Desire HD vs Galaxy S

The OMAP and the Hummingbird are both faster than the Snapdragon at the same clock speed (1 GHz) from what I read.

So if this is true that the new snapdragon isn't faster than the old one, the Galaxy S will still be faster than the Desire HD. Of course Android 2.2 gives a performance advantage however. So the Desire HD would win against the current Galaxy S, because the update to 2.2 isn't out yet.

LINPACK measures in MFLOPS, that's million floating point operations per second. In smartphones, integer performance is more important for general tasks that CPUs have to perform. I'm not saying 1st gen Snapdragons are faster - I also saw some indications that at per clock level, it may even be a bit slower.

I wish if there was a benchmark app that measures MIPS, not MFLOPS.

I can't make up my mind either. Have to get one or the other. Here is my perspective on things, as I first posted in the Desire HD vs iPhone 4 thread:

SGS wins over DHD on:
- Super AMOLED screen (no need to say more)
- Gorilla Glas protects the screen
- Batterylife (SGS is almost on par with iPhone 4, and the DHD have a smaller battery, and the talktime and standby time according to htc.com is a lot less than that of the SGS).
- Camera performance (according to GSMarena it beats iPhone 4)
- It comes preloaded with swype. I would just looooooove to swype :-)
- 119 gram vs 164 gram of the DHD
- SGS is big but slim. DHD might be just a tad too big.

DHD wins over Galaxy S:
- Better build quality (no plastic)
- Generally more pretty
- HTC Sense owns Touchwiz 3.0
- Locations (preloaded maps etc.)
- HTCsense.com
- It might be bigger in the pocket, but the screen is bigger to look at :-)
- Dual LED flash for those rare but critical "a bad picture is better than no picture"-situations

There are a lot of differences between these two phones, but the above mentioned ones is the ones I say make a difference for me.

I do not take into consideration the bugs with the SGS lag and its GPS problems, because I expect those to be fixed, and also its getting the Froyo before I need to purchase (Am getting the phone 1st of January, but have to decide/order now, its a company phone).

I tend to lean towards the DHD, but batterylife is a big showstopper for me, if it can't last a full day, without me worrying wether it will die on me or not.

EDIT: Added the dual LED flash as an DHD advantage, atharh convinced me :-)
EDIT2: Removed DLNA as SGS also has it (I wasn't aware until now)

Flash doesn't neccesarily give you better pictures. It'll just drain your batterylife faster.

Granted, but having no LED flash means that you are completely ruling out the option of taking photos in a dark environment.

I think you have put together a good list, and think it's definitely a feature that warrants being included in it.

It then really depends on what situations a person expects to take photos and if this is a feature they value.

Thanks

Athar

You are right. If you really need to take a picture in a dark environment i suppose a dual LED flash helps a little bit. But I'm sure it won't be a great picture anyway.

Perhaps I've just totally ruled out taking pictures with my phone on other locations than "outside in the middle of the day", because my phone camera really sucks - its a HTC Hero.

But still, even on my Canon EOS 550D DSLR, I tend to switch off the build in flash, because it is weak an destroys the pictures rather than making them better.

But I guess the dual LED flash is an advantage over the SGS's missing flash in those rare occasions where you then can get a bad picture instead of no picture at all.

For a couple of weeks I've also been wondering which phone to go with myself, whether to go for the Galaxy S (available now) or wait for the DHD.

I finally decided to preorder the DHD and was sold on the following points:

Sense is better than Touchwiz - Even though I am a tech head I'm probably not going to root the phone for a while and would prefer to see what I can do with the phone as is before hacking it (if ever). If I get the Galaxy it sounds like i would want to root almost straight away and get LauncherPro Plus and other software and add ons for it to suit my needs.

4.3 inch screen - Being on the road a lot, I do a * lot * of reading and surfing on my phone and I like the idea of a bigger screen. It seems to be a sensible size for my purposes.

HTCSense.com features - Yes, I've misplaced my phones a few times over the years and having this feature integrated will be very useful in the event something does happen. I hate having to manually backup my address book etc and would prefer it to happen automagically.

Locations - Again, very very useful for a lot of the driving and travelling I do as a result of my work. Have been looking at purchasing a specialised GPS but the DHD will be even better as I move around to different cities without my car and have instant navigation available to me.

Basically, the technical details and comparisons and benchmarks are all very wonderful, but at the end of the day I actually want my phone to be useful and make life easier for me. On paper, at least, the HTC Desire HD looks like it will do so out of the box. The Galaxy S looks like it will require some work for me to get it to that point.

Biggest Concern : Battery life, especially being on the road a lot. But this is negated by the fact that I'm also ordering a Proporta charger to use in my travels, so no longer a concern.

HTC Desire HD ordered and am looking forward to it (especially if it integrates with the new Sony Ericsson LiveView nicely, then will look at purchasing this also). But I was pretty close to walking out of the shop with a Galaxy S which is available now...

this has frustrasted me, I've been trying to figure out which is better, which have just given me a severe headache...
anyways, I just wanted to know, any word on the audio recording on DHD ? both during the video recording and just the plain audio recording.
and I wanted to know the same about the SGS.

The only reason why I opted for the Desire HD over the Galaxy S was really down to HTC sense. Touch Wiz is nice, but I thought it would have been better with just stock android over it.

This is Android though, whoever says you need to stay with TouchWiz as your UI?

Generally If I bought a handset brand new, I don't really want to mess everything up and then cause potential hardware issues or lack of detection.

Touch Wiz is a nice UI don't me wrong, But when you have been using HTC's overlay from the torrid Windows Mobile and then on Hero, you get used to seeing what you see.

Nah, just LauncherPro, lets you keep the good bits about TouchWiz (like the switches in the notification tray), but do away with the clunky bits of its UI (apps drawer/homescreens). I don't really miss much about Sense (I also have a Desire), but the new iteration of Sense of course may be a different story.

I think the new HTC Sense iteration as NZtechfreak calls it, is what makes the difference for me.

I've installed launcher Pro on my HTC Hero, and would probably install on the Desire HD as well, depending on how many new and fancy widgets HTC have developed, and I therefore a unable to use if i switch to launcher pro.

As far as I've read, the Galaxy gets the update to 2.2 in a few weeks, and I've read a short review on the Galaxy S with 2.2 at Test af mobiltelefoner og nyheder | Mobilsiden.dk and it looks promising. Both speed wise, but also GPS wise, as the GPS problem supposidly have been fixed.

So I'm still undecided :D But I'm still leaning towards the Desire HD.

I'm still waiting to see whether to get rid of my Galaxy S and replace it with a Desire HD.

I'm sick of Samsung's lack of support and the repeated delays to updates. I guess with the slight delay to the Desire Samsung have one last chance to fix all of the issues.

Anyway, don't buy the Galaxy S. I won't be buying from Samsung again.

But take into consideration its not so brighter on the HTC side when it comes to update..I'm sure Orange UK customers and UK network customers in general will tell you..Especially with the HTC Hero!
