Doctor Who

I miss much of the dialogue, perhaps as a by-product of the accent plus the speed of the dialogue. They seem to be speaking very quickly

It could be both. Neither have particularly 'thick' accents but I can still understand non-UK viewers having trouble. Capaldi also loves playing with the rhythm of dialogue which, while entertaining and dramatic, can get lost in the mix.

In any event, I have not warmed to the new doctor as I had hoped.

I'm still not sure if we're meant to. I like the character, but I'm not fond of the person, if that makes sense. He's colder, more cynical.... more alien.

I know what you mean. I was never really attached to Matt Smith as The Doctor. It never felt grounded, and he was too whimsical. I really like Capaldi's take on the character. But, his Doctor is certainly less compassionate and hopeful than before.

I think you're on to something, Slug--my take is that we're not supposed to like him yet--i.e., his character will change & grow over time (in good and bad ways, I'm sure).

Hopefully, we've got years ahead of us for Peter Capaldi to grow on us if he hasn't already (and he has for me).

I'm a Dr newbie, so I apologize in advance.

First, I'm very attached to Clara. She was companion when I started watching. I hope the rumors are just that, rumors.

Secondly, even though I considered myself a fan after my first episode (giant world/memory eating entity) I still didn't watch every new episode. But.... I watched the finale, and the 2 (or 3) specials afterward. I decided to be dedicated this season and I haven't missed an episode.

I'm officially hooked. Loved the dynamic of getting used to a new Dr, for the characters and me. I love the dialog, the humor, writing etc...

I'm really liking new Dr. And the clara/boyfriend parts. The episode where he was the janitor was TV gold imo.

Perhaps you'd enjoy it more with subtitles? They do offer it with subtitles in the UK, so presumably you can get them with the American broadcasts.

This was actually a good idea Xyro. I hadn't thought of the subtitles and turned them on today and rewatched the "Kill the Moon" episode. It was a bit cumbersome, but helpful to follow the dialogue.

I like Clara, but oftentimes the speed of the conversation between her and the doctor has made it difficult for me to follow. The subtitles definitely help.

I'm not sure what it is yet, but I had no problem hearing and understanding the previous 3 doctors (since I began watching).

Many of my English students say they have difficulty in understanding and following TV dramas from the UK, such as Doctor Who, because they're usually talking fast and the various dialects.

I'm quite familiar with the various dialects of English. My grandmother was educated at Oxford, plus I grew up between Michigan and Texas. With all of these linguistic influences, my accent is impossible to identify (aside from "generic American") and I usually have no trouble understanding ANYONE.

Usually.

The episode where he was the janitor was TV gold imo.

Yes I loved the bit where Clara was telling off a couple of the school kids for knocking over the giant chess pieces and the Doctor whistled "we don't need no education" from Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall.

It's an easy moment to miss but when I spotted it I had to rewind and watch it again. Brilliant.

The only Doctor I've warmed up to faster was John Hurt. By the second episode I love him.

I'm going as John Hurt for Comic Con. This Halloween the girlfriend is going as the 11th Doctor

I'll wait to comment, but there was one line that was absolutely one of the most fantastic I have ever heard.

Here's the line I was referring to. (In hide tags because it might be a slight spoiler)
"Do you think I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference?"
Understated in the episode and glossed over pretty quickly, but it struck me as quite profound.
:dalek:

I'm not even gonna look at your post yet... I came here for one reason, to say something about that line. Totally epic
And the Steve Jobs line, lol

It was sort of odd but I liked it. What did you think?

When Clara was so much older, I thought "Aww man, I guess all the rumors are true & she really IS leaving the show!" But then that changed, and I was very happy :)

I thought the same, then I saw Santa and I was so happy to see Santa, but then they showed the Tangerine and I was like, this is the same ending as inception, which is what I thought of after they got out of 2 dreams.

Dreams within dreams within a dream is basically inception all over again, but the cause was extraterrestrial parasites instead of a device that puts you to sleep. It was a pretty good knockoff of inception I liked it :p

I've got some catching up to do myself, if I can get inspired to do so. I hate to say it, but DW has kinda lost my attention.
