----- when you make a mistake like that instead of tapping the backspace button to get rid of your mistakes. Press AND HOLD it until it gets rid of your mistakes its a SLIGHT fix but its ALOT easier to have to deal with the whole delete by selection issue.

Hopefully you guys will find this useful!!

After testing various things I've discovered it happens when the keyboard is active and the phone is tilted from portrait to landscape.

To stop this from occuring either:

A: Turn the phone on its side before entering edit mode (ie before keyboard appears)

B: If editing in portrait and decide you want to turn to Landscape mid edit... turn the keyboard off (Bottom left symbol(keyboard with a down arrow)) now turn the handset, tap the message to bring up the KB again and voila.

It aint perfect, but it becomes second nature with practice.

Hope this helps until a fix arrives.

Zenith.
Well, I only text in landscape mode and I still encounter this bug, frequently. I've never had this happen until their last update, did any of you?

I have an HTC Inspire, and besides this bug and a few other fairly small bugs, I love the Android phones. They just need to get this fixed.

i have another issue beside that... when i type a message in portrait mode and than if i flip to landscape and than back to portrait mode.. i get a like white space between the last message that i received and the box that i write the message... any1 else got this problem ?

Is really amazing how can a crap app like "Go SMS pro" can be so much better than the one provided by a billion company like HTC...

Glad I found this thread. This seems to be the only issue I have with the phone. I am currently chatting to HTC online and asking about this issue. So far I have established that there is a 2.3.4 update. I am on 3, apparently 3 have not rolled the 2.3.4 update out to their customers.

HTC chat transcript:

Jon: I understand the issue that you are experiencing. I have not got any information on when a fix will be released for this. Have you updated to 2.3.4

James S: I got the phone on Contract with 3, around 2-3 months ago. I have not installed any updates that I am aware of. When was this update released?

Jon: I don't believe it has been released on 3 branded devices yet but should be release shortly. I am afraid I don't have a specific date as 3 have to approve the update before it is rolled out.

Jon: Is there anything else I can help you with today?

James S: Does the 2.3.4 update fix this problem? Or is the update for other issues?

James S: Is there a way to disable the 'Delete By Selection' screen?

Jon: No you can't disable that screen. We don't have any specifics on the update, just that it contains bug fixes.

James S: Thank you for assistance. I will contact 3 and inquire when the update is available to 3 users. Can HTC please acknowledge that this is problem and confirm via e-mail to myself that it is an issue that needs to be fixed as soon as possible? Other users of HTC Desire S and HTC Desire HD have contacted HTC regarding this specific issue up to 5 months ago in early May 2011. It is unacceptable to ignore software issues like this for so long.

Jon: I am sorry but this is not something that I can do. I can pass this to the developers to investigate.

James S: I would appreciate that greatly. Details on how the issue occurs can be found here. Can this be forwarded to the developers as well. Thank you.

(inserted link to this dicussion here)

Jon: Ok, I will make sure this is passed on to the developers to investigate.

Jon: Thank you for contacting us. I hope you have a great day.

Thank you for contacting us. To allow HTC to continue to improve our service can I ask that you complete a very short satisfaction survey by clicking here.

I hope this is some sort of progress. The more people that contact them about the issue the better. Fingers crossed they will acknowledge the problem and fix it.

Nice work james.. i spoke with the Romanian live chat corespondent.. but she told me the same crap.. to do factory reset :|

has anybody tried a factory reset and been successful at getting rid of it? because i would absolutely do that if it fixes it, this is driving me crazy.

(i have an Evo Shift, btw, but same problem - same HTC bs)

I found a post on code.google.com and this issue can be replicated EVERY time by:

opening messages, clicking into a message with the phone in portrait, going to type with it in portrait so the keyboard loads, rotate to landscape and click the backspace. Hey presto. The first time you do this the "delete by selection" comes up and messes up your message!

Done some research and from my personal experience all phones with HTC sense that i could get my hands on have the same issue.
