Desire HD Battery Thread

your main probs are Advanced Task Killer Free and if you have no mobile signal at work turn airplane mode on ... it will be constantly searching for signal and chomping through your battery.

ATK is not needed on 2.2 as the OS manages the open apps better and as soon as you press the home screen it stops that app using battery

Quite a few text messages, a few phone calls (lasts 5 min in total). Used Mobile Internet (Edge) for around 4 hrs in total. Display brightness around 25% (seriously, no need to use higher).

So the battery has been relatively nice to me. Have not done any calibration and always charge by USB.
 
I must say, ive tried several of the things in this thread (2G only, wifi off when at work, debug option ticked, manual sync on facebook etc) and im actually really surprised how much difference its made, i unplugged my phone at roughly 7am and its now 2pm and ive still got 68% battery left - and ive been playing angry birds on and off all morning.

This time yesterday with barely any usage i was down to 20% and had to plug in to charge at 3.30pm.

Misc: USB Debugging enabled, 'green power free' app installed, turns wifi/data off when screen is off - saves hours, if not days, of battery life. Goes down roughly 1%/hour on idle.

I'm actually really impressed with my new DHD. I just sold my iPhone 3GS and got an upgrade to the DHD and was a little worried about the battery but find it to be better for me when i compare the settings i used to have on the 3GS to the ones i have now on the DHD. I can see both sides of the argument, the phone is meant to be used to its best potential and understand peoples frustration at the battery hindering this however i also understand that its quite easy to control the settings of the phone to ensure i have things on when i want them on and off when not needed - either way im maximizing my experience just taking a second or so to tweak a few settings in the widgets to get the phone to do what i want it to do. On the other hand, i am quite a simple user of the phone (still have facebook, sky news, eBay app, check mails manually as im in no rush to have them pushed all the time...etc) and can see the downside of wanting a multitude of apps running and being a little held back by the battery capacity to handle this but i am continuously reading posts from individuals who are too quick to rant and rave about its downsides - if you really want the phone, have it and love it then you will do what is necessary to ensure you get the best experience out of it even if it means a few tweaks of a widget to save battery life......

However i do have one question regarding the increased battery capacity packs you can buy on eBay (1500mah/1600mah). If they are really what they say they are will they:

- actually improve performance ?
- not damage the phone in any way?
- be a good thing to keep as spare incase you do run out of battery when your out and about and therefore can pop it in to restore the phone?

And one more thing, if these batteries are out there and they say they are genuine why don't HTC just make them for customers to buy?

About 20 text messages sent. Played a few games for about an hour and half. Listened to music for 20mins and watched videos for 40mins.

Is this the normal life span for the DHD? Cos its seems rather short to me... Have had it for a week plus now. BTW, I'm using the System Panel thing.

if you've just bought the phone, it takes a good 3 weeks to get the battery up to capacity.:rolleyes: Try Green Power too.
 
Stats from yesterday:
charged from mains while off,for around 8 hours(had 32% when switched off)
Up at 8.35 a.m (wifi on for 7 hours yet,on and off at will,3g off,auto-rotate off,brightness 25%,fast boot off,debugging on)
Checked 2 mail accounts(and read 13 e-mails total).
Checked twitter and read 4 articles(about 600 words each).
Checked face book and replied to several stuff.
Used gps for about 15 minutes(navigon).
Talked for 20 minutes and sent 20 texts,received 28(using the amazing handcent).
While I was working,cousin played 40 minutes of angry birds and 11 minutes of castle warriors straight through.
Checked mails and replied to 4 of them.
Surfed the net for 30 minutes approximately,using dolphin hd.
Chatted on facebook for 20 minutes and then talked on the phone for 2.5 hours without earphones.
Installed whatsapp application but did not set it up.
Went to bed at around 3.15 a.m with 24% still there.
I have 5 widgets on the screen,whether,wifi,lock,silent mode,battery life.
Also,I observed that start up eats away 1%(not fast boot).
All in all,I got around 21 hours with heavy use and still had about 3-4 hours to go with the rate it was dropping at the time-possibly a lot more with light use.
I guess that with 3g on,my battery would have drained at the time I got to bed.
 
what the point of paying 500+ USD , and buying a smart phone , which is more or less a useless. turn off this turn off that ... and dont use internet , dont play games ... and you might get 1 day of battery ..

seriously .. if i wanted to turn off all those things why i need to buy this big socalled smart phone ? its basically nokia 1100 after you turn off all those feature and just keep inside your pocket ...

seriously HTC's engineer must be idiot ... high end phone like this with somany design flaws ...

Got my DHD a few days ago. I am thinking of getting a replacement battery to keep with me whereever i go. The problem is, there are so many batteries out there, i dont kno which one is the best, do i buy the official HTC genuine battery, or any cheap replacement battery which says it has more mah would do? Is it dangerous to put a non HTC genuine battery into the desire HD or is it OK?

as any 1 contacted htc to ask if they are going to do a bigger battery and ask them explain the ansa to this

what the point of paying 500+ USD , and buying a smart phone , which is more or less a useless. turn off this turn off that ... and dont use internet , dont play games ... and you might get 1 day of battery ..

seriously .. if i wanted to turn off all those things why i need to buy this big socalled smart phone ? its basically nokia 1100 after you turn off all those feature and just keep inside your pocket ...

Im Surprised it's only a 1200mAh battery. My old TouchPro2 was 1500mAh. It looks with the design of the phone too you couldnt fit in a bigger battery. Is this correct? I have seen bigger battery's advertised on Amazon and Ebay but not sure theyd actually fit in the slot.

I get up to 3 days usage, you just need to remember that as it is a HIGH tech bit of kit that if you are using it every 5 mins to check the status of your facebook updates etc your battery wont last a couple of hours.

Dont be afraid to carry your charger around of get one of the many good portable chargers that will charge via usb to make life easier
 
I'm finding it hard to understand the problems faced by some people in this thread. I got my DHD on Thursday and the battery is generally more than enough for me even through almost constant usage. I usually take it off charge at 7 at night (I charge it when I get home at 3) and then spend about an hour at night on it watching iplayer. Lots of texting/emailing throughout the night, wake up in the morning with about 90% left and it lasts me all day with emails/texts/news and weather syncing/angry birds/facebook/twitter/internet browsing on 3g and wifi throughout the day until I get home. I usually have ~45% battery left once home but I plug it in and charge it then through USB anyway so I can manage my files through my PC.

USB Debugging: On
3g: On when no wifi is available (most of the day)
wifi: When available
News: syncs every hour
Weather: every 2 hours
Mail: every hour (two accounts)
Facebook: Every hour automatically, but i generally check it a few times every hour anyway.

Overally I'm VERY impressed with the DHD and it's easily the best phone I've ever had.
 
My Desire HD arrived yesterday. I had been reading this thread so had battery life in mind from the off so it seemed appropraite to make my first post in this thread :D

First thing I did was follow the advise here:

Battery charged overnight until 4am. Then did second charge and final charge completed at work.

Current stats are:

Battery @ 50% usage currently

Uptime Length: 20 hours since unplugged
USB debug: on
Accelerometer: On
3G Or 2G: 3G
Wireless On: On - When Required
Mobile Internet - When Required
GPS On: Off
Automatic Brightness: Off and set to ~ 10%
Network: T-Mobile with Orange roaming
Live wallpaper: enabled
Using the GreenPower app to manage connections and turn on/off as needed

Sync Settings;
Facebook For HTC Sense: Every 8 Hours
HTC Sense: On Push
News: Every 4 hours
Weather: once per day

App Battery usage:
Display 66%
Idle: 9%
Cell standby: 9%

Since being off charge I have played AB for 20 mins, downloaded stuff @ market place. Watched 30 mins of vids, sent/recieved 20 texts, showed off phone and features at work, trialed Sat nav on 15 minute Journey home.

It has taken me a fair few years to make the move to android definately a good choice on a good phone.
 
Sorry if a little off topic but I saw this today on eBay and was wondering if anyone has actually tried a bigger battery with the HD? I am about to purchase my HD but the battery life is the one thing I have a real issue with after reading all the posts here. I use push email with Exchange for work so I need at least 1 full days use of the phone. I have no issue with charging it everynight, as long as I get a full days email use of it.

Yeah, Android System is chomping my battery too!

6hrs since unplugged and down to 40 - battery consumption:
Android Sytem 60%
HTC Sense 19%
Display 12%
Cell Standby 4%
Phone Idle 3%
Wifi 2%

Previously battery would last 24 hrs plus with Display usually consuming 70-80%.

Can't understand what's changed suddenly. Please help!

Unless you use HTC Sense a lot I would recommend either not auto syncing, or even just delete/remove the account. Since HTCSense.com is not yet fully operational your phone will keep trying to connect, and thus the high Android and HTC usage. Once I got rid of it on my phone I go about 2 days now.

Hi all,

Should have my DHD tomorrow. Have spent the last few days on here reading up on battery life etc. Some real good posts and tips - many thanks :)

Has anyone bought/used the battery in the ebay link above? Seems too cheap to me and I would be worried about it damaging my new toy.

No doubt I will be posting over the next few days until I get my head around the DHD. Please bear with me for the dumb questions I am bound to ask and yes I will use the search function before I ask.

Great forum guys, thanks to the admins and regular posters - keep up the great work.

Will I fall in love with my new DHD? Only time will tell, but I hope so.

Another Android noob here too. Have been in the possesion of my HD for a week now and can't put the damn thing down ! My high level use takes it toll on the battery, however following the general tips on here, it will now last a day.
I'm with Orange with the 2.2 installed and need a bit more knowledge in how to update to 2.2.1 if anyone can help ?
I'm slowly getting used to texting as it was something I never thought I would with this key pad, it seems a bit too sensitive for me.
